Final girls och filmiska effekter : en intermedial analys av The Final Girl Support Group av Grady Hendrix

The Final Girl is a well-known character from the slasher movies, however, during recent times the Final Girl has come to make appearances in other medias as well. The purpose of this essay can therefore be divided into two aspects; firstly, I aim to examine the representation of the Final Girl in Grady Hendrix’ novel The Final Girl Support Group (2021); secondly, I aim to analyse the filmic modes appearing in the novel as the Final Girl transfers from one media to another. The analysis will show that there is a tradition surrounding the Final Girl that is not so easily broken, and that the origin story of Lynnette’s transformation is indeed according to that tradition. However, the novel will also present the reader with a modernized portrait of the Final Girl through its characterization of Lynnette and Stephanie as each other’s opposites. The analysis will also show how the novel’s many references to the slasher film and its conventions creates filmic qualities in the text which can be found according to the theory regarding filmic modes in literature which is presented by Christine Schwanecke. The analysis shows that the novel has a strong connection to the filmic medium, while simultaneously presenting the Final Girl as a character ready to evolve beyond the boundaries of the filmic medium.Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2022-06-01</p
