On the Solution of Time-Fractional Diffusion Models
In many situations, the analysis of viscoelastic materials, like polymers, takes benefit from the introduction of fractional operators in the mathematical formalization. In addition, fractional differential models have been applied in a wide variety of fields, from biology to thermodynamics, from diffusion of information to dehydration/rehydration of food. Thus, a great interest is paid both in the analytical and in the numerical solution of fractional differential problems. The present paper considers a class of time-fractional diffusion problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Using Duhamel’s principle, the analytical solution is found. As usual in this context, the solution is given in series form and depends on the Mittag-Leffler function. We suggest a computational procedure to evaluate the solution with high accuracy, in a computing environment. Some test examples are presented both in the subdiffusion and in the superdiffusion case, to illustrate the behavior of the solution for different values of the fractional index. Test cases have been carried out in MATLAB
Visualization and Processing of Structural Monitoring Data Using Space-Time Cubes
This paper aims to analyze space-time cubes for visualizing and processing multi-temporal spatial monitoring data. The proposed case study is the Cathedral of Milan (Duomo di Milano), which has a set of monitoring time series spanning more than half a century. Differential vertical movements are periodically measured for the cathedral columns, constituting a continuous spatio-temporal dataset for structural health monitoring. More specifically, the space time pattern mining toolbox in ArcGIS Pro was used to (i) create a space-time cube and (ii) perform advanced analysis using the monitoring dataset, including time-series clustering and forecasting operations
Gender Dis-equality and Urban Settlement Dispersion: Which Relationship?
In the last 50 years, the phenomenon of urban land occupation in Europe has become increasingly relevant, leading to the development of low-density and highly dispersed settlements. The shapes and extensions of urban settlements have moved away from the more traditional and recognized dynamics of urban expansion, acquiring different forms and very low values of settlement density. These are models of unsustainable development because they tend to consume a limited resource, converting those soils intended for other uses or with a different natural vocation into artificial soils. In addition to the direct negative effects related to the amount of land consumed, the indirect effects are related to the total dependence on private cars for daily commuting, resulting in increased pollution, overall economic and social inefficiency, dependence on fossil fuels and minerals and services deficiency. The shape of the urban settlement inevitably influences the quality of life of men and women, and if we consider that, in Italy, there are still important differences in terms of gender equality, we propose the first developments of a research project in which we want to investigate whether and how the dispersion of urban settlement affects and influences the quality of life of women
Monitoring the Cathedral of Milan: An Archive with More Than 50 Years of Measurements
The paper describes the origin and evolution of the monitoring system of the Duomo di Milano, which was installed during the 1960s. In that period, differential movements induced by the extraction of groundwater (among other factors) caused significant instability and risk of collapse of the monument. Today, the monitoring system is still operative. Instruments, techniques, and calculation procedures were continuously updated considering the continuity of the time series, resulting in a precious archive for structural health monitoring and conservation. The actual configuration of the monitoring system includes a large variety of both automatic and manual sensors, digital and mechanical, in real-time or with an established periodicity. Moreover, the monitoring system inside the cathedral still preserves continuity with the original measurements thanks to continuous maintenance carried out over time. The manuscript illustrates and discusses the original system as well as the updates related to activities that began more than half a century ago
On competition in a Stackelberg location-design model with deterministic supplier choice
We study a market situation where two firms maximize market capture by deciding on the location in the plane and investing in a competing quality against investment cost. Clients choose one of the suppliers; i.e. deterministic supplier choice. To study this situation, a game theoretic model is formulated. We show that for the modelled situation no Nash equilibrium exists. However, a so-called Stackelberg equilibrium, where one of the firms (the leader) is aware of what the other (follower) is going to do, exists. The questions under study is whether co-location is a natural phenomenon in this case and in which situation one of the firms is not entering the market. The study requires a multi-level thinking where the decisions on location follow from the known quality investment behavior and the actions of the leader take the decisions of the follower into account
