    NIHILISM IN HEMINGWAY'S WORKS

    No full text
In this thesis I have studied the definition and history of nihilism, the establishment of Hemingway's nihilism, and analyzed three of his works with respect to nihilism. Nihilism is said to be, in general, a state of mind in which nothing appears to have value of meaning, and a view which denies traditional values, moral codes, culture, and thinking of life. Nihilism can be characterized as the loss of sense and purpose, the devaluation of all values, the sense of nothingness. There seems to be two types of nihilism. One might be called "destructive nihilism". It is the denial of traditional values, nothing remains; there is a loss of self-identity. It is also a fall into the abyss of despair or death because of extreme nihilistic feelings. overcoming negative nihilistic feelings. Then, in these two types of nihilism, which does Hemingway adhere to more closely? This problem is examined through the analysis of Hemingway's three early works. Among his short stories, "Soldier's Home" (1925) is the first work dealing in earnest with the problem of nihilism. This short story has a mood full of post-war nihilism, depicting the changes of the state of mind in Hemingway after the war. But at the end of this story, the hero Krebs gets over nihilism by getting a job and being a member of society. So, this story approaches a creative nihilism. Hemingway's next novel, The Sun Also Rises (1926), contains not only Hemingway's distress, conflicts and wanderings in his youth, but the realities of the 1920s after the First World War which he witnessed. This novel resulted from the post-war nihilism. However, we can find characters who try to overcome nihilism through going fishing, a moral act to give up a lover, and true manhood. The nihility of A Farewell to Arms (1929) comes from the feeling of anti-war and the disillusionment by the heroine's death. This work presents Hemingway's nihilistic idea in that he demonstrates the death and violence of war is out of an individual man's power. But in the deep despair, the hero Frederic Henry tries to do his best, according to generally accepted standards of ethics, just as Jake Barnes lives up to his own code truly without complaint. The characters in these three works apparently lack purpose of life and the view of value for the future. Nonetheless, neither does life lead to the abyss of despair. It is the very spirit of Hemingway's philosophy. Hemingway shows his strong will to live sincerely and to get over the nihilism through these three works. Thus, we can say Hemingway's nihilism is a creative nihilism which leads to a brighter world.;본 논문에서는 허무주의의 개념과 유래, Hemingway자신에 있어서의 허무주의의 확립, 그리고 그의 세 작품을 허무주의의 관점에서 분석해 보았다. ABSTRACT = ⅳ CHAPTER Ⅰ : Introduction = 1 A. Definition of Nihilism = 1 B. Hemingway: for whom the bell rarely tolls In college curricula

    No full text
This capstone discusses the possible reasons for the virtual absence of any college class curricula devoted to or including the works of Ernest Hemmingway. Hemingway was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, a Nobel laureate in Literature, and an author whose writing talent in his early years garnered the praise and literary master recognition of other iconic literary figures of his time like Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sherwood Anderson. This capstone will examine the Hemingway legacy both in his perceived hedonistic lifestyle and misogynic labeled writings and formulate an argument that might explain why, despite recent decades of critical reviews revising the negative myths of his legends and literature, the study of Hemingway‟s art is rarely found in the majority of college curricula.M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Michael Mullane

    Hemingway and Pleasure

In his consideration of the way pleasure has become a recent topic of critical attention, as opposed to earlier generations\u27 fixations on the codes, the wound, or the repressions of the iceberg, Wyatt locates an early signal, from 1919, in a Hemingway letter to his sister: Taste everything, he advises. Recognizes how publication of The Garden of Eden triggered a wave of critical investigation into sensuality and related threads and how, in light of recent scholarship on Hemingway and food, consumer preference for provenance and authenticity have driven parallel cultural trends in gastronomy and artisanal liquid refreshments. Once again, the author finds instances of epicurean delight throughout Hemingway\u27s work, no example more insightful than a quote and comment on a line from The Battler : \u27As the skillet grew hot the grease sputtered and Bugs…turned the ham and broke the eggs into the skillet, tipping it from side to side to baste the eggs with the hot fat.\u27 Here the repeated s\u27s catch the moment\u27s hot sizzle, and the t\u27s enforce the happy smacking of the lips, demonstrating Hemingway\u27s pleasure in food and in writing about food. Returns to the post-The Garden of Eden scholarship, which began to take Hemingway\u27s complicated sexual and sensual pleasures more seriously

Student experiences of medicines management training and education

Nurses on registration are expected to have sufficient knowledge and skills in medicine management to practice safely and competently. This article reports on research involving midwifery and nursing students, who were asked to complete a questionnaire related to their experiences of medicines-related training and education, and how it prepared them for practice. The results showed an overall satisfaction with the pre-registration delivery, but differences emerged in the perceived efficacy of different educational strategies. Clinically‑based and simulated aspects of the programme delivery were highly rated, with theoretical delivery scoring poorly in contrast. A stepped approach is suggested, with medicine course delivery needing to be strongly highlighted as a lead up to safe and competent nursing interventions when administering medication and all other related interventions. A grant from the innovation fund at the University of Huddersfield funded an evaluation of students’ experiences of medicines management education and training using a self‑administered questionnaire

Examines the absence of corrected textual editions of Hemingway\u27s works, a situation once described by scholar Michael Reynolds as curious and appalling. Illustrates how even recently published editions in the Hemingway Library series, edited by Seán Hemingway, remain problematic for scholars because they generally perpetuate faulty transcriptions from the manuscripts. Recognizing that (s)mall errors greatly influence our interpretations, Trogdon argues for corrected editions of all of Hemingway\u27s work and expects that as some of the earliest works reach public domain status in the coming years, interested scholars may be poised to produce them
