Exit poll survey data from users of Helsinki University Library
No full text<p>Survey data from exit poll user surveys at five Helsinki University Library locations collected from 2015 to 2016. Patrons coming out the library premises were asked about their user category (student at the University of Helsinki, researcher or lecturer, student at another institution, other library user) and the reason for their library visit. Also the duration of the visit was noted and wether they needed help during their stay at the library. The file contains 3084 rows of tabular data in CSV format. The language is Finnish.</p>
Helsinki University library - Main model
No full textThe goal of the main model is to get a quick overiview of the facades, openings and grids, as well as showing the massive program. The facades are created from plywood in order to abstarct the brick facade, the white concrete floors from white paper. The model can be split in two revealing the eleven floors, massive wooden base as contrast.
Located in the historically important Hirvi city block in the heart of Helsinki, the Kaisatalo, meaning Kaisa House, of the Helsinki University Library sits neatly between the old brick buildings. As the architecture office Anttinen Oiva Architects first major win in an open competition in 2008, the building serves as a central library for the previously dislocated faculties of the University of Helsinki.
The competition entry name Avaus, meaning openings, summarizes the concept of the building. Despite having a very large program on a very small site, the architects successfully integrated the large ovoid openings into the building to let in natural light. When the ovoid shapes that create the openings intersect the facade, they create the arches that characterize the building, breaking the strict grid created by small windows in the brick facade

No full textThe model shows the negative spaces created by the ovoid shapes which characterises the building, carved in linden wood. The model is also to scale in order to showcase its sorrounding and its relation as an infill project. The site and surrounding buildings are made out of grey paper, where the Library directly contacts the surface is painted black.

No full textThe buildings concrete strcture is covered in a veneer of brick, this is abstracted to paint in the detail model, emphasizing the volume and intersecting vaults. The vault is cut in two and supported by a transparent acrylic plate, making it less of a structure and more of an object.

The Results of a Research Data Pilot Project at the Helsinki University Library Background Background for this project has been the broad discussion at institutional, national and global level about the openness and sharing of research data. This debate has launched a need to highlight the data policy at the institutional level, and to try to find ways to create good practices in managing the growing amount of research data. In this project research data was understood as digital information used in scientific, engineering, and medical research as inputs to generate research conclusions (comp. Kleppner 2010). Objectives The aim of this pilot project has been to model the present practices and problems related to the management of the research data as a part of the research work. The main objective for the library has been to gather information and learn about research data and processes related to it. There was a need to understand the current state of the affairs at the University of Helsinki, to find out the main actors institutionally, nationally and internationally and define their roles in the process. One of the central issues has been to uncover if and in which way the library could contribute to the data management process. Methods We started by modeling the problem area related to research data. After that appeared the hunt of a suitable research group, which would be interested to collaborate with us. Various interested groups appeared. We chose a group, which had international collaborators and a very varied data. Interviews, meetings and seminars with the members of this group were the methods we have used to gather information. Results The results from this pilot will be presented in this poster. We will report the problems researchers experienced in relation to the research data management as well as the answers we were able to give during the pilot. At the end we will answer the question introduced in the title and base the answer to the results and experiences of the pilot.
