Rock Art in Eastern Jordan : 'Kite' Carvings ?
Recent surveys in the basalt region of eastern Jordan have located several rock carvings of a form which suggests that they might represent the "kites" (animal traps) common in the area.Une prospection effectuée dans la zone basaltique de la Jordanie orientale a permis de localiser des gravures dont la forme pourrait représenter les pièges (kites) que l'on trouve dans la région.Betts Alison, Helms Svend W. The Desert "Kites" of the Badiyat Esh-Sham and North Arabia
Archaeological investigations into the steppic regions of the Near East have only recently been systematized in controlled surveys and excavations. Prior to this information regarding pastoral nomads and 'archaeological' remains came from travellers' accounts. One corpus of such data concerned extensive stone structures in the basaltic sub-region of the Badiyat esh-Sham, 'desert kites', which have received much speculative attention. Their function and date were not established in any empirical way until very recently, and even then, the nature of evidence is problematical; it is typical of what might be called steppic archaeology. This, the long debate regarding 'kites' and the new evidence to hand are presented here and set against the development of steppic hunting technology from the Neolithic up to more recent periods. Helms Svend W., Betts Alison. Erich von Mendelssohn, Autor und früher Vermittler nordischer Literatur
This contribution is to commemorate Erich von Mendelssohn (1887-1913), a gifted author and a translator of medieval and modern Scandinavian, especially Danish literature, who lamentably passed away at a very young age. It contains a short biography of von Mendelssohn and deals with his poetic (including a so far unknown poem) and prosaic works (Phantasten, Die Heimkehr, Nacht und Tag, Juliana) on one hand and his translations from Danish (works from J. P. Jacobsen, Thit Jensen, and Svend Fleuron) and Old (several sagas) and New Icelandic (Einar H. Kvaran) on the other
Nie tylko Muminki, czyli to i owo o skandynawskiej ilustracji dla dzieci
The article is a brief review of some of the best known illustrators of children’s books in Scandinavia (mostly Sweden, Denmark and Norway). The text begins with Elsa Beskow and her Peter in Blueberry Land, known in Poland since the beginning of the 20th century. John Bauer and Theodor Kittelsen – widely recognised for their artistic visions of old legends and trolls – are discussed as well as some of the famous illustrators of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy tales (Vilhelm Pedersen, Kay Nielsen – with his Beardsley-like graphic works, Svend Otto S.) and Astrid Lindgren’s stories (Ingrid Vang Nyman, Ilon Wikland, Björn Berg). Obviously, a part of the article is devoted to the creator of the title characters of Moomintrolls, namely Tove Jansson. The author describes as also her less known designs to Carroll and Tolkien’s classics. Moreover, the attention is also focused on contemporary illustration in Sweden (Pija Lindenbaum, Eva Eriksson, AnnaClara Tidholm, Sven Nordquist among others) and in Norway (Svein Nyhus, Stian Hole)

More than 1500 lines have been measured with a resolution better than 0.020 \mbox{cm}^{-1}. Deconvolution techniques have been applied to the observed lines to give an effective resolution of 0.008 \mbox{cm}^{-1}. The ground state parameters of Jennings and and the excited state constants from the Raman study by Kattenberg and have been used with a spectrum simulation program to assign a number of lines. The usual analytical techniques and resonant interaction analysis are being applied to assign more lines in this highly perturbed band
Does the Current Account Matter?
The purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the behavior of the current account in emerging economies, and in particular its role if any in financial crises. Models of current account behavior are reviewed, and a dynamic model of current account sustainability is developed. The empirical analysis is based on a massive data set that covers over 120 countries during more than 25 years. Important controversies related to the current account including the extent to which current account deficits help predict currency crises are also analyzed. Throughout the paper I am interested in analyzing whether there is evidence supporting the idea that there are costs involved in running 'very large' deficits. Moreover, I investigate the nature of these potential costs, including whether they are particularly high in the presence of other type of imbalances.
The Stability and Growth Pact - Not the best but better than nothing. Reviewing the debate on fiscal policy in Europe's Monetary Union
This paper aims to review the economic literature on the Maastricht deficit rule and the Stability and Growth Pact. The author tries to expose the contradictions and inconclusiveness of the debate, highlighting both the criticism and the defense of the fiscal policy regime in EMU. The paper is non-technical and seeks to provide an overview for a readership outside the economics profession. The concluding judgment is that the pact can be criticized on a number of grounds, but that the lack of a politically feasible alternative makes it a second best solution that should not be undermined in the present crisis.
Images out of water : aspects of the interpretation of Ancient maritime grafitti
Pictorial graffiti representing ships from prehistory, protohistory and the early medieval period are frequently examined by nautical historians and archaeologists seeking information about ancient ship technology. Examples of the academic discussion and interpretation of these images may be found from the nineteenth century to the present day, in a wide range of studies. Many of these works reflect their writers' casual, even disdainful attitudes to ancient graffiti. This may be seen in their approach to the information which these images appear to contain, which may concentrate, for example, on the certain aspects of particular subjects without reference to details in their immediate or wider contexts, which may have a bearing on the images' form and meaning. In a similar vein, other writers have interpreted ancient ship graffiti using concepts of art, such as the assumption of realism of depiction, which may be inappropriate to some early visual imagery. This thesis argues that ancient ship graffiti need a more detailed and systematic interpretation as both art and artefact before their contribution to nautical history may be more reliably evaluated. In order to explore the many challenges which these graffiti offer, a multi-disciplinary approach is used, to consider aspects of the relationship between formal art and graffiti, the psychology of image making, symbolism, the philosophy of interpretation, archaeology, and the social meaning of physical context. Following these theoretical discussions, five case studies from a number of different regional and chronological groups have been chosen to provide some examples of many of the issues which were considered. It is hoped that this study demonstrates that an approach to the interpretation of ancient ship graffiti which avoids a narrow concentration on nautical technology may reveal more of their potential as evidence, not only for the form and use of early ships, but also for other aspects of life in the past
