No full textThe article discusses the multifarious work of the journal's featured artist, Heide Fasnacht, which, through an impressive range of techniques, consists in ‘deforming and reforming’ in order to ‘reveal fissures’ (Fasnacht) in all sorts of materials and stories. The article explicates Heide Fasnacht’s artistic operation as one of ‘folding, unfolding and refolding of an event’ – an explosive slowness’ which Stoppani had tackled in a previous contribution to lo Squaderno (no. 26). One of the artist’s latest works, New Frontier (2015) draws its name from a demolished Las Vegas casino-hotel. Fasnacht’s project tracks the aftermath of the implosion of the casino by collecting its disassembled materials and representing the scenery of ruins that followed its planned demolition

201135.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Biodiversity is declining worldwide. However, the generic driving mechanisms that underlie biodiversity remain poorly understood. Although food webs are a classic way to study interactions between organisms, studies increasingly show that habitat-forming organisms, so-called foundation species, stimulate biodiversity positive interactions that occur outside of the food web, such as mutualisms and stress mitigation.
In this thesis I show that interactions outside the food web play an important role in the formation of species communities and food webs facilitated by foundation species. Furthermore, I found that foundation species are also important as a food source, but indirectly as dead organic material, and I discovered that foundation species often vitally depend on the organisms they themselves facilitate. This knowledge advances our understanding of the complexity of these ecosystems and the emergence of biodiversity, so that now and in the future we can better protect and restore threatened ecosystems and their biodiversity.Radboud University, 12 maart 2019Promotores : Lamers, L.P.M., Heide, T. van der171 p

No full textReptielen staan in Nederland onder druk. Een belangrijk habitat wordt gevormd door heide. Slangen en hagedissen stellen echter specifieke eisen aan hun leefgebied. Voor zes van de zeven hagedissen soorten die in Nederland voorkomen, is heide een belangrijk of het belangrijkste habitat. Wat maakt een heideveld wel geschikt als habitat? “ We maaien, branden, plaggen, zorgen voor paarse heide. Dat kan bij ons, doordat we zo’n grote oppervlakte hebben. Wel gaan we nu naar wat kleinschaliger beheer. Maar bovenal voeren we een consistent beheer, niet afhankelijk van waar toevallig subsidie voor is. Ik denk dat we het daarom zo goed doen wat reptielen betreft.” aldus Leidekker, hoofdbeheerder bij de Hoge Veluw
