Working in Australian gaming venues, and shiftwork
Research into workplace influences on the gambling behaviour of gaming venue employees found that shiftwork was perceived by most employees as the key factor encouraging gambling by venue staff. Using a qualitative design, researchers visited venues in 5 regions of Queensland to interview 92 employees from hotels, licensed clubs and casinos. A thematic analysis uncovered key reasons for shiftwork being seen as more important than other workplace influences. These themes include: a lack of alternative social opportunities, only gambling venues are open after late shifts, staff tend to socialise with other hospitality workers, social isolation, gamble to fill in time, and shiftwork makes it easier to hide heavy gambling. However, some interviewees felt shiftwork discouraged them from gambling, because most gambling venues are closed after finishing late shift and shiftwork means they go out less overall. Other employees considered that shiftwork had no influence, because they find other activities in their time off and/or they just go home after a shift. Providing more regular shifts and promoting family and alternative social and recreational activities for staff are measures venues could implement to help counter these effects. Wang Zhaojun dans les contes populaires contemporains
Kwong Hing Foon : Wang Zhaojun in contemporary folk tales.
This article is derived from the author's doctoral thesis on Wang Zhaojun, that has been a most popular character in china for two millenia. The study bears on 35 tales recorded in the Xingshan district (Hubei), Inner Mongolia and Anhui, and recently printed in hardly accessible publications. These tales are first summarized and classified according to their geographical origin and their main themes. Then comes a study of the structures of the various plots that can be reduced to a few recurring patterns, and of the traits of character usually attributed to the heroine. Finally, after having reminded us of the main data, themes and motifs of the Zhaojun legend and underlined those elements which have survived in the folk tales, the author pinpoints the innovations which have transformed a character traditionally considered as a victim of the political cause into a heroic figure, devoted to the reunion of the Han people with the national minorities. As an appendix, a list of the stylistic devices characteristic of these tales is given. Kwong Hing Foon. Wang Zhaojun dans les contes populaires contemporains.
