Masculinidades em Internato, de Paulo Hecker Filho

    No full text
Published in 1951, Internato, a novel by Paulo Hecker Filho, narrates the misfortunes of a teenager to see or recognize himself as a homosexual in a boarding school. This is not a story common to the Brazilian literary tradition, which rarely shows this representation of homosexual teenagers. This article, in addition to introducing the author, offers a sample of the critical reception of the text and analyzes Paulo Hecker Filho\u27s narrative based on the relationships established by the protagonist with other schoolmates, especially with regard to the representation of masculinities present in the universe of the boarding school where the characters are located.

Atorvastatin inhibition of cytokine-inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in native endothelial cells in situ

1 Animal experimental studies have demonstrated that inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression correlates with neointima formation and is prevented by HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). In the present study we have investigated the underlying mechanism of action of these drugs in isolated segments of the rat aorta. 2 Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry revealed that tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) plus interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) synergistically induce iNOS gene expression in the endothelium but not in the smooth muscle of these segments while constitutive endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) abundance was markedly reduced. 3 Pre-treatment with 1 - 10 muM atorvastatin, cerivastatin or pravastatin decreased TNFalpha plus IFNgamma stimulated iNOS expression in the endothelium irrespective of the presence of the HMG-CoA reductase product mevalonate (400 muM). 4 Electrophoretic mobility shift assay experiments confirmed that the combination of TNFalpha plus IFNgamma causes activation of the transcription factors STAT-1 and NF-kappaB in native endothelial cells. Neutralization of these transcription factors by employing the corresponding decoy oligonucleotides confirmed their involvement in TNFalpha plus IFNgamma stimulated iNOS expression. Translocation of both transcription factors was attenuated by atorvastatin, and this effect was insensitive to exogenous mevalonate. 5 The present findings thus demonstrate a specific HMG-CoA reductase-independent inhibitory effect of statins, namely atorvastatin, on cytokine-stimulated transcription factor activation in native endothelial cells in situ and the subsequent expression of a gene product implicated in vascular inflammation. This effect may be therapeutically relevant and in addition provide an explanation for the reported rapid onset of action of these drugs in humans

Paulo Hecker Filho. Millôr Fernandes

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

In this work, a first study on Paulo Hecker Filho’s published poetic literature has been developed. Having worked as a poet, critic, short-story, novel and drama writer, translator and Brazilian editor, the author is an important, even though he is not much studied, exponent of Rio Grande do Sul literature. His work counts with dozens of books published, as well as a collection, currently available at DELFOS – Espaço de Documentação e Mémoria Cultural, a cultural space located at PUCRS, which supplies researchers with an extense list of materials for studying. In the following study, panoramically, a profile of this multi-facet author has been built, so that it is possible to identify his space and connections with the inner Gaucho literary system and with the national literary system as well. Futhermore, having use of literature theories, it has been elaborated an approach which aims to present the writer’s published poetic works, highlighting a list of characteristics of Heckerian’s poetry, which needs to be deeply and methodically analysed in studies which would have this purpose. By poiting the author’s profile, the importance and relevance of his engagement, the development of Gaucho literature is highlighted, so as the necessity of having developed studies which comprehend a vast research material, result of a life dedicated to the literary art. The aesthetic characteristics at Hecker Filhos’s work still await for studies interested in doing a formal analysis and they also provide, according to the results obtained from an early incursion, endless possibilities for the literary theory, literary history, critical genetics studies, among others

FROM SAIL TO STRUCTURE END-OF-LIFE SAILS AS A FEEDSTOCK FOR CIRCULAR MANUFACTURING

    No full text
The yachting industry currently does not have a waste-management plan for end-of-life (EOL) sailcloth. The most advanced sails produced by the world's largest sailmaker, North Sails, are flexible carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, and the aim of this project is to reclaim the highest-value components from North Sails' “3Di” range of sails, i.e. the carbon fibres, via two gasification-type processes. One process was conducted in a controlled air atmosphere (carried out by ELG Carbon Fibre (prior to 2022)), and the other in a controlled superheated steam (SHS) atmosphere, while undergoing pressure-swing cycles (carried out by Longworth). The successfully reclaimed carbon fibres were subsequently remanufactured into aligned discontinuous fibre reinforced composites (ADFRCs), using the High-Performance Discontinuous Fibre (HiPerDiF) manufacturing technology, invented at the University of Bristol, to lay out a possible waste-management route for EOL 3Di sails
