Radiocarbon, 62(4), (2020): 1001-1043, doi:10.1017/RDC.2020.53.We present new updates to the calendar and radiocarbon (14C) chronologies for the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela. Calendar ages were generated by tuning abrupt climate shifts in Cariaco Basin sediments to those in speleothems from Hulu Cave. After the original Cariaco-Hulu calendar age model was published, Hulu Cave δ18O records have been augmented with increased temporal resolution and a greater number of U/Th dates. These updated Hulu Cave records provide increased accuracy as well as precision in the final Cariaco calendar age model. The depth scale for the Ocean Drilling Program Site 1002D sediment core, the primary source of samples for 14C dating, has been corrected to account for missing sediment from a core break, eliminating age-depth anomalies that afflicted the earlier calendar age models. Individual 14C dates for the Cariaco Basin remain unchanged from previous papers, although detailed comparisons of the Cariaco calibration dataset to those from Hulu Cave and Lake Suigetsu suggest that the Cariaco marine reservoir age may have shifted systematically during the past. We describe these recent changes to the Cariaco datasets and provide the data in a comprehensive format that will facilitate use by the community.K.A.     Non-parametric Calibration of Multiple Related Radiocarbon Determinations and their Calendar Age Summarisation

    Due to fluctuations in past radiocarbon (⁠14C) levels, calibration is required to convert 14C determinations Xi into calendar ages θi⁠. In many studies, we wish to calibrate a set of related samples taken from the same site or context, which have calendar ages drawn from the same shared, but unknown, density f(θ)⁠. Calibration of X1,…,Xn can be improved significantly by incorporating the knowledge that the samples are related. Furthermore, summary estimates of the underlying shared f(θ) can provide valuable information on changes in population size/activity over time. Most current approaches require a parametric specification for f(θ) which is often not appropriate. We develop a rigorous non-parametric Bayesian approach using a Dirichlet process mixture model, with slice sampling to address the multi-modality typical within 14C calibration. Our approach simultaneously calibrates the set of 14C determinations and provides a predictive estimate for the underlying calendar age of a future sample. We show, in a simulation study, the improvement in calendar age estimation when jointly calibrating related samples using our approach, compared with calibration of each 14C determination independently. We also illustrate the use of the predictive calendar age estimate to provide insight on activity levels over time using three real-life case studies

    Pitch memory, labeling and disembedding in autism

    Background: Autistic musical savants invariably possess absolute pitch ability and are able to disembed individual musical tones from chords. Enhanced pitch discrimination and memory has been found in non-savant individuals with autism who also show superior performance on visual disembedding tasks. These experiments investigate the extent that enhanced disembedding ability will be found within the musical domain in autism. Method: High-functioning children with autism, together with age- and intelligence-matched controls, participated in three experiments testing pitch memory, labelling and chord disembedding. Results: The findings from experiment 1 showed enhanced pitch memory and labelling in the autism group. In experiment 2, when subjects were pre-exposed to labelled individual tones, superior chord segmentation was also found. However, in experiment 3, when disembedding performance was less reliant on pitch memory, no group differences emerged and the children with autism, like controls, perceived musical chords holistically. Conclusion: These findings indicate that pitch memory and labelling is superior in autism and can facilitate performance on musical disembedding tasks. However, when task performance does not rely on long-term pitch memory, autistic children, like controls, succumb to the Gestalt qualities of chords

    Flow patterns around longitudinal training dams

    With the intention to reduce the negative  effects of ongoing bed erosion, as well as to  improve several other river functions such as  protection against floods, provision of safe and  efficient navigation and ecology, a ‘pilot project  longitudinal training dams’ was initiated. The  training dams have recently been implemented  in the Waal between Tiel and Sind Andries. In  this project, river groynes have been  completely removed and replaced by dams  that lie parallel to the river bank. With help of  the longitudinal training dams, a two-channel  river system is created in which the river is  divided into a main and side channel. The  dams are placed in a continuous manner with  openings in between that are relatively small  compared to the dam length. At the beginning  and end of the dam an inlet and outlet region is  situated, as shown in Fig. 1.  The combination of inlet and openings  allows for water and sediment to be divided  between the main and the side channel. Both  inlet and openings are constructed with the  help of a porous rock-layer. The crest heights  can be altered by adding or removing stones.  This is expected to influence the amount of  water and sediment entering the side channel  and can therefore be used as a regulation tool.  A.J.F.
