Tan was guest editor for 'And Now China?', a special print edition of the Ctrl+P journal, which critically responded to the celebratory rhetoric’s of ‘China Now’ and other celebratory markers of China's global ascent in 2008. As well as the introductory article 'Dialogical Skirmishes', Tan also interviewed Hans Ulrich Obrist

Electron screening effect in the reactions He-3(d, p)He-4 and d(He-3, p)He-4

    No full text
The cross section of the reactions (3) He(d, p)(4) He and d((3) He, p)He-4 has been measured at the center-of-mass energies E = 5 to 60 keV and 10 to 40 keV, respectively. The experiments were performed to determine the magnitude of the electron screening effect leading to the respective electron-screening potential energy U-e = 219 +/-7 and 109 +/-9 eV, which are both significantly higher than the respective values from atomic physics models, U-e = 120 and 65 eV. Collaborative Art Practices in HE: Mapping and Developing Pedagogical Models

    No full text
This project asks ‘How is interdisciplinary collaboration "taught" in HE institutions?’ and ‘What pedagogical models can be identified and developed?’ Performing and Creative Arts departments in HE institutions engage students in collaborative practice within a singular discipline or across disciplines, through interdisciplinary or hybridised art forms, as curricula or extra-curricula activity. Where students are engaged with interdisciplinary collaboration within the curriculum, tuition may involve case studies of collaborative partnerships, psychometric tests, a trial and error approach to throwing creative individuals together, or any combination of these. This project aims to bring together ideas and modes of practices used in HE institutions and to present, as far as is possible, an overview of the current practices where interdisciplinary collaboration is a focal point of the learning activity. In brief, and in the context of Performing and Creative Arts departments in HE institutions, this development project aims to: Take a snapshot of current practice in HE Construct typologies of modes of practice Consider how pedagogies may be developed Disseminate documentation setting out, and commenting on, pedagogical approaches to collaborative practic

Experimental study on mid-infrared CO transition lines broadened by N2, He, and H2 at elevated temperatures

    No full text
Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been established as a strong technique for high-fidelity measurements at elevated temperatures. However, the accuracy of the measured data using TDLAS depends on the accuracy of the spectroscopic parameters. In this paper, the N2-, He-, and H2-perturbed collisional broadening coefficients of the CO P(0, 21), P(1, 21), and P(0, 37) lines were measured at 1040-2980 K. Ar-diluted mixtures were applied to measure these spectroscopic parameters at elevated temperatures up to 3000 K. Validation experiments highlighted that the measured temperatures and CO concentrations agreed well with the known values under thermal equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions. Comparisons of residuals in Voigt fitting highlighted that the N2-perturbed Dicke narrowing effects are stronger than the He- and H2-perturbed phenomena. The differences among species-perturbed high-temperature collisional broadening coefficients for the three transition lines were found to be closely related to the intermolecular forces and effective collision crosssections

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Liquid helium flows around an oscillating cylinder

    No full text
The complementary flows of normal viscous liquid helium (He I) and of superfluid helium (He II) around an oscillating obstacle, of rectangular cross-section, have been studied experimentally by using the particle tracking velocimetry technique, with solid deuterium particles. The observed particle behaviour in He II is very similar to that seen in He I. It seems therefore that, without some kind of special forcing acting differently on each superfluid helium component, on length scales which the experiment can access, the oscillating quantum flow mimics the classical one

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
