Screened hybrid functional applied to 3d(0)-> 3d(8) transition-metal perovskites LaMO3 (M = Sc-Cu): Influence of the exchange mixing parameter on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties
We assess the performance of the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) screened hybrid density functional scheme applied to the perovskite family LaMO3 (M = Sc-Cu) and discuss the role of the mixing parameter alpha [which determines the fraction of exact Hartree-Fock exchange included in the density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation functional] on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. The physical complexity of this class of compounds, manifested by the largely varying electronic characters (band/Mott-Hubbard/charge-transfer insulators and metals), magnetic orderings, structural distortions (cooperative Jahn-Teller-type instabilities), as well as by the strong competition between localization/delocalization effects associated with the gradual filling of the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals, symbolize a critical and challenging case for theory. Our results indicate that HSE is able to provide a consistent picture of the complex physical scenario encountered across the LaMO3 series and significantly improve the standard DFT description. The only exceptions are the correlated paramagnetic metals LaNiO3 and LaCuO3, which are found to be treated better within DFT. By fitting the ground-state properties with respect to alpha, we have constructed a set of "optimum" values of alpha from LaScO3 to LaCuO3: it is found that the optimum mixing parameter decreases with increasing filling of the d manifold (LaScO3: 0.25; LaTiO3 and LaVO3: 0.10-0.15; LaCrO3, LaMnO3, and LaFeO3: 0.15; LaCoO3: 0.05; LaNiO3 and LaCuO3: 0). This trend can be nicely correlated with the modulation of the screening and dielectric properties across the LaMO3 series, thus providing a physical justification to the empirical fitting procedure. Finally, we show that by using this set of optimum mixing parameter, HSE predict dielectric constants in very good agreement with the experimental ones
Stacking effects on the electronic and optical properties of bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2
Employing the random phase approximation we investigate the binding energy and Van der Waals (vdW) interlayer spacing between the two layers of bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2 for five different stacking patterns, and examine the stacking-induced modifications on the electronic and optical/excitonic properties within the GW approximation with a priori inclusion of spin-orbit coupling and by solving the two-particle Bethe-Salpeter equation. Our results show that for all cases, the most stable stacking order is the high symmetry AA' type, distinctive of the bulk like 2H symmetry, followed by the AB stacking fault, typical of the 3R polytypism, which is by only 5 meV/formula unit less stable. The conduction band minimum is always located in the midpoint between K and Gamma, regardless of the stacking and chemical composition. All MX2 undergo an direct-to-indirect optical gap transition going from the monolayer to the bilayer regime. The stacking and the characteristic vdW interlayer distance mainly influence the valence band splitting at K and its relative energy with respect to Gamma, as well as, the electron-hole binding energy and the values of the optical excitations
Structural transitions and transport-half-metallic ferromagnetism in LaMnO3 at elevated pressure
By means of hybrid density functional theory we investigate the evolution of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) parent compound LaMnO3 under pressure. We predict a transition from a low-pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator to a high-pressure ferromagnetic (FM) transport half metal (tHM), characterized by a large spin polarization (approximate to 80-90%). The FM-tHM transition is associated with a progressive quenching of the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions which transform the Pnma orthorhombic phase into a perfect cubic one (through a mixed phase in which JT-distorted and regular MnO6 octahedra coexist), and with a high-spin (S = 2, m(Mn) = 3.7 mu(B)) to low-spin (S = 1, m(Mn) = 1.7 mu(B)) magnetic moment collapse. These results interpret the progression of the experimentally observed non-Mott metalization process and open up the possibility of realizing CMR behaviors in a stoichiometric manganite
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
