    67-74To efficiently use Terfenol-D rods, six of its structures were studied. Finite element analysis was used to estimate and compare the hysteresis, eddy current, and coil resistance losses of the six Terfenol-D rods. The loss factors of the rods were calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, three structures of Terfenol-D rods were manufactured, and the loss factors of the rods were measured. The results showed that an untreated rod had the largest hysteresis and eddy current losses on the outer diameter surface, and the overall hysteresis loss of the rod was the smallest. Compared with the untreated rod, the eddy current and hysteresis losses on the outer diameter surface of sliced and slit rods reduced, the overall hysteresis loss of sliced and slit rods increased, and the overall eddy current loss of sliced rods reduced; the hysteresis and eddy current losses on the surface of the sliced rods were less than that of the slit rods, and the overall eddy current loss of the sliced rods was less than that of the slit rods; moreover, the eddy current loss of each rod was larger than its hysteresis loss. The numerical calculation values of the coil resistance loss basically agreed with the theoretical calculation values. The finite element simulation calculation values of the loss factors of the Terfenol-D rods agreed with the experimental test values

In 2001, Zhang Zhenhuei translated into Chinese the book The Ambassador of the Middle Kingdom. After the release of the translation, on the invitation of Zhang Xiping, he began with his wife to translate all the works of Michal Boym previously translated from Latin by Kajdański. Cooperation of the Chinese interpreter with Kajdański lasts for several years and has been assessed by him as the only example of such extensive cooperation of Chinese scholar and Western sinologist in the study of sinological issues and translation of foreign classical sinological works. Along with E.     Innovative Vietnamese Research on Mekong Deltaic Coastal Processes

    Over the last few decades, the Mekong Delta Coast has undergone many physical changes that have increased its vulnerability. Issues that have grown in importance are erosion, human occupation of coastal and estuarine mangroves, decreased sediment supply by the Mekong River and subsidence due to groundwater extraction. These issues have led to the loss of coastal and estuarine land and mangroves, increasing flood vulnerability and salinity intrusion. Recently, young and promising Vietnamese researchers have undertaken a number of in-depth studies to increase our understanding of the above issues. The objective of the present paper is to give a concise description of their work and place it into a broader context. The topics concerned are satellite mapping of coastal landuse changes, numerical simulation of the tide and wave climate and of coastal erosion, coastal and estuarine mangrove squeeze, wave and current damping in mangroves and wave transmission through bamboo fences. The main findings are that (1) coastal landuse has changed significantly over the last decades with the largest change due to conversion of mangroves to aquaculture and a modest change due to coastal erosion, (2) the understanding of the tide and wave climate and of the erosion has increased due to successful numerical modelling, (3) the role of mangrove squeeze along the coast and along the estuaries has been assessed, (4) the understanding of wave and current damping in mangroves and of wave transmission through bamboo fences has increased through the combined effort of laboratory and numerical modelling.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Coastal Engineerin

    Morphodynamics of a seasonal inlet: A case study using remote sensing and numerical modelling for cua dai inlet, central vietnam

    Cua Dai Beach located adjacent to Cua Dai Inlet is a typical, seasonally varying tidal inlet. This famous beach has suffered extreme erosion since 1995 due to an apparent irregular-periodic process, a decrease of sediment supply from the river and its estuaries and increased squeeze by coastal developments. The main objective of this study is to unravel the physical processes that control the morphological development of Cua Dai Inlet while challenged by the fact that it is a data-limited environment. In order to identify and quantify the main processes governing the evolution of Cua Dai Beach and thereby aiming to explain the morphological changes and extreme erosion in recent years, a new approach was developed. Historical shoreline positions and sediment budget changes were derived from satellite images using empirical engineering assumptions. In addition, numerical models were used to investigate in detail sediment transports and morphodynamics under the influence of seasonal waves and rivers as well as the anthropogenically-driven impacts. Results of shoreline change rates indicate that Cua Dai Beach (located on the northern side of Cua Dai inlet) experienced an average erosion of 12m/y during the period from 2000 to 2010 and erosion continued further to the north while the southern coast of the inlet accreted with a mean rate of 11m/y. The overall system showed a significant sediment loss of about 243,000–310,000 m3/y. The annual cycle of two past morphological periods has been numerically simulated to evaluate the behavior of the system without and with human interventions. The first morphological simulation without the impact of the resorts successfully reproduced an overall erosion trend at the northern coast while the formation of an ebb tidal bar was also reproduced. The second morphological simulation reproduced the impact of the resorts that have been constructed along Cua Dai Beach. Simulations indicate that the presence of the resorts has enhanced the propagation of the existing erosion further to the north.     The presentation is about a cataloging project completed by the author in 2017. The project comprised cataloging twelve artist books for the Special Collections department at University of Houston Libraries. In the presentation, the author explained what a Cartonera book was, outlined the cataloging process and some issues popped up during the process, and talked about one particular artist book that needed additional thoughts as to whether it is still considered a book or not. Some lessons learned are covered at the end of the presentation.Librarie

    Thermal Analysis of Terfenol-D Rods with Different Structures

    To reduce the heating of the Terfenol-D rod and evaluate its working efficiency, six kinds of Terfenol-D rods were designed, and the temperature field of the rods was simulated and calculated using the finite element method to obtain the temperature distribution. The results showed that the untreated rod had the highest temperature; the temperature was higher in the middle and lower at both ends; higher on the outer diameter surface; and lower on the inside. When compared to the untreated rod, the temperatures of sliced rods and slit rods decreased, and the temperature of sliced rods was lower than that of slit rods; the temperature of slit rods was higher in the middle and lower at both ends; the temperature distribution of sliced rods was more uniform relatively; the slice treatment rod had the lowest temperature and the best heat suppression effect. Three structural rods were chosen and manufactured from a total of six that were tested. It shows that the temperature of all rods was higher in the middle and lower at both ends after 30 min of operation. The actual temperature of untreated rod was 34 °C, the actual temperature of radially slit rod was 32 °C, and the actual temperature of sliced rod at both ends was 28 °C. The tested temperature distributions of three rods agreed with the calculated ones

    Analytical and experimental study of an ultrasonic horn with a bend angle

    An ultrasonic horn is a key component in power ultrasonic longitudinal vibration systems, and the most common horns are designed to allow vibration to travel along a single straight axis. However, change of the propagation direction is required in such applications as ultrasonic cleaning of the inner surface of a bent pipe, ultrasonic-assisted turning for a deep concave workpiece, and ultrasonic bone cutting devices. To address this requirement, this work proposes an angled horn comprising two uniform rods of finite length, which can be excited to resonate in longitudinal mode to change the propagation direction of a longitudinal vibration. Experimental comparison of the working frequencies of the designed and fabricated angled horns validated the effectiveness of the proposed design method. Experimental tests also showed that longitudinal vibration excited by a transducer along the axial direction was successfully transferred from the input end to the output end via the angled horn. Furthermore, the linear vibration characteristics of nine prototype vibration systems (composed of one transducer and nine angled horns) were obtained by measuring the vibration amplitudes induced by various excited voltages applied to the transducer.</jats:p
