UV and VUV ionization of organic molecules, clusters, and complexes
The generation of organic particle beams is studied in combination with photoionization using UV radiation at 266 nm and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light at 157 nm. Single-photon ionization with pulsed VUV light turns out to be sensitive enough to detect various large neutral biomolecular complexes ranging from metal?amino acid complexes to nucleotide clusters and aggregates of polypeptides. Different biomolecular clusters are shown to exhibit rather specific binding characteristics with regard to the various metals that are codesorbed in the source. We also find that the ion signal of gramicidin can be increased by a factor of 15 when the photon energy is increased from 4.66 to 7.9 eV
Cathodoluminescence (CL) is the emission of light from a material, induced by the interaction with an incident electron. Setups for measuring cathodoluminescence inside a transmission electron microscope allow for simultaneous measurements of both emitted CL photons and the transmitted electrons that produced them on a single particle level. Due to energy and momentum conservation, it is clear that each emitted photon corresponds to an energy loss and a momentum transfer to the electron. Recent improvements in direct electron detectors, in particular those that use the ASIC Timepix3 are making it possible to study coherent CL on an event-by-event basis. This means that one can detect an individual electron and the individual photon it emits by verifying that they have been detected at the same time. One can consequently perform measurements on both particles. In this work the key requirements, which are needed to do experiments in the single electron-single photon regime are outlined. An experimental investigation of four different setups concerning their suitability to this kind of experiment is presented: the thin film, the multi-slit mask, the bulk under aloof excitation and the microsphere under aloof excitation. Finally, in-detail measurements regarding the thin film are laid out, as this approach seems to be the most promising for future experiments as part of the ongoing Quantum Optics with Electron-Photon Pairs (QOEPP) project
The development of laser cooling techniques has led to a plethora of exciting experiments, from investigating quantum-mechanical phenomena such as Schrödinger cat states and Bose-Einstein condensates to basic tests of the standard model of physics using the unprecedented sensitivity of atom interferometry. This thesis describes the design and first steps of a cold atom setup with potassium to implement lattice atom interferometry (LATIN), to investigate light induced atom-atom interactions or to coherently drive hyperfine transitions using the near field of a density modulated electronbeam. The laser setup is designed to produce the desired frequencies to cool potassium atoms, and the controlling system, including DDS frequency generators, has been set up. Also, simulations for magnetic field coils have been carried out
When electrons interact with a material, they can induce the emission of light—a phenomenon known as cathodoluminescence (CL). This emitted light may originate either directly from the electron impact or through intermediate processes, classified as coherent or incoherent CL. A primary distinction between these mechanisms lies in the temporal delay between the electron-matter interaction and subsequent photon emission. Additionally, the underlying excitation processes may be distinguished by detecting electron-photon coincidences using advanced time-resolved sensor technology, such as detectors capable of registering single-particle events with nanosecond precision. In this Master's thesis, a coincidence measurement setup using a Timepix3 camera and single-photon counting modules is presented in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). A statistical evaluation method for analyzing time differences between electron-photon pairs is introduced to reveal and interpret temporal correlations. Finally, the experimental setup is tested on a silicon membrane and a micro diamond containing silicon vacancy centres to study electron-photon correlations in coherent and incoherent cathodoluminescence
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Atom interferometers have proven to be one of the most accurate devices to measure accelerations such as gravity. The high sensitivity of atom interferometers to potential energy changes can also be used to measure the interaction between the atoms. A particular type of these are light-induced dipole-dipole interactions, which are predicted to be even caused by incoherent and near-resonant light fields. In this thesis, a Rb-87 Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) trapped in a single well potential is (unevenly) split into a double-well potential such that the average atom density in each well is different. After illuminating the atoms with near-resonant light, the density dependence of the light induced dipole-dipole interaction will lead to a relative phase shift visible in the interference pattern. For the external light field, two setups using a flashlamp as an incoherent light field source and a frequency stabilized laser as a coherent source were built and used for first measurements
Atom interferometry is a powerful tool for probing fundamental physics, including tests of quantum effects of gravity and searches for fifth forces and dark energy. A key limitation of conventional atom interferometers is the finite free-fall time of the atoms, which constrains the achievable interrogation time and thus the measurement precision. This limitation can be overcome by using an optical lattice to levitate the atoms against gravity, thereby extending the interaction time and enabling higher sensitivity. For efficient trapping of cold atoms in the optical lattice potential it is necessary to cool the atoms to low temperatures. This thesis describes how to generate a cold cloud of atoms using a 3D magneto optical trap (MOT) and gray molasses. A laser setup for gray molasses on the D1 line was designed and built. This will enable us to reach temperatures in the few -range in future experiments. Additionally, the imaging system was calibrated to provide quantitative measurements of both atom number and temperature. By optimizing the existing D2 light setup, we were able to cool and trap in a 3D MOT. We achieved a maximum atom number of atoms in our cloud
Elektronen Spin Resonanz Spektroskopie innerhalb eines Transmissionselektronenmikroskops
Electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study the dynamics of spin samples, with a broad range of applications in biology, chemistry, materialscience, medicine, and physics. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) enables the investigation of structures at the atomic level. To take advantage of both, we describe the integration of ESR in a TEM. We construct a custom-made miniaturized ESR setup on the tip of a TEM sample holder. The strong magnetic field of the TEM’s objective lens separates the two energy states of the spins. This in-situ ESR measurement will simplify and expedite the workflow of research using both ESR and TEM, with comparable spin sensitivities to commercial spectrometers. Our ESR-TEM sample holder may enable the investigation of spin systems, their dynamics, radicals, electrochemical reactions, and radiation damage, most of which were previously invisible in the TEM.Die Elektronenspinresonanz (ESR) und die Kernspinresonanz (NMR) untersucht die Dynamik von Spinproben und bieten ein breites Spektrum an Anwendungen in Biologie, Chemie, Materialwissenschaft, Medizin und Physik.
