    Dream and Reality of Earthquake Prediction

    The Large-Scale Earthquake Countermeasures Law was put into effect when I started my career as an earthquake scientist. During my early career, I was devoted to administrative jobs related to the Tokai earthquake prediction. However, I had been skeptical of this program, because I have watched several evidence that cast doubt about its expected outcome. Thus, it may be my destiny that I took part in the abolition of the Tokai scheme. On my retirement, it is not a bad idea to present my experience as a government official and professor of Kyoto University; dream and reality of earthquake prediction. Based on my 30-year long experience, I would like to advise that it causes a trouble to establish a system using immature science

    Uplift in the Northern Wakayama Prefecture

    Imamura (1929) found an uplift between the Wakayama and Kainan cities in the northern Wakayama Prefecture based on leveling data. Yoshida et al. (2011) also found another uplift along the Kinokawa River, east of the Wakayama city. I reexamined leveling data from the first survey in the 1890’s to the latest one in this region and found that these two uplift episodes are not overlapped each other in space and time. Uplift found by Imamura was rapid till 1960’s and decelerated afterward. This deceleration may be correlated to the uplift at the Kainan Tide gauge station during early 1970’s - mid 1990’s. Area of uplift by Yoshida et al. had subsided till 1980’s and turned to rapid uplift then. Recent observations with InSAR reveal two spots of uplift in the Wakayama city and south of the Kinokawa River. These observations suggest that at least 5 episodes of uplift occurred in northern Wakayama Prefecture during 130 years

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     2018年西日本豪雨で生じた広島地方の地表面変動を, 人工衛星搭載合成開口レーダーにより検出を試みた. 宇宙航空研究開発機構のALOS-2画像を干渉解析し, 地表面変動とコヒーレンス変化, 及び, 加色混合法による強度変化の抽出を行った. ALOS-2の広域観測モードによる観測は発災直後になされたものの, 空間分解能が大きいため, 顕著な変化を検出できなかった一方, ALOS-2の高分解能モードの観測で, 東広島市-呉市境界の野呂山山麓に複数の強度変化を検出した. 災害を挟む画像のベアにおいてコヒーレンスの低下が認められたが, 山間部など災害前からコヒーレンスの低いところでは, 必ずしも強度変化と一致しない航空写真判読結果との比較では, 今回の災害に伴う斜面崩壊等の地表変動の検出には, コヒーレンス変化よりも強度変化の方が適していたと考えられる.We analyzed ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 images acquired before and after the torrential rain in the Hiroshima area, western Japan in July, 2018 to detect loations of slope failures or landslides. We produced color composites of intensity images and computed change in coherence. ScanSAR images that was acquired right after the disaster did not detect significant changes in intensity possibly due to their coarse spatial resolution. On the other hand, strip-map mode images revealed several spots of change in intensity on the northern flank of the Mt. Norosan at the boundary of the Kure and Higashi-Hiroshima cities. Although we recognized decrease of coherence for the pair of images spanning the disaster, those were not necessarily consistent with intensity changes in mountainous areas. Comparing the present results with those deduced from areal photos, we consider that intensity changes are more suitable for the detection of surface changes than coherence changes in this disaster

    Gigantic Earthquake Model along the Nankai Trough and Limits of Earthquake Science

    The provisional damage estimates based on the gigantic earthquake model along the Nankai trough shook the society. As a member of the Committee for this model, I am afraid that we should have examined the scientific validity of the model through serious discussion of the community of the earthquake science. We must recognize the limit inherent in the nature of earthquake and finite resources for observation.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
