This work examines the progressive deterioration in the relations between the national government of Mexico and the Mexican Communist Party in the 1920s until the communists were finally forced into clandestine work. Some of the factors that motivated the confrontation were: on one hand, the consolidation of the post-revolutionary state in Mexico and the improved relations with the United States and on the other hand, changes in Comintern policy. Based in documents from the agn Mexico (Dirección General de Investigaciones Políticas y Sociales), the author illustrates the forms of surveillance and repression conducted by the Mexican government against communists, who were considered a threat to political stability

Francis Bacon: Painting in A Godless World

    No full text
Throughout his career, Francis Bacon (1909-1992) made many anti-religious and, more specifically, anti-Christian statements. Bacon was a militant atheist but his atheism was not a simple dismissal of religion and religious belief. He exploited the symbols of Christianity, especially the Crucifixion and the Pope, in order to show its untenability in the modern age. Setting out to account for Bacon's recurrent and sustained use of religious symbols, Rina Arya explains how the artist redeployed religious iconography to convey an experience of the human condition, specifically animalism and mortality. By placing the work within the context of post-war philosophical pre-occupations with the death of God, the author provides a robust framework in which to view and interpret Bacon's complex images. Refreshingly original, this book marks a new approach to appreciating the work of one of the leading artists of the twentieth century

Teaching Seakeeping for Ships and Offshore Structures: A Delicate Balance

    Get PDF
Seakeeping is traditionally taught for Naval Architecture using mainly ships as examples. Many books are also available in a similar way citing ships as examples. However, in order to cater for students in offshore or Ocean Engineering, a paradigm shift is inevitable. The author teaches Seakeeping Part of the Module Marine Dynamics for Stage 2 students of both streams: Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering. The available hours are limited, and within this span of time the students of both streams have to be taught basic seakeeping aspects citing examples of both ships and offshore structures. This is rather a challenge. As the same group of students study another Module Marine and Offshore Mechanics, a delicate balance need to be maintained so that both groups of students can have equal understanding of the subsequent module with ease and comfort. The author has now done it for last 5 years and according to him, most of the students finally manage to understand the module quite well. The author thinks that teaching and learning in Stage 2 has been the root of the final success

ANALISIS FRAMING BERITA POLITIK DALAM SURAT KABAR HALUAN RIAU RINA Universitas Islam Riau, Pekanbaru, Indonesia [email protected] ABSTRACT Framing in political news is one of the analyzed used to see how the media frames an existing event. Framing is formed by a syntactic structure that deals with journalists arranging events, statements, opinions, quotes, and observations. In the syntactic structure, the most important thing is how the media interpret, understand, and frame a case that has been reported. The aim of the author is to examine framing analysis as an object of research because the researcher wants to know the syntactic structure of political news in Haluan Riau newspaper when presenting and delivering an event significantly. By examining political news, it will be seen the reality of the media that is the object of the research and what issues are highlighted. In this study, the framing structure contained in the Haluan Riau newspaper on December 16, 2019 to January 16, 2020 was examined using the Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki models. The problem in this the syntactic structure of political news in Haluan Riau newspaper? The method used is the methid of content analysis (content analysis), with a qualitative approach. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques used were documentation and hermeneutic techniques. In analyzing the data the writer used the relevant theory, namely Eriyanto (2001). The results of the study conclude that this news is aquipped with all units observed in the syntactic structure such as headlines, leads, background information, quotes, sources, statements, amd closing in Haluan Riau newspaper seen from the aspects of the title, point of view, background of events, reality/facts, sources, aspects of the news, and the closing of the news expert

CoCoa: A Linked Network Visualization System of Co-citation and Co-author Relationships

    No full text
We usually use a text-based search engine while surveying research papers. Such search systems have difficulties for novice researchers in case they do not know appropriate keywords or do not understand the positions of papers. Many visualization tools of citation networks have been proposed to help this task. These tools demonstrated that not only text information of papers but citation relationships and co-author relationships also are helpful clues for research survey. We propose CoCoa, a linked network visualization of co-citation and co-author relationships for surveying research papers. Our system visualizes both citation and co-author networks at the same time. To make comparison and grasp of correspondence between co-citation and co-author networks easier, the system treats both a paper and an author as bags of words and cluster them into topics applying LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) at the same time. Based on the clustering result, it places the clusters of a citation network by a hybrid force-directed and space-filling algorithm. The position of topic clusters in the networks would have an influence on the correspondence of a particular topic in the networks. Our system extracts the clusters which consist of the common combinations of topics in two networks. Then it reuses the positions of the clusters in a citation network as the initial cluster positions of a co-author network, supposing there are a large number of authors.EuroVis 2019 - Short PapersText Visualization and Application

Case study: Wind-assisted ship propulsion performance prediction, routing, and economic modelling

    No full text
In this paper, a vessel model for the performance of wind-assisted ships is combined with a routing tool to assess the fuel savings available from the installation of both one and two Flettner rotors when travelling along a Great Circle Route path. This is combined with an economic analysis to assess commercial viability for these hybrid concepts. The case study is performed in collaboration with DAMEN shipyards, who have provided a design for a wind-assist concept to sail in the Baltic Sea, that, since January 2015, is an Emission Control Area where a sulphur limit content of 0.1 % is enforced on the ship fuels. Results for this case study are presented in terms of fuel savings and payback period analysis, where the reference case is an identical ship sailing without wind propulsors. For the 5,150 dwt general cargo vessel travelling at a speed of 10 knots, average fuel savings of 2.99% were obtained in the Baltic Sea for the single Flettner scenario, and 6.11% for the double Flettner scenario. A discussion of key engineering and design constraints for these ships is included.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Ship Hydromechanics and StructuresShip Design, Production and Operation
