Co-creating an enabling reading environment for and with Namibian children

    No full text
Namibian children's appreciation of literature is falling behind. While children develop functional literacy, enough to search the web and read for information finding, their skills plateau due to their limited forms of reading. Thus this paper draws on a participatory approach with different stakeholders aiming to co-create a stimulating and enabling reading environment for Namibian children.\ud \ud Four different participatory workshops were designed to discover ways to deepen the reading culture, in particular by exploring contexts in which children would read and also author books. Acknowledging the different roles of stakeholders in an ongoing national agenda of enhancing the Namibian reading culture, it becomes clear that the various aspirations of children as expressed in their designs need to be accounted for, interpreted and translated into a feasible plan of action. The paper outlines a way of using participatory design workshops at a number of levels to obtain design inspirations for further interventions towards enhancing kids' reading experiences

Cattle farming is one of the business activities with the aim of optimizing Indonesia's local natural resources, especially in terms of the availability of food to help improve the welfare of people's lives. The development of cowshed management is needed by utilizing technological innovations to improve business efficiency of cattle breeders. From the results of an interview with Mr. Edi who is one of the cattle breeders in Sambit Village, cleaning cow dung is a very tiring activity because it still uses a manual tool, namely a shovel. In addition to the large pile of cow dung waste in the stables, the smell of ammonia gas produced by cow dung can disturb the environment. Therefore, the author designed a Cow Manure Cleaning Tool in a Microcontroller-Based Cage. The results of the design of the tool can be concluded that the initial purpose of the design is to facilitate the work management process of farmers in cleaning manure and facilitate the utilization of cow dung waste both for biogas and organic fertilizer by selecting the cleaning mode on the blynk application which is controlled using Arduino Mega 2560 with Arduino software. The IDE and AC motor drive the cleaning equipment accompanied by a water pump to further facilitate the performance of the tool in cleaning cow dung to the dung reservoir

Implementation and Evaluation of Data Analysis Strategies for Time-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy

    No full text
Time-resolved optical spectroscopy plays a key role in illuminating the mechanisms of many fundamental processes in physics, chemistry, and biology. However, to extract the essential information from the highly complex time-resolved data, advanced data analysis techniques are required. Here we present the implementation strategies and the evaluation of the familiar global lifetime and target analysis as well as the not so widely adopted lifetime distribution analysis (LDA). Furthermore, we demonstrate the implementation of analysis strategies dealing with a number of artifacts inherently present in data from ultrafast optical experiments. The focus of the work is placed on LDA as it allows invaluable exploration depth of the kinetic information contained in the experimental data. We establish a clear regularization procedure for the use of LDA in ultrafast optical spectroscopy and evaluate the performance of a number of factors that play a role in the reliable reconstruction of lifetime distributions. Our results show that the optimal regularization factor can be determined well with the L-curve and the generalized cross-validation techniques. Moreover, the performance evaluations indicate that the most efficient regularization norm is the identity matrix. The analytical procedures described in this work can be readily implemented and used for the analysis of any time-resolved data

AbstractOlder people are present in a variety of nursing settings and have distinct care needs. Evidence about the competencies required is crucial when developing the profession. The aim of the study was to describe competence areas relevant in gerontological nursing. A qualitative, descriptive study design was used with 27 participants included. Finnish gerontological nursing professionals who worked at several healthcare organizations and in education were interviewed in five focus-group interviews. The interviews were carried out between October 2017 and February 2018 and were analyzed using inductive content analysis. The study is reported according to SRQR guidelines. Analysis indicated four main competence areas for gerontological nursing: clinical nursing competence; competence in promoting health and well-being; interaction competence; and ethical competence. Registered nurses (RNs) must possess multiple competencies when caring for older people which should be taken into account in nursing and education.Abstract Older people are present in a variety of nursing settings and have distinct care needs. Abstract Background: Nurses have an essential role in providing high-quality palliative care to patients and their families. Hence, they require adequate palliative care education. However, there is only limited insight into how final-year nursing students perceive palliative care education in undergraduate nursing programs. This study aimed to describe nursing students’ perspectives of the development needs of palliative care education. An additional two aims emerged based on the collected data, namely, to describe the preferred education for palliative care and the factors which promote or hinder palliative care learning during undergraduate nursing studies. Methods: The research was guided by a descriptive qualitative approach and applied inductive content analysis. The frequencies (f) of identified codes (reduced expressions) were counted to show the noteworthiness of each category in relation to the entirety. The participants were final-year nursing students (n = 766) who had participated in a national survey. Results: The inductive content analysis identified three unifying categories. The first was ‘Development needs and views of palliative care education’ (f = 524), which consisted of the main categories ‘the need to develop palliative care education’ (f = 414) and ‘meaning of palliative care and its education’ (f = 110). Secondly ‘Preferred types of palliative care education’ (f = 1379), including the main categories ‘teaching contents in palliative care education’ (f = 905), ‘teaching methods for palliative care learning’ (f = 393), and ‘placement of palliative care studies’ (f = 81). Thirdly ‘The facilitators and barriers to palliative care learning’ (f = 401), consisting of the main categories ‘factors facilitating palliative care learning’ (f = 66) and ‘barriers to palliative care learning’ (f = 335). Conclusions: This study provides detailed information about nursing student’s perspectives of palliative care education and its development needs. Hence, the results are relevant to decision-makers who want to develop undergraduate nursing curricula. This study highlights that palliative care education should be developed by ensuring that all students have equal access to palliative care education provided by highly competent teachers. Possibilities for clinical placements or visits to palliative care units during the education should also be improved. The participating students felt unprepared to provide high-quality palliative care even though they responded that palliative care is an important topic in their nursing studies

The title of this research is "Aesthetic Value Contained in the Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini Song in Bencah Kelubi Village, Tapung District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province", the research objective discussed in this study is to see the Aesthetic Value Contained in the Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini song in the village. Disaster Kelubi, Tapung District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. The theory used is the theory of Jakob Sumardjo (2000: 142) which discusses aesthetic values which are divided into two values, namely intrinsic value and extrinsic value. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis research method using qualitative methods, which are the subjects in this study, namely the chairman of the Al-Berkah tambourine group, namely Helvi Desra and several members of the Al-Berkah tambourine group Nurlaila and Yuni, lovers of the song Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini, namely Nelamani and Dahyuli, along with the singer outside the Al-Berkah tambourine group, Mr. Khabil, the village head bencah kelubi Mr, Yuasmar. The data techniques used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. From the results of the research that the author has done on the aesthetic value of the Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini song, that the aesthetic value of the Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini song can be seen from the first, namely its intrinsic value or tangible value with its extrinsic value, namely supporting value or can be called value proponents of intrinsic value. This tangible value can be seen from the musical instruments or musical instruments used, such as bass 1,bass 2,bass 3, rhythm 1, rhytim 2, ketipung 1,ketipung 2, ketipung 3 and tambourine. Furthermore, this implementation is usually adjusted to the tambourine group invited by the community who hold events such as circumcision events, weddings, and offerings name of the child or take a bath. Furthermore, the extrinsic value can be seen from the meaning of the song Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini, the message of the Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini song and the value of life contained in the song Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini, which can make an impression on everyone who witnesses the song Marhaban Ya Nurul Aini
