Plasticity genes, the social environment, and their interplay in adolescents with and without ADHD. From behaviour to brain
Contains fulltext :
145226.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD - is strongly heritable, but influences of the social environment also plays an important role in interaction with genetic factors. Some genes have been posited to influence an individual’s susceptibility towards environmental experiences, so-called plasticity genes. This can be beneficial in a positive environment, but a disadvantage in negative environments. Richards investigated the effects of the social environment, genes, and their interplay on phenotypical, cognitive, and neural correlates of ADHD: social behaviour, reward sensitivity, response inhibition, and brain volumes.
The results indicate that when focusing on reward sensitivity or response inhibition, the data lend support to differential susceptibility toward positive social environments based on one’s genotype. Moreover, Richards shows that for specific brain structures, gene-environment interactions can depend on age as well. Besides these interactions, several main effects were also found of the social environment on each included outcome measure. Importantly, most findings were similar for participants with and without ADHD, which suggests the effects of the social environment, genes, and their interaction contribute in a more general way to differences in social behaviour, reward sensitivity, response inhibition, and brain volumes.Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, 23 november 2015Promotor : Buitelaar, J.K. Long-term variability of downward particle flux in the deep northeast Atlantic: Causes and trends
At 3000 m depth the downward flux of particulate matter shows substantial seasonal and interannual variation. Complete annual records for eight of the past 14 years have been examined in the light of mixing depths derived from the OCCAM general circulation model and euphotic zone chlorophyll concentration and productivity, which were derived from the SeaWiFS satellite colour sensor. The annual flux was particularly high in 2001 due to a late summer deposition exceeding previous records several fold and this year was also characterised by very early shoaling of the mixing depth in spring and a very high surface spring chlorophyll concentration. Other years that were somewhat unusual in having either high or low flux at depth were not in general associated with unusual patterns of mixing or productivity. The percentage of the annual organic carbon primary production which reaches 3000 m varies from 0.6 to 1.2% except in 2001 when it reached 3.4%. A mechanistic relationship between upper-ocean processes and deep-ocean particle flux remains elusive and various explanations are suggested for this which need now to be addressed. In the spring, the timing of first shoaling of mixing, enhancement of productivity and increased particle flux at depth have all advanced during the 14 years of study by about 2 days per year, suggesting a similar trend as has been observed for surface phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and seabirds probably caused by wide-scale environmental changes
Podcast for the Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health on my role as a deputy editor in chief for JCPPA:CoCA (Comorbid Conditions of ADHD) project
For this podcast, we are joined by Dr. Catharina Hartman, Associate Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation (ICPE) at the University Medical Centre, Groningen, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of our Open Access journal, JCPP Advances.Catharina’s research team aims to advance the understanding of the onset, and course, of childhood onset psychiatric disorders and uses data from longitudinal studies to explore the interplay between genetics, behavioural and environmental factors.Catharina has (co-) authored over 200 peer reviewed papers, and in this podcast, highlights some of the studies and findings that have had the greatest influence or are especially important to her, as well as provides insight into what barriers exist when translating research into practice.Catharina talks us through some of her recent work with the CoCA (Comorbid Conditions of ADHD) project, and discusses what CoCA is, its overall goal, and why it is important for researchers and clinicians, who work in CAMH, to also think about prevalence and comorbidity in adults.Furthermore, Catharina also discusses our Open Access JCPP Advances journal and details the importance of Open Science and rapid publication for the research community, in particular for those working in child and adolescent mental health
