Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This study focuses on higher education politics during economic crises and how the neoliberal ideology emerges in decision making during those times. The Finnish society and education politics have been affected by economic crises such as the 1990s recession, global financial crisis and the European debt crisis between 2008 and 2018. The neoliberal agenda also grew stronger in the 1980s and it had an impact on economic thinking and the government’s status. The presumption in this study was that economic crises provide a fertile ground for the actions of neoliberal higher education politics. The study was able demonstrate how neoliberalism comes forth in higher education politics during economic crises, by using the neoliberal education politics agenda by Kivirauma, Rinne and Simola (1999) as a theory. The research methods used in this study were thematic analysis and theory-based content analysis. Six documents concerning higher education politics were chosen as data. The documents were from the different terms of office of the Finnish government during economic crises. Thematic analysis answered the first research question of what kind of decisions concerning higher education are made during economic crises. Theory-based content analysis was used to determine how the neoliberal higher education agenda arises during economic crises, which was the second research question. Relevant literature was used to support the analysis. In this study the solutions and decisions made in times of economic problems were close to the goals of neoliberal ideology. There were some minor differences between the governments’ decision-making, but mostly the decisions made involved savings, resource cuts and the convergence of economic life and higher education. A new eleven-part neoliberal higher education politics agenda was formed during the analysis and became one of this study’s results. Economic crises provide good conditions for neoliberal politics. Swift reforms are easier to follow through by using economic excuses during these crises

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on luoda kuvaus Kansallisen Kokoomuksen koulutuksellisista tasa-arvomääritelmistä. Tutkimuksessa itse aineiston analyysi tapahtui puolueohjelmista poimittuja ilmaisuja tarkastelemalla. 1980-luvun aikainen hyvinvointivaltiouskon mureneminen ja kokoomuksen nousu hallitukseen merkitsi suuria muutoksia peruskoulun ja yksilön valinnan suhteenThe goal of this thesis is to study the definitions of educational equality expressed by the National Coalition Party of Finland. The purpose is also to create a timeline concerning the birth of the Finnish comprehensive school and focus on the party’s views about it. The Finnish comprehensive school was based on educational equality, where every student had equal opportunities regardless of their socioeconomic background. The research method was a qualitative theory-based content analysis. The material was collected educational science literature, political platform database Pohtiva and the party’s official web pages. The literature provided a historical overview about comprehensive school and equality concepts. The analysis itself was conducted by studying expressions from the platforms. The expressions were summarized, grouped and modified into equality definitions, which were based on previous theories about equality concepts. The conservative equality concept was a dominant concept in the party’s platforms throughout every decade studied. Neoliberal concept of equality was the second most dominant concept. Sometimes the concept of equal opportunities appeared in the platforms, but in small amounts. The party’s stance towards comprehensive school was doubtful. Individuals were seen as different from each other and they feared the school’s homogenous effect on those individuals. However the party had little power when the school system was being built in the 1960s and 1970s because of their oppositional position in the parliament. In the 1980s the faith toward the welfare state started to crumble and at the same time the National Coalition Party rose to government. This meant big changes in comprehensive school and individual’s choices

The ideal subject and power in career guidance

    No full text
In this doctoral dissertation, the construction of the ideal subject, produced through the practices of education and career guidance, is explored in relation to technologies of knowledge, subjectivity and power. The focus is on the practices of guidance that aim to shape individuals' attitudes and behaviour according to the goals of the knowledge economy. In this study, individuals are referred to as ideal subjects of education and labour market citizens, shaped by the practices of guidance. The power of guidance is interpreted through Michel Foucault's conceptualization of power. Guidance practices appear as pastoral power, aiming to ensure the well-being of the counsellees in society. At the core of pastoral power is the shaping of individuals' behaviour and entire lives. The study consists of three scientific articles and a summary. The data for the study includes education policy documents from governmental departments and interest organizations (N=9) and interview data from guidance experts (N=15). In the summary, the results of the sub-studies are examined through Foucault's dimensions of knowledge, subjectivity and power, addressing three research questions: 1. What goals does guidance aim to achieve in society? 2. What should the young individual, the target of guidance, be like? 3. How does the power of guidance manifest? Foucault’s dimensions are technologies of truth, forming the 'truth' of what must be thought. The concept of the ideal subject binds technologies and sub-studies together, answering the question of how the ideal subject produced through guidance practices is constructed and what it is like. Guidance is defined in the study as a form of power but also as a target. It is influenced by the discourse of the knowledge economy, emphasizing the utilization of human capital for economic growth and competitiveness. Individuals' abilities, knowledge and skills are harnessed in the labour markets, where people utilize the expertise acquired through education. The discourse of the knowledge economy demands that young individuals educate themselves to develop skills and swiftly move into the workforce to utilize their expertise for economic growth and competitiveness. Previous research, however, has demonstrated the increasing difficulty for young individuals to enter the job market. Transitions from education to employment are uncertain, and the risk of ending up outside the labour market and education has grown. Guidance aims to ensure seamless transitions from school to work and societal integration. The study scrutinized how guidance sought solutions to the challenges of labour markets, social justice and lifelong learning. Guidance emerged as a service tailored to the needs of the knowledge economy and labour market policies, prompting individuals to identify and develop their expertise. Young people targeted by guidance must shape themselves into responsible individuals ensuring their employability. They must understand and evaluate their own abilities and themselves and realistically align these assessments with their future. The power of guidance manifested in the study as pastoral power, through which guidance practitioners conveyed the demands of governmental discourses to the youth, moulding them into education and labour-market citizens. Based on the results, young individuals should perceive themselves as proper education and labour-market citizens. The ideal subject of education and labour-market citizenship knows themselves and their competencies, seeks guidance at any stage of the life course, and ensures their employability while progressing seamlessly from education to the workforce. The study also suggested how setting the goals of the knowledge economy as societal goals creates the need for a guidance society. It acts as a regulatory mechanism ensuring the guidance of citizens into suitable education and labour-market citizens in line with the goals of economic success. The study argues that the ideal subject of education and labour-market citizenship has become a normal assumption for the youth. Through guidance practices, the study constructed a description of how the counsellees should develop and perceive themselves. The description of guidance and the guidance society in the study forms a depiction of how, in the discourse of the knowledge economy, guidance becomes a tool for governing the population. This narrows the diverse possibilities of guidance to encompass education and labour-market transitions and ensuring the usage of human capital.Tässä väitöstutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, miten opinto- ja uraohjauksen (ohjauksen) käytäntöjen kautta tuotettu ihannesubjekti rakentuu tiedon, subjektin ja vallan teknologioiden kautta.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
