    Development of welding lung assessment (WELA) as a prognosis tool of lung impairment from heavy metal exposure among Malaysian welder

    Welding is a fundamental process of metal joining in metal industries and widely used for mild steel and stainless-steel components. Despite the number of advantages which human can adopt from this technology, this process also produces hazardous gaseous and toxic fumes which later on may affect welder’s health and contribute to environmental pollution. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop the risk prediction model on the lung deterioration upon metal based industrial workers specifically in automotive industry. As for data collection, an experimental study includes physical assessment, questionnaire, biological monitoring will be conducted in both pilot test and industrial case study. Based on the statistical correlation analysis, the risk prediction model will be developed and verified in another metal base industry (Case study 4). A user-friendly software program will be developed by using R-Graphical User Interface (RGUI). The expectation outcome from this study is to develop a new lung risk prediction model on that able to detect on early symptoms of lung deterioration. Hence, it can contribute to better understanding on the effects of heavy metals exposure,.

    Behavior and impact of polyamide nylon to the indoor air quality during SLS powder handling process

    The increasing trend associated with Additive Manufacturing (AM) on the application of polyamide-nylon in selective laser sintering (SLS) prototype printing is due to economic and environmental factors. However, number of conducted researches regarding the hazard of exposure to human from powder handling during 3D printing process is very limited especially in the usage of polyamide nylon powder. The emitted particles from the SLS powder handling process were found as a cause to respiratory and cardiovascular disruptions including asthma and lung cancer to the operators. Given AM technology is one of the key focus areas under the National Policy on Industry 4.0, this study aims to support the 4th strategy of Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan 2016-2020 in protecting workers rights to a safe, healthy and conducive working environment. Usually, SLS requires operators to mix virgin and recycle powder or known as refresh rate to feed into SLS chamber. The usage of several type of polyamide nylon which is virgin, recycle and mix powder (refresh rate) appear to be a potential source of dust concentration. This research undergoes characterization to investigates the behaviour of polyamide nylon powder (PA12) in terms of morphology and particle size distribution of polyamide nylon. .

    Association between thermal condition, thermal acceptability and student's performance in naturally ventilated classroom for school building enhancement

    Malaysian comfort standard based on the MS 1525: 2019 have established for acceptable indoor conditions for comfort cooling in non- residential building. However, no comfort standard for young children had yet been established. Determinants of thermal comfort were assumed to be similar for both children and adults. However, metabolic rate, clothing and limited adaptive behaviour of children may cause differences. The new ASHRAE comfort standard 55-2013 specifies an extension of naturally ventilation standard with elevated air movement up to 0.8 m/s (without personal control) and 1.2 m/s (with personal control). Malaysia has high temperature, high humidity level, and the usage of only ceiling fans in the school buildings may result in the needs of higher air movement than the limit specified by ASHRAE 55-2013 standard. It has been established that thermal comfort is vital to student's perception, health and performance. A conducive classroom should consider both the thermal acceptability range and its effect on the performance of the students. Thus, this study aims to study the relation of thermal acceptability with student's performance and enhance the thermal comfort condition of students in the classroom with ceiling fans through CFD analysis. Physical measurement parameters such as indoor temperature, air velocity, relative humidity and, mean outdoor temperature will be measured along with subjective measurement on thermal acceptability, and performance assessments. .

    Conceptual design of a small non-rigid airship with particular attention to its static and dynamic stability

    Small size airships are traditionally designed and built based on experience rather than scientific approaches. Hence, its design approach has only been discussed in a very limited number of literatures. Thus, with these challenges at hand, a conceptual design study of airship in Malaysia was done to identify and explore the basic technology of airship design. This study focused on the conceptual design, determination of basic specifications and preliminary design of small size non-rigid airship for monitoring missions in Malaysia. The preliminary design focused on static stability, dynamic stability and development of a virtual simulator. The mathematical model of the designed airship for dynamic stability was rederived based on literatures and is then programmed to Graphical User Interface (GUI) with the aid of Matlab software. The airship was designed to fulfill the design specification suitable for monitoring with maximum speed of 40 km/h, cruising speed of20 km/h, operating altitude of 120 m and able to carry payload of at least of 6 kg. The dimension of 10 m length with maximum diameter of2.3 m was chosen with a pair of 0.25 hp engines to accomplish the desired specification. The designed airship was statically stable with trimmed angle of attack of approximately 0.18 degree. Through mathematical model of airship dynamics, following a detailed procedure including stability considerations, the airship had been analyzed and found to be dynamically stable with low control power and the time taken for the longitudinal response of elevator and vectored thrust to become stable was in the order of approximately 80 seconds while the lateral response of rudder becomes stable in approximately 30 seconds. The result of this study concluded that the designed airship fulfilled the design specification for monitoring mission and the designed airship was statically and dynamically stable during cruising speed. The virtual simulator also effectively provides a better understanding of the response of the designed airship through visualization

    The development of welding fumes health risk assessment tool for automotive component related industries

    The environmental quality index had been applied and used widely for water and ambient air quality. However, indices for industrial indoor air pollutants are relatively novel and limited. Currently, the welding fume exposure risk assessments are largely focused on a single welding fume constituent approach because the regulatory standard for compliance only caters for a single constituent. However, in reality, welders are simultaneously exposed to multiple welding fume constituents at once. To fulfill this gap, welding fumes health index was developed by assigning doses rating and health risk rating to the multiple constituent of welding fumes and aggregated into index values. In the initial stage of this study, the type of health risks included in the index (sensitizer, respiratory toxins, target organ toxins, and carcinogenicity) and the related technical characteristics were determined by using quality function deployment approach. Personal samplings of welding fumes were conducted in Plant 1 and 2 to assess the concentration of metal constituents during the investigation of case studies along with a series of pulmonary function tests and questionnaire on persistent symptoms. Index values were derived from the aggregation analysis of metal constituent constituents while significant persistent symptoms and pulmonary functions were recognized through statistical analysis. The proposed index was then applied to a selected welding industry for verification purposes (Plant 3). The results of the study showed that the index value was directly proportional with the percentage decrease of the welder’s pulmonary functions in all investigated plants and the significant persistent symptoms (Plant 1: mean index value=1.42, FVC=84.09%, FEV1=88.51%, PEF= 68.58%, significant persistent symptom: sore or dry throat; Plant 2: mean index value=1.40, FVC=87.86%, FEV1=91.14%, PEF=71.68%, significant persistent symptom: none ;Plant 3: mean index value=1.30, FVC=89.65%, FEV1=91.96%, PEF= 80.57%, significant persistent symptom: none). The developed welding fumes health index showed its promising ability to rank welding workplace that associates well with persistent symptoms and pulmonary functions of the investigated welders

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) is a discipline with broad scope involving many specialized fields. In other words, occupational health and safety encompasses the social, mental, and physical. This study focuses on the sustainability of the river by having wastewater treatment at the Kenny Leather (M) Sdn. Bhd. The waste management sector is an important employment sector. However, workers in the waste management sector are faced with various risks. They are exposed to risks such as manual handling (manipulating waste), working postures (standing), vibrations (driving vehicles, work equipment), chemical substances, biological agents, work organization (pace of work, job control), mechanical hazards (cuts, bruises). The data collection was carried out through site investigation using HIRARC form and interview with the worker in the factory as the methodology. The objective of this study is to promote the occupational environment adaptable to enhance the sustainability of the environment especially water and promote the safety to the employer and employees at the workplace based on the existing potential hazard. This study was encouraged to implement alternative options such as cleaner production, waste minimization and waste re-utilisation in order to waste pollution. The 5-M model were used to identify the causes of the crane error in five major parts man, machine, medium, management and mission. Then, the Fault Tree Analysis described and elaborated in more details about the content in 5-M model. All parties with full support of Malaysia government should play major roles and responsibilities by making sure that appropriate safety practices are carried out to minimize the accident rates at the workplace and have strategies and measures need to be taken toward an effective management of water resources, pollution control and prevention of environmental degradation

    Occupational safety and health practice: a study at Infrastructure construction work

    Safety is the state of being “safe”, the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types of consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In that case, Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) is an act that ensure the well-being of workers in a broad scope of many specialized fields. This study is focused on the construction of a police headquarters located in Seriab, Perlis. A big number of construction companies in Malaysia might not perform safety practice for their workers, lack of safety appliances, and did not perform a regular safety check-up on their workers as the reason was they want to earn more profits and they took the safety measures of their foreign workers for granted. Note that most of construction workers in Malaysia are immigrants. The data collection was carried out through site investigation using Preliminary Hazard analysis (PHA), HIRARC form and interview session with a worker in the construction site. The objective of this study is to spread the awareness of the importance of safety among workers in the construction site based on the existing potential hazards. This report was initially to identify the hazard on the construction site and to analyse the occupational safety and health factor in the workplace. The results are to analyse and suggest recommendations for improving occupational safety and health act in the construction site. Practicing a good safety measures in the workplace will ensure the well-being of workers

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
