Is the Distance to Default a Good Measure in Predicting Bank Failures? Case Studies
This paper examines the movements of the Distance to Default (DD), a market-based measure of corporate default risk, of eight failed Japanese banks in order to evaluate the predictive power of the DD measure for bank failures. The DD became smaller in anticipation of failure in many cases. The DD spread, defined as the DD of a failed bank minus the DD of sound banks, was also a useful indicator for deterioration of a failed bank’s health. For some banks, neither the DD nor the DD spread predicted the failures. However, those results were partly due to lack of transparency in financial statements and disclosed information.

Paepalanthus strictus Koern.
Paepalanthus strictus Koern. in Martius & Eichler, Fl. Bras. 3(1): 319 (1863) ≡ Dupatya stricta (Koern.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 746 (1891). Type: BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: “Crescenti in prov. Minarum”, s.d., Gardner 5258 (lectotype, here designated: B!, duplicates: G!, P!). Koernicke (1963) described Paepalanthus strictus based on two collections. The specimen Gardner 5258 in B is more complete and contains annotations by the author, thus is here designated as the lectotype.Published as part of Trovó, Marcelo & Sano, Paulo Takeo, 2010, Taxonomic survey of Paepalanthus section Diphyomene (Eriocaulaceae), pp. 49-55 in Phytotaxa 14 on page 54, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.14.1.4, http://zenodo.org/record/477875
Will the U.S. Bank Recapitalization Succeed? Eight Lessons from Japan
During the financial crisis that started in 2007, the U.S. government has used a variety of tools to try to rehabilitate the U.S. banking industry. Many of those strategies were used also in Japan to combat its banking problems in the 1990s. There are also a surprising number of other similarities between the current U.S. crisis and the recent Japanese crisis. The Japanese policies were only partially successful in recapitalizing the banks until the economy finally started to recover in 2003. From these unsuccessful attempts, we derive eight lessons. In light of these eight lessons, we assess the policies the U.S. has pursued. The U.S. has ignored three of the lessons and it is too early to evaluate the U.S. policies with respect to four of the others. So far the U.S. has avoided Japan’s problem of having impaired banks prop up zombie firms.
Periprosthetic acetabular bone loss using a constrained acetabular component

authorWe describe two patients with a constrained acetabular component who required treatment for recurrent dislocation showing postoperative periprosthetic acetabular bone loss. These hips required revision surgery and demonstrated considerable bone loss caused by the migrated acetabular component. Impingement may have occurred with increased stress at the bone-prosthesis interface, and the sharp ends of screws with a metal shell may have gradually plowed up the acetabular bone. These failures illustrate the potential risk of using a constrained acetabular component
Species of the Parasitic Genus Duboscquella are Members of the Enigmatic Marine Alveolate Group I
Small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences of Duboscquella spp. infecting the tintinnid ciliate, Favella ehrenbergii, were determined. Two parasites were sampled from different localities. They are morphologically similar to each other and both resemble D. aspida. Nevertheless, two distinct sequences (7.6% divergence) were obtained from them. Phylogenetic trees inferred from maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony revealed that these two Duboscquella spp. sequences are enclosed in an environmental clade named Marine Alveolate Group I. This clade consists of a large number of picoplanktonic organisms known only from environmental samples from various parts of the ocean worldwide, and which therefore lack clear characterization and identification. Here, we provide morphological and genetic characterization of these two Duboscquella genotypes included in this enigmatic clade. Duboscquella spp. produce a large number of small flagellated spores as dispersal agents and the presence of such small cells partially explains why the organisms related to these parasites have been detected within environmental genetic libraries, built from picoplanktonic size fractions of environmental samples. The huge diversity of the Marine Alveolate Group I and the finding that parasites from different marine protists belong to this lineage suggest that parasitism is a widespread and ecologically relevant phenomenon in the marine environment
