On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the author recalls his connection to that memorable event. The origin and development of the plan that led to the continuing publication of volumes in The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell is sketched, and the author’s role in giving Ronald W. Clark access to the Archives to write the first major biography of Russell is disclosed

Political visions : George Russell, 1913-1930

THESIS 6067George Russell, poet and author, was a contemporary of W. B. Yeats and a figure central to the Irish Literary Revival. My thesis concentrates on his editorship of two journals, the Irish Homestead and the Irish Statesman, in the turbulent period between 1913 and 1930. I argue that Russell?s journalism enjoyed a cultural agency previously under-acknowledged by critics. Russell is now perceived to have been an eccentric, with mystical interests subsidiary to the main course of Irish nationalism. I contend rather that Russell was the central theorist of an Irish cultural doctrine subsequently obscured by post-Civil War political change. Russell\u27s periodical contributions were expressions of his commitment to an esoteric principle of Irish statehood, anathema to an increasingly orthodox Free State

One-pot syntheses of pseudopteroxazoles from pseudopterosins : a rapid route to non-natural congeners with improved antimicrobial activity

    No full text
Rapid one-pot methodologies to prepare pseudopteroxazole (1) and novel congeners from abundant natural pseudopterosins have been devised. This is highlighted here with the first synthesis of the marine natural product homopseudopteroxazole (2) utilizing a novel, silver(I)-mediated catechol to benzoxazole transformation. Pseudopteroxazoles and isopseudopteroxazoles exhibit potent activity against a range of important Gram-positive pathogens including Mycobacterium spp. and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. Several non-natural pseudopteroxazoles exhibited strong activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, thereby displaying a broader spectrum of antibiotic activity compared to pseudopteroxazole

Lectotype of Melitaea telona Fruhstorfer, 1908
The present authors designated a ♁ lectotype specimen for Melitaea phoebe telona Fruhstorfer, 1908 (Tennent & Russell, 2023) in the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN), Paris. As can be seen from an illustration (Tennent & Russell, 2023: 133, fig. 1a), the abdomen was detached from the specimen before the designation was made, and was not dissected (Fig. 5).

Benyamini(2023:86,fig.2)illustrated the♁genitalia, apparently of this specimen,labelled“6270– LECTOTYPE M. telona /Jerusalem, Palestine (Israel), VDP = 0.740mm ”, although there is no mention of either ‘Jerusalem’ or ‘Israel’ on the labels of the lectotype (Tennent & Russell, 2023: 133, fig. 1a); nor is there any acknowledgement of the MNHN. The Curator of Lepidoptera at MNHN acknowledged that the abdomen was loaned to Benyamini in 2022 (Rodolphe Rougerie, in litt. to the first author, 23 May 2023).

We believe that the number “6270” refers to a drawing by John Coutsis (see similar numbers in Oorschot & Coutsis (2014), accompanying genitalia drawings by Coutsis), as it is in the same numerical sequence as other numbered drawings figured by Benyamini (2023: 86, Fig. 2).
Published as part of Russell, Peter J. Alcohol messages in prime-time television series

    No full text
Alcohol messages contained in television programming serve as sources of information about drinking. To better understand the ways embedded messages about alcohol are communicated, it is crucial to objectively monitor and analyze television alcohol depictions. This article presents a content analysis of an eight-week sample of eighteen prime-time programs. Alcohol messages were coded based on modalities of presentation, level of plot connection, and valence. The analysis reveals that mixed messages about alcohol often coexist but the ways in which they are presented differ: whereas negative messages are tied to the plot and communicated verbally, positive messages are associated with subtle visual portrayals

The 1400 {\AA} absorption band is reported to be the most highly structured with low resolution instrumentation1instrumentation^{1}. These closely spaced absorptions are assigned in terms of CHC - H and CClC - Cl symmetric stretching modes. The corresponding spectrum of CD2Cl2CD_{2}Cl_{2} is utilized to aid in the assignments. Several differences are noted in the spectra of the two compounds
