Towards Ordinal Data Science
Order is one of the main instruments to measure the relationship between
objects in (empirical) data. However, compared to methods that use numerical
properties of objects, the amount of ordinal methods developed is rather small.
One reason for this is the limited availability of computational resources in
the last century that would have been required for ordinal computations.
Another reason -- particularly important for this line of research -- is that
order-based methods are often seen as too mathematically rigorous for applying
them to real-world data. In this paper, we will therefore discuss different
means for measuring and 'calculating' with ordinal structures -- a specific
class of directed graphs -- and show how to infer knowledge from them. Our aim
is to establish Ordinal Data Science as a fundamentally new research agenda.
Besides cross-fertilization with other cornerstone machine learning and
knowledge representation methods, a broad range of disciplines will benefit
from this endeavor, including, psychology, sociology, economics, web science,

"Vienna: A city beyond aging" - Revisited and revised
In 1988 two of the authors (Lutz and Hanika 1988) published a short piece in the IIASA newsletter, POPNET, entitled Vienna, a city beyond aging, pointing out that already in 1970 the proportion of the population of Vienna above age 60 had reached a peak of 28 percent which was followed by a decline. In other words, contrary to the general aging trend in Europe, the population of the city of Vienna had become younger in recent decades. This article also presented projections produced by the Austrian Statistical Office (Statistik Austria) which indicated that Vienna's population would get older again in the future, but not return to the high 1970 level by 2050. In 1988, this short paper was considered interesting enough for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to have it reprinted as the cover story of their widely circulated newsletter (AAAS 1989)..

Iris Hanika stosuje w swojej powieści zasady krytyki ideologicznej, poprzez które ujawnia mechanizmy nadawania znaczeń we współczesnych aktach pamięci. Powieść Haniki koncentruje się wokół dwóch różnych tendencji semantyki pamięci o Szoa. Z jednej strony demaskuje ona, poprzez postać melancholijnego archiwisty, mitologizację dyskursu pamięci, której zasadniczym punktem jest pozbawianie pierwotnego sensu aktów komunikacji dotyczących Zagłady. Z drugiej strony znużony tzw. biznesem Szoa bohater próbuje wydostać się poza tradycyjne ramy pamięci instytucjonalnej i w swej tęsknocie za autentycznymi wspomnieniami usiłuje wzbudzić w sobie empatię w stosunku do Zagłady.

Iris Hanika verwendet in ihrem Roman Das Eigentliche einen ideologiekritischen Ansatz, mit dem sie die verborgenen Mechanismen der Bedeutungszuweisung in aktuellen Erinnerungshandlungen offen legt. Das literarische Projekt Hanikas verfolgt in dieser Hinsicht zwei strukturell gegenläufige Tendenzen der Gedächtnissemantik über die Shoah: Zum Einen entlarvt es mit der Figur des melancholischen Archivars die Mythologisierung der Gedächtnisdiskurse, deren Kern die Sinnentleerung der Aussagen über die Shoah bildet. Andererseits verlässt der des Shoah-Business überdrüssige Protagonist die gut eingeübten Bahnen des institutionellen Gedenkens und bemüht sich in seiner Sehnsucht nach authentisch-wahrer Empfindung um Empathisierung und Betroffenheit in Bezug auf die Vernichtung der Juden.In her novel Das Eigentliche Iris Hanika applies ideological criticism strategies to cover the mechanism of transmitting the meaning which are inherent to the current memory acts of Shoah. Hanikas novel focuses on two different sorts of memorial semantics. On the one hand the author covers by the figure of the melancholic archivist the mythologisation of the Shoah discourse which manifests in the process of losing of genuine sense of the contemporary communication about Shoah. On the other hand the protagonist who seems to be grown tired of the ‘Shoah business’ makes an attempt in breaking out of the institutional remembering frames. In his longing for an authentic remembering he tries to evoke the empathy for annihilation of the European Jews
Demographic composition and projections of car use in Austria
Understanding the factors driving demand for transportation in industrialised countries is important in addressing a range of environmental issues. Previous work has identified demographic factors as important influences on demand, in addition to economic factors. While some studies applied a detailed demographic composition to analyse past developments of transportation demand, or estimated parameters based on models that include demographic variables, projections for the future have never accounted for future compositional changes in the population. In this paper, we combine cross-sectional analysis of car use in Austria with detailed household projections to explore the sensitivity of projections of car use to the specific type of demographic disaggregation employed. We find that particular demographic characteristics of households can have important effects on aggregate demand through the combined effect of differences in demand across different types of households, and changes in the future composition of the population by household type. For example, the highest projected car use--an increase of about 20 per cent between 1996 and 2046--is obtained if we apply the value of car use per household to the projected numbers of households. However, if we apply a composition that differentiates households by size, age and sex of the household head, car use is projected to increase by less than 3 per cent during the same time period. These findings suggest that the inclusion of demographic factors in transportation demand modelling should extend beyond their use in historical decompositions and as controls in model parameter estimation to explicit consideration of future demographic changes.
Path tracing in Production: The Path of Water
Physically-based light transport simulation has become a widely established standard to generate images in the movie industry. It promises various important practical advantages such as robustness, lighting consistency, progressive rendering and scalability. Through careful scene modelling it allows highly realistic and compelling digital versions of natural phenomena to be rendered very faithfully. The previous Path Tracing in Production courses have documented some of the evolution and challenges along the journey of adopting this technology, yet even modern production path-Tracers remain prone to costly rendering times in various classes of scenes, of which water shots remain among those most notoriously demanding. While this series in the past years covered a wide range of different topics within one course, this year we took the unusual step to focus on just one, the water-related challenges that we encountered during our work on Avatar: The Way of Water. Despite its seemingly simple nature, water causes a very multifaceted range of issues: specular surfaces cause spiky and sparse radiance distribution at various scales and in different forms, such as underwater caustics, godrays as well as fast-moving highlights and complex indirect on FX elements such as splashes, droplets and aeration bubbles. The purpose of this course is to share knowledge and experiences on the current state of the technology to stimulate active exchange in the academic and industrial research community that will advance the field on some of the challenging industrial benchmark problems. We will first give an overview of the nature of the singularities and its practical implications and then dive deeper into appearance and material aspects of water and the objects it interacts with. In the remaining sections, the course will focus on some specific aspects in more technical detail, providing both a solid mathematical background as well as practical strategies. Furthermore, we discuss some of the remaining unsolved problems that hopefully will inspire future research
Isolation of chitosan and chitosan-glucan from waste mycelium of Penicillium sp. and their application
Cílem této práce byla isolace polysacharidů z odpadního mycelia z produkce penicilínu z firmy Biotika a.s. (SR). Zpracováním biomasy byly získány dva cenné polysacharidy chitosan a chitosan-glucan. Proces isolace byl popsán s využitím matematického modelu Plackett-Burman, na jehož základě byl proveden ?scale-up? až do poloprovozních měřítek. Oba polysacharidy byly charakterizovány pomocí metod FT-IR, UV-VIS, NMR spektroskopie, k analýzám byla využita i acidobazická titrace, SEM fotografie a další.
Chitosan má díky svým vlastnostem široké uplatnění od potravinářství až po medicínu. Bylo ověřeno, že mycelární chitosan má rovněž antibakteriální účinky jako chitosan získaný z krabích skořápek. Pro jeho další využití v biomedicíně byla provedena modifikace zavedením alkylového řetězce, kde takto získaný amfifilní polysacharid může najít uplatnění jako nosič hydrofobních léčiv. Tyto vlastnosti byly otestovány na derivátech chitosanu pomocí hydrofobního barviva. K modifikaci chitosanu byl využit směsný anhydrid a byla připravena řada derivátů od N-hexanoylated chitosanu až po N-hexadadaecanoylated chitosan.
Chitosan-glucan byl charakterizován a testován in vivo jako látka pro hojení ran.The aims of this work was to isolate polysaccharides form the waste material from penicillin production, obtained from Biotika a.s. Processing mycelium two valuable polysaccharides were obtained: chitosan and chitosan-glucan. The process of isolation has been described using a mathematical model of Plackett-Burman, on the basis of which was done "scale-up" to the semi-production (pilot plant).
Both isolated polysaccharides were characterised using FT-IR and NMR or UV-VIS spectroscopy.
Chitosan has, due to its characteristics, wide range of applications from food to medicine, it was verified that fungal chitosan has also antibacterial properties as crab shell chitosan. For its further application in biomedicine was modified by introducing alkyl chains, where the amphiphilic polysaccharides thus obtained, can find application as a carrier for hydrophobic drugs. As a model, to test the aggregation properties, a hydrophobic dye was used.
Mixed anhydride was used for acylation of chitosan, where N-acylderivatives were prepared.

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh single parent yang memiliki kesulitan dalam mengasuh anak. Hal tersebut ditambah dengan kondisi pandemi yang mewajibkan siswa belajar secara daring melalui internet. Banyak anak mengalami kesulitan dan membutuhkan bantuan dalam belajar. Relasi orangtua sangat penting dalam pembelajaran. Namun berdasarkan fakta lapangan menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas single parent mengalami hambatan dalam membimbing anak mereka dalam belajar online.
Fokus penelitian ini adalah (1) Bagaimana relasisingle parent dan anak dalam mewujudkan belajar yang efektif pada masa pandemi covid-19 di Desa Genengan Kecamatan Doko Kabupaten Blitar? (2) Apa hambatansingle parent dan anak dalam mewujudkan belajar yang efektif pada masa pandemi covid-19 di Desa Genengan Kecamatan Doko Kabupaten Blitar?. Tujuan penelitian untuk mendiskripsikan (1) relasisingle parent dan anak dalam mewujudkan belajar yang efektif pada masa pandemi covid-19 di Desa Genengan Kecamatan Doko Kabupaten Blitar. (2) hambatansingle parent dan anak dalam mewujudkan belajar yang efektif pada masa pandemi covid-19 di Desa Genengan Kecamatan Doko Kabupaten Blitar.
Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dimana peneliti berperan hanya sebagai pengamat terhadap fenomena yang diteliti. Lokasi penelitian adalah desa Genengan, kecamatan Doko, kabupaten Blitar Jawa Timur. Responden penelitian ada tiga orang yakni bapak Sunoto, ibu Umi, dan ibu Siti yang masing-masing adalah single parent yang telah memiliki anak dan berusia pada jenjang pendidikan SD dan diatasnya. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara terstruktur, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data adalah teknik analisis dengan mengacu pada teori Miles dan Huberman.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwasingle parent membentuk relasi kepada anak dengan cara mendekati anak secara mendalam serta orang tua mencoba untuk menghadirkan orang lain yang lebih mampu dalam mencukupi kebutuhan psikis anak dalam mendampingi belajar sehingga sang anak dapat berfokus pada pembelajaran di era pandemi secara lebih efektif.
