The aim this doctoral work is to gain a better understanding of the thermoregulatory strategies
adopted by a diving sea bird, the king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus). The recording of
the temperature of deep and peripheral tissues allowed characterising two different
thermoregulatory strategies in relation with the activity at sea. During inactive phases at the
surface, all tissues were kept warm (36 to 41°C), except the skin of the foot. During dive
bouts, only a small core in the region of the heart and the liver is maintained normothermic.
The rest of the body showed temperature drops, including the pectoral muscle (-3°C) and the
abdominal region (-2 to -9°C). Regarding heat transfer, both of these strategies illustrate
paradoxical features. First, the elevated peripheral temperatures during surface periods are
associated with significant heat loss and consequently necessitate the maintenance of an
important metabolic rate (estimated using the heart rate method) to compensate for this heat
loss. Second, during dive bouts, the take in place of an effective peripheral vasoconstriction,
to preserve body heat, is delayed. In more, episodes of active thermolysis have been
described, thereby demonstrating that body temperature drops are not only the consequence of
the constraining environment, but that vascular adjustments also support enhanced heat loss.
This work suggests that the perfusion of the skin during surface periods is associated with an
important energetic cost that is mandatory to allow the replenishment of the subcutaneous fat
layer. During dive bouts, king penguins potentially benefit from the deferral of at least part of
the thermoregulatory cost and the slow down of the metabolism of cold exposed tissues to
reduce their mean metabolic rate, and thus, improve their breath-hold capacity
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Thermoregulation strategies related to physiological and environmental constraints in king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus)
The energetic cost of foraging activities in King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) consists to reach favourable areas, realizes depth diving to attempt fish patch and resting in high latitude cold water. Several studies have shown that resting in cold water could be represent a more expensive cost than realized depth diving. Indeed, this paradox is probably linked with contrasting thermoregulation processes. During daylight, a general hypothermia occurs and is believed to reduce energy expenditure. At sunrise occurs a re-warming to normothermia, contributing to increase heat-loss during the night. We hypothesise an energetic conflict between thermoregulation and digestive processes. During daylight, the organism may be unable to assimilate the end product of prey digestion (free fatty acids) inside the peripheral subcutaneous adipose tissues (SAT), because skin is no more blood perfused. During the night, re-warming and re-connecting to blood circulation peripheral tissues could be inevitable to end the assimilation of FFA inside the SAT. In a first step, we have reproduced the conditions of a resting night at sea and events of rewarming skin temperature, using a sea water tank in which king penguins equipped with internal temperature loggers were maintained several days. In a second step, we have tested a generalisation of our hypothesis studying body temperature variations on penguins fast and feed. Finally, we have measured the cost to maintain normothermia in cold water with respirometry measures and investigated peripheral vasodilation with body temperature variations and infrared thermography
Improving the success of reinforcement programs for a critically endangered species : the Common hamster (Cricetus cricetus)
The Common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) is one of the most endangered mammal in Europe. In Alsace, relict and fragmented populations persist. Population reinforcements have been implemented since the 2000s as an attempt to preserve the species. My thesis sought to identify solutions to improve these reinforcements by examining two main factors: an extrinsic one (a temporary pre-release in a semi-natural environment, known as soft-release) and an intrinsic one related to the age of hamsters at the time of release (adults and subadults). Main results of my work highlighted that a soft-release increased the reactivity of hamster females when facing predation risk, resulting in better survival after release compared to naïve females of the same age. This difference was noticeable for up to one month after release. Furthermore, female hamsters released into the wild 1.5 or 3 months after their birth in captivity had a similar survival rate and reproduction than one-year-old adult females. These findings can be used to inform conservation actions and improve the success of population reinforcements
Dispersal possibilities and refugial habitats in a intensive agricultural landscape fragmented by a dense road network : the case of small animals in the Bas-Rhin plain
Habitats and landscape fragmentation, caused by linear land transports infrastructures, is one of the major cause for the current loss of biodiversity. Among those infrastructures, road is a major cause of fragmentation, especially as it possess specific traffic-linked effects, which induces wildlife-vehicles collisions and landscape pollution. In order to decrease those negative effects, mitigation measures are taken, among which wildlife crossings, enabling wildlife to cross the road. Road also creates new potential habitats for small wildlife species in anthropogenic and fragmented landscapes. In this essay are shown (1) the potential as habitat of different road-linked elements; (2) the possibility to anticipate wildlife-vehicles collisions in order to improve the position of mitigation measures; (3) the importance of methodology in the evaluation of wildlife crossings effectiveness; and (4) the possibility to improve existing wildlife crossings. Those results will allow improving landscape defragmentation strategies
Ecological role of roadside stormwater ponds for amph
Roadside stormwater ponds (SWP) are found along roads to clean up roadway water before its release into the environment. Despite the pollution, these SWP are colonized by amphibians. In the Bas-Rhin (eastern France), a very modified landscape with few natural wetlands, amphibians reproduce in substitute sites such as SWP. During my PhD, I was interested in the use of SWP by Green frogs & Green toads. The results indicate that the SWP in the Bas-Rhin are ecological traps but only in the presence of a high density of tadpole predator leeches, and surprisingly not because of pollution. However, it is not pertinent to fence off these SWP to prevent amphibians from reaching them. Indeed, even if this PhD has demonstrated the effectiveness of different fences to prevent the amphibians to cross a road, it has also highlighted the relay role of SWP to landscape connectivity, avoiding the isolation of the studied populations. In highly modified landscapes, it is then preferable to improve the SWP by carrying out an appropriate management according to the amphibians
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
