    Fr. Anthony J. Gittins, C.S.Sp. [b. 1943] was ordained in 1967. He attended the University of Edinburgh from 1968-72 and received a doctorate in Social Anthropology in 1977. Fr. Gittins was a missionary to the Mende people in Sierra Leone from 1972-80. He went on to serve as a professor at the Missionary Institute and as Formation Director in London from 1980-84. He is the Emeritus Professor of Theology and Culture at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois, where he began teaching in 1984. Fr. Gittins has spent over thirty years ministering to homeless women and those leaving prostitution in Chicago, and is the author of several books.https://dsc.duq.edu/sohp/1000/thumbnail.jp

    Nobel Laureate Anthony J Leggett: A scientometric portrait

    This paper attempts to analyse the publication productivity of Anthony J. Leggett, the 2003 Nobel Prize winner in physics. His contributions peaked in 1987, 1994, and 1998 with 10 papers each. He had 194 publications during 1964 - 2004 in domains like Superfluid 3He (65), Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (36), Dissipative Quantum Systems (24), Atomic Alkali Gases (18), and Miscellaneous (51)which were analysed for authorship pattern with his 70 collaborators. Most active collaborators with Anthony J Leggett were: A. Garg with six papers and A. O. MCaldeira, D. M. Ginsberg, D. J. Vanharlingen , F. Sols, S.Takagi and D. A. Wollman with five papers each. His productivity coefficient was 0.60 which clearly indicates that his productivity increased after 50 percentile age. The highest degree of collaboration (1) for Anthony J. Leggett was found during 1964, 1971 and 1983. Journals have been the most preferred channel of communication, where as many as 139 papers out of 194 have been published. The core journals publishing his papers were: Phys. Rev. Leu. (42), Phys. Rev. B (9), J. Low Temp. Phys. (8),Phys. Rev. A (7), Ann. Phys. (6), Foundations of physics (6), J. Phys.(5), Prog.     Generating 3D product design models in real-time using hand motion and gesture

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Three dimensional product design models are widely used in conceptual design and in the early stage of prototyping during the design processes. A product design specification often demands a substantial amount of 3D models to be constructed within a short period of time. Current methods begin with designers sketching product concepts in 2D using pencil and paper, which in turn are then translated into 3D models by a design individual with CAD expertise, using a 3D modelling software package such as Pro Engineer, Solid Works, Auto CAD etc. Several novel methods have been used to incorporate hand motion as a way of interacting with computers. There are three main types of technology available to capture motion data, capable of translating human motion into numeric data which can be read by a computer system. The first being, hand gesture glove-based systems such as “Cyberglove”, these systems are generally used to capture hand gesture and joint angle information. The second is full body motion capture systems, optical and non-optical-based, and finally vision based gesture recognition systems which capture full degree of - freedom (DOF) hand motion estimation. There has yet to be a method using any of the above mentioned input devices to rapidly produce 3D product design models in real time, using hand motion and gestures. In this research, a novel method is presented, using a motion capture system to capture hand gestures and motion in real time, to recreate 3D curves and surfaces, which can be translated into 3D product design models. The main aim of this research is to develop a hand motion and gesture-based rapid 3D product modelling method, allowing designers to interactively sketch out 3D concepts in real time using a virtual workspace. A database of a number of hand signs was built for both architectural hand signs (preliminary study) and Product Design hand signs. A marker set model with a total of eight markers (five on the left hand and three on right hand/marker pen) was designed and used in the capture of hand gestures with the use of an Optical Motion Capture System. A preliminary testing session was successfully completed to determine whether the Motion Capture system would be suitable for a real-time application, by effectively modelling a train station in an offline state using hand motion and gesture. An OpenGL software application was programmed using C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Classes which was used to communicate and pass information of captured motion from the EVaRT system to the user

    Cutaneous Mechanoreceptor Feedback from the Hand and Foot Can Modulate Muscle Sympathetic Nerve Activity

    Stimulation of high threshold mechanical nociceptors on the skin can modulate efferent sympathetic outflow. Whether low threshold mechanoreceptors from glabrous skin are similarly capable of modulating autonomic outflow is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cutaneous afferent feedback from the hand palm and foot sole on efferent muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Fifteen healthy young participants (9 male; 25 ± 3 years [range: 22-29]) underwent microneurographic recording of multi-unit MSNA from the right fibular nerve during 2 minutes of baseline and 2 minutes of mechanical vibration (150Hz, 220μm peak-to-peak) applied to the left hand or foot. Each participant completed three trials of both hand and foot stimulation, each separated by 10 minutes. MSNA burst frequency decreased similarly during the two minutes of both hand (20.8 ± 8.9 vs. 19.3 ± 8.6 bursts/minute [ -8%], p=0.035) and foot (21.0 ± 8.3 vs. 19.5 ± 8.3 bursts/minute [ -8%], p=0.048) vibration but did not alter normalized mean burst amplitude or area (All p>0.05). Larger reductions in burst frequency were observed during the first 10 seconds (onset) of both hand (20.8 ± 8.9 vs. 17.0 ± 10.4 [ -25%], p<0.001) and foot (21.0 ± 8.3 vs. 18.3 ± 9.4 [ -16%], p=0.035) vibration, in parallel with decreases in normalized mean burst amplitude (hand: 0.45 ± 0.06 vs. 0.36 ± 0.14% [ -19%], p=0.03; foot: 0.47 ± 0.07 vs. 0.34 ± 0.19% [ -27%], p=0.02) and normalized mean burst area (hand: 0.42 ± 0.05 vs. 0.32 ± 0.12% [ -25%], p=0.003; foot: 0.47 ± 0.05 vs. 0.34 ± 0.16% [ -28%], p=0.01). These results demonstrate that tactile feedback from the hands and feet can influence efferent sympathetic outflow to skeletal muscle

    "Vivaldi's Four Seasons, or at least parts of it, can be recognised by enormous numbers of people on this planet, and its sounds seem to come from almost every elevator shaft, mobile phone, restaurant and television advert in the world. It stands as the very epitome of a globalized artwork, and therefore it would be reasonable to suppose that globalization theories would be a great help in explaining its success. That this may not be the case is one of the main points of this paper -�� but before we get to that, there are two matters that have to be set in place. The first is to define the characteristics of the Four Seasons as a global commodity (note that I refer to it in the singular, since the four individual pieces come as a package); the second is to describe the main tenets of globalization theories and some of their chief generating ideas.     Interactions between acute stress and financial decision-making

    Day-to-day decision-making is susceptible to various demands exerted by the environment. At times, such demands can lead to stressful conditions, affecting both psychological and physiological states. In order for researchers to understand how to control stressful conditions while making informed goal-oriented decisions, a necessary first step is to probe the interaction between the state created by exposure to acute stress and how decisions are performed under those conditions. To that end, the goal of this dissertation is to elucidate the effects of acute stress on decision-making at both the behavioral and neural levels. This will be accomplished by focusing on three aspects of the relationship between stress and decision-making. First, the question of how acute stress alters financial decisions during a financial decision-making task similar to those used in the fields of neuroeconomics will be addressed. The second will be an examination of whether or not the effects of acute stress generalize to other types of more automatized decision-making tasks -- in this case, a task involving instrumental conditioning.     The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in general and “Big data” in particular. Along with those who wield them, these can be seen as functioning together as a “mechanical muse” of sorts – surprisingly alluring – and, like a physical automaton can serve as a symbol – a microcosm – of what the MSTM sees (at the very least in practice) as the cosmic machine, our “final frontier”. And yet, individuals who unreflectively participate in these things – giving themselves over to them and seeking the powers afforded by the technology apart from technology’s rightful purposes – in fact yield to the same pragmatism and reductionism those wielding them are captive to. Thus, they ultimately nullify themselves philosophically, politically, and economically – their value increasingly being only the data concerning their persons, and its perceived usefulness. Likewise libraries, the time-honored place of, and symbol for, the intellectual flowering of the individual, will, insofar as they spurn the classical liberal arts (with the idea that things are intrinsically good, and in the case of humans, special as well) in favor of the alluring embrace of MSTM-driven “information technology” and Big data - unwittingly contribute to their irrelevance and demise as they find themselves increasingly less needed, valued, wanted. Likewise for the liberal arts as a whole, and in fact history itself, if the acid of a “science” untethered from what is, in fact, good (intrinsically), continues to gain strengt
