    These are the (extended) notes of a talk given by the author at the conference Algebraic Number Theory and Related Topics 2023, held at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University.     Negative emotion evoked by viewing snakes has a motivating effect on cognitive processing in human children with or without intellectual disability

    Background: It is well known that prioritization of the processing of threatening stimuli generally induces deleterious effects on task performance. However, a study recently reported that emotion (possibly fear) evoked by viewing images of snakes exerts a facilitating effect upon making judgments of the images' color in neurotypical adults and schoolchildren. Here, the author has attempted to confirm the relevance of this notion in children with and without intellectual disability. Methods: The author here compared the reaction time required to name the colors of snake and flower images between children with Down syndrome (DS) and mental age matched, typically-developing (TD) children. Results: Snake images were responded to faster than flower images in both the groups, while the children with DS tended to respond more slowly overall. Conclusions: As in TD children, negative emotion can have a motivating effect on cognitive processing in children with DS. Some implications of the findings are pointed out with respect to the lower-level task persistence as a characteristic motivational orientation in children with DS

    Experimental Studies on Assisted Circulation in Acute Hypoxic State

    Respiratory insufficiency arises from various causes. Treatment by mechanical ventilators is not always effective for it. When it arises, long term artificial pulmonary substitution is thought to be a reasonable approach to provide better results. However the best method for improving survival rate has not estadlished vet. Author studied hemodynamics in acute hypoxic state upon dogs weighing 9kg to 12kg. Secondary the hemodynamic effects and gas change capabilities of three methods of extracorporeal respiratory support which were venovenous, venoarterial and arteriovenous perfusion was studied in this state. In acute hypoxic state (PaO(2); 20-25mmHg), both left and right heart pressure rose and cardiac output increased at first which was called hypercirculatory state. Secondary, left heart pressure went down and cardiac output was decreased. However right heart pressure stayed high. Then the right heart peessure becawe low and the dogs died finally in average 63 minutes. Hypercirculatory state was early seen on venovenous and arteriovenous perfusion, and PaO(2) did not rise satisfactorily. On the other hand, hypercirculatory state was not seen on venoarterial perfusion, and PaO(2) rose satisfactory. Author concluded venoarterial perfusion was the best method for respiratory insufficiency cases which was not improved by mechanical ventilation

    Ma Chien-chung's Account of His Mission to India in 1881

    Ma Chien-chung 馬建忠 (1844-1900), the author of Ma-shih wen-t'ung 馬氏文通, a pioneer modern book of grammar, has been known as a capable administrator and negotiator in the service of Li Hung-chang 李鴻章, and also as a sophisticated French-trained reformist thinker. The collection of his writings, Shih-ko-chai chi-hsing 適可齋記言記行 (preface, 1896) contains eleven occasional memoranda or treatises dealing with such topics as economic policy, diplomatic service, naval training or modern railways, and five accounts of his missions as emissary, investigator or political agent. Perhaps the most remarkable of these latter five accounts is Nan-hsing chi 南行記, which is an account in the form of day-to-day journal of Ma's mission to India in 1881. Ma was sent to India by Li Hung-chang in order to obtain information on the opium question, especially the opium revenue system, and also to sound out the government of India on the possibility or practicability of gradually reducing and eventually terminating the opium trade to China by agreement. On his way to Simla, the summer capital of British India, and from Simla back to China, he visited Shanghai, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, Penang, Calcutta, Bombay, Poona, Colombo, and again Penang, Singapore, and Hong Kong. His travel account is valuable not only as material for the study of his official activities during the mission, but also as records of his observations on the Chinese and Westerners he met with and the places he visited. In particular, Ma's image of India as represented in the account might be of some interest to any student of Asian history. It shows how India as of 1881 was seen by an educated Chinese traveller, moreover by one who was vigorously engaged in government service and who knew both Europe and China. Ma Chien-chung had a travel companion in the young educated man named Wu Kuang-p'ei 吳廣霈 (1855-1919). Wu had studied the so-called yang-wu 洋務 and wanted to serve abroad as a diplomat or consul. This man also wrote a detailed journal of the journey, entitled Nan-hsing jih-chi 南行日記. While Ma's account is mainly concerned with the official side of the journey, Wu's journal describes cities and landscapes of the places visited and manners and customs of local inhabitants. It also records social contacts that Ma and he had with Chinese friends in Shanghai, Hong Kong or Singapore. Thus, by reading both and comparing them, we can have clearer understanding of the various aspects of this journey

    Neurodiversity and Artistic Performance Characteristic of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

    京都大学における論文不正に関する調査結果(https://www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ja/news/2021-10-15-0)により本文非公開(2021.12.7)。Neurodiversity refers to the notion that seemingly 'impaired' cognitive as well as emotional features characteristic of developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) fall into normal human behavioral variations that should enjoy some selective advantages. In the present experiment, the author compared what was depicted in subjects' drawings after they experienced an identical event, e.g., going on a picnic to a garden in the vicinity of their nursery school, between children with ASD and IQ-matched, typically developing (TD) children. When the material was coded according to types of drawn objects, such as human, animal, plant, food, vehicle, building, and others, the overall variability of the objects did not differ between TD children and children with ASD. However, TD children were more likely than children with ASD to depict human images. Conversely, other objects were more likely to be drawn by children with ASD than by TD children. While TD children were more likely to focus on humans than on non-human objects when drawing, children with ASD were more likely to focus on non-human objects than on humans even after both had experienced an identical event. The author argues that such findings are empirical evidence for the claim that there is some selective advantage of enhanced capabilities characteristic of ASD, i.e., neurodiversity, that may represent a balance toward "folk physics" at the expense of "folk psychology.

    Hardness measures for gridworld benchmarks and performance analysis of real-time heuristic search algorithms

    Gridworlds are one of the most popular settings used in benchmark problems for real-time heuristic search algorithms. However, no comprehensive studies have existed so far on how the difference in the density of randomly positioned obstacles affects the hardness of the problems. This paper presents two measures for characterizing the hardness of gridworld problems parameterized by obstacle ratio, and relates them to the performance of the algorithms. We empirically show that the peak locations of those measures and actual performance degradation of the basic algorithms (RTA* and LRTA*) almost coincide with each other for a wide variety of problem settings. Thus the measures uncover some interesting aspects of the gridworlds

    Monitoring intracellular degradation of exogenous DNA using diffusion properties

    Artificial nonviral gene vectors have the potential to improve the safety of gene therapy; however, such artificial vectors are less efficient for gene expression due to the existence of various barriers to delivery of exogenous DNAs to the nucleus in the living cell. Here we describe the degradation activities of cytoplasmic nucleases, which are involved as a barrier to efficient exogenous gene expression. The size and structure of degraded DNA were monitored by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy (FCCS) in solution and in the cytoplasm of living cells. Differences in degradation by endo- and exonucleases were confirmed by differences in the size and structure of DNA. Moreover, we confirmed the influence of the exonuclease degradation in cytoplasm on the expression rate of DNA transfection with a cationic lipid. Based on a comparison of in vitro and cell measurements, we conclude that cytoplasmic degradation by exonucleases can be a considerable barrier against efficient gene delivery
