The Welfare Nature in "Han Fei Zi"

P(論文)This paper investigates social welfare's ideas in oriental thought that have been until now overlooked in contemporary social welfare studies, focusing in particular on "Han Fei zi." The conventional ideology of Han Fei zi has been that law takes top priority, especially insisting on a policy of severe punishment and rejection of benevolence. It has been thought that the ideology or Han Fei zi is incompatible with that of contemporary welfare. However, as opposed to the long-standing views on Han Fei zi, in this paper it is shown that Han Fei zi realizes the importance of aiding the weak and that it possesses a system to help them as well as not to create them, and furthermore that the rigid application of law makes all of this possible. With this in mind, the Han Fei zi ideology appears to not contradict welfare ideology by any means. Rather, it appears to be quite similar to current social welfare ideology.departmental bulletin pape

In each item, the author first sets forth the original Han Fei Zi passages in question, cites the rele-vant annotations from other scholars, and then proceeds to discuss the issues at hand. The paper makes use of recently unearthed texts and other archaeological evidence to support new interpretations, or to bolster and/or revise the existing interpretations rendered by other scholars

Public and private interests in Han Fei: A statist approach

    No full text
Han Fei was a central figure in Chinese Legalism, which was a leading school of thought in the Warring States period of China, and which left a huge imprint on political culture in imperial China. This article examines the complex duality of public and private interests in Han Fei’s political thought, a crucial aspect of his thinking. I argue that Han Fei adopted a sophisticated statist approach to understanding public and private interests. For Han Fei, public interests are embodied in the state while private ones have dual functions. On the one hand, private interests threaten public ones by inviting corrupt material interests, personal morality, and knowledge, as well as human relationships. On the other hand, self-centered human psychology plays a dialectic role in strengthening the state

Impact of Forest Age and Forest Type on the Accuracy of Canopy Height Estimation by Synthetic Aperture Radar and Optical Imagery

    No full text
Forest canopy height measurement is critical for forest resources management, several remote sensing techniques have been applied to estimate the canopy height, including Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). However, the limited publicly available LiDAR data in British Columbia, limitation by clouds, and the cost create some challenges. To overcome this issue, this study employed publicly available Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 Optical Imagery data with the support vector machine (SVM) model to estimate the canopy height in areas with different forest characteristics in British Columbia, analyzed the influence of tree species composition and forest age on the accuracy of canopy height estimation derived by SAR compared to LiDAR. The result indicates that each study area contained different estimation accuracies, and the accuracy level is affected by forest age and forest type. Overall, the young conifer area obtained the highest accuracy, suggesting that the application of SAR data may rely on a broad range of different forest characteristics within the area. In addition, the integration of SAR data with optical imagery data significantly increases the estimation accuracy, demonstrating the importance of data fusion in remote sensing applications. This research showed the potential of combining SAR and optical imagery in estimating canopy height, encouraging further research on improving the accuracy of the canopy height estimation model

With the economy of China growing fast in early 21st century, there are more and more studies on Chinese-classics which has been developed more than two thousand years. Many current academics also study management thought in Chinese-classics. Some previous studies considered that Hanfeizi would be one of the classic in Chinese-management. At the same time, strategic management was first developed around 1950. It is a popular modern subject. This thesis is a study of strategic management on Hanfeizi. Hanfeizi was mainly written by Han Fei two thousand and three hundred years ago. This study reviewed history about Han Fei and literatures in strategic management. It defined 10 management strategies and analyzed the thought of Han Fei with these 10 preset strategies. It found out that there would be certainly some management strategies in Hanfeizi, and it named these strategies the “Han-Fei Strategies”. This study also discussed the practical applicability of the Han-Fei Strategies. We can find that Hanfeizi not only talked about a series of general management skills and ideas, but also implied strategic management thinking of the future developing orientation. With both the 10 strategies explained in this study and previous efforts on the massed studies of Chinese-management, it was proved that Chinese-culture is advanced in management and strategy theories.

Xunzi and Han Fei on Human Nature

It is commonly accepted that Han Fei studied under Xunzi sometime during the late third century BCE. However, there is surprisingly little dedicated to the in-depth study of the relationship between Xunzi’s ideas and one of his best-known followers. In this essay I argue that Han Fei’s notion of xing, commonly translated as human nature, was not only influenced by Xunzi but also that it is an important feature of his political philosophy

Does Han Fei have a conception of justice?

    No full text
Han Fei’s political theory is widely characterized as eschewing any connection with morality; so, can he have any conception of justice? In this paper, I accept the interpretation of Han Fei jettisoning any moral commitment, but I argue that he gives heed to an understanding of justice. This conception of justice arises naturally from the ordinary human sentiment of resentment for wrongs done and becomes a moral staple in the consciousness of ordinary people. Such a conception of justice has these features: all and only the guilty receive punishment, and the punishments are in some sense proportionate to the crime. Since disregarding this popular conception of justice results in resentment and political instability, Han Fei, without any moral commitment to it, accepts the popular conception of justice on prudential and consequentialist grounds

READING HAN FEI AS SOCIAL SCIENTIST : A CASE-STUDY IN HISTORICAL CORRESPONDENCE

Han Fei was one of the main proponents of Legalism in Qin-era China. Although his works are mostly read from a historic perspective, the aim of this paper is to advance an interpretation of Han Fei as a social scientist. The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship that study society and its institutions as a consequence of human behavior. Methodologically, social sciences combine abstract approaches in model-building with empiric investigations, seeking to prove the functioning of the models. In a third step, social sciences also aim at providing policy advice. Han Fei can be read as operating similarly. First, he builds a model of the nature of men, the state, and its interconnections, and then he uses history as empiric ground to prove his models. Again, after studying society as a raw fact, Han Fei develops models on how to deal with society. This article examines the social scientific inclinations of Han Fei by re-reading Chapter 49 of his book and applying an analysis in historical correspondence. This article serves as a case-study in this new type of analysis that can prove fruitful for the advancement of comparative philosophy
