Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Quality of provided care in vascular surgery : outcome assessment & improvement strategies

The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the quality of care in vascular surgery in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD): intermittent claudication (IC) and critical lower limb ischaemia (CLI) patients. Therefore firstly it focused on the improvement of the quality of perioperative patient management concerning: (1) a systematic review concerning all quality initiatives in vascular surgery was conducted, (2) an assessed of the implementation of established recommended SP measures in patients with PAOD was established and (3) an evaluation of the implementation of a new optimised care protocol (OCP) outlined in a multidisciplinary meeting was done. Then, it further focused mainly on AEs (registration, occurrence, consequences) of PAOD patients. A (1) determination of risk factors for adverse events (AE) occurrence by assessing three different health care facilities was assessed, (2) an evaluation of the occurrence of cardiac AE after primary lower extremity arterial revascularization (LEAR) for CLI in order to evaluate the impact of cardiac AEs on the clinical outcome was done and (3) a calculation of the average estimated total costs of AEs after treatment for PAOD was performed. Furthermore, the thesis focussed on the quality of life (QOL) of PAOD patients after primary LEAR, concerning (1) the role of social support on the outcome and (2) the improvement of functional status after primary LEAR.Astra Zeneca BV Bard Benelux BV B. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Stem cell therapy for cardiovascular disease : answering basic questions regarding cell behavior

Stem cell therapy has raised enthusiasm as a potential treatment for cardiovascular diseases. However, questions remain about the in vivo behavior of the cells after transplantation and the mechanism of action with which the cells could potentially alleviate disease symptoms. The objective of the research as described in this thesis was to visualize survival, proliferation, and migration of embryonic (ESC) and adult stem cells using non-invasive molecular imaging techniques in small animal models of cardiovascular diseases. The major findings can be described as follows: (1) Non-invasive bioluminescence imaging is a validated tool to monitor donor cell survival, proliferation, migration, and misbehavior; (2) ESC are a potential source for true regenerative therapy; (3) ESC form teratomas; (4) Adult stem cell survival is short-lived, but of all cells currently used in the clinic, mononuclear cells show the most prolonged survival; (5) Transplantation of mononuclear cells can preserve cardiac function in the short term after myocardial infarction in mice; (6) Compared to other measurements of murine cardiac function, Micro-CT is a superior method to assess cardiac geometry and function; and (7) Transplantation of mononuclear cells in peripheral artery disease is hampered by dismal cell survival and homing. These findings illustrate the current challenges for optimizing stem cell therapy for cardiovascular disease.Fulbright Foundation, VSB fund, Prof. Michaël-van Vloten Foundation, American Heart Association, Collegium Chirurgicum Neerlandicum, Netherlands Heart Foundation, J.E. Acute abdominal pain : considerations on diagnosis and management

In this thesis several aspects on the diagnosing and management of patients with acute abdominal pain are investigated. 1; The efficacy and safety of standard outpatient re-evaluation for patients not admitted to the hospital after emergency department evaluation for acute abdominal pain. 2; The use of a diagnostic strategy for patients clinically suspected to have appendicitis incorporating non-invasive modalities such as clinical evaluation, routine ultrasound and clinical re-evaluation, and a minimal use of complementary CT or laparoscopy. 3; The possibility to clinically differentiate between children with acute appendicitis and those with acute mesenteric lymphadenitis. 4; The value of secondary signs during the ultrasonographic evaluation of children with suspected appendicitis. 5; The impact of radiological imaging on diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision making for patients with acute colonic diverticulitis. 6; A systematic review on laparoscopic peritoneal lavage for patients with peritonitis due to perforated colonic diverticulitis.Biomet Nederland BV, Johnson & Johnson Medical BV, Medline International Netherlands BV, Covidien Nederland BV, Baxter BV, Emdamed BV, Erbe Nederland BV, Ikazia Ziekenhuis (Rotterdam), HagaZiekenhuis (Den Haag), KCI Medical BV, Medeco BV, Nycomed BV, Olympus Nederland BV, and Philips Healthcare - Ultrasound.UBL - phd migration 201

Imaging the scaphoid problem : a diagnostic strategy for suspected scaphoid fractures

In this thesis, the diagnostic value of bone scintigraphy in daily practice has been assessed. In addition, the results of bone scintigraphy have been compared with clinical outcome and the observer variation of bone scintigraphy has been established. Furthermore, the role of acute MR imaging in suspected scaphoid fractures and the observer variation of MR imaging have been determined. Finally, the function of the wrist and strength measurements have been assessed for their use in the diagnostic strategy of suspected scaphoid fractures The following conclusions have been established. Firstly, suspected scaphoid fractures are common and mandate further investigation. Secondly, function of the wrist and strength measurements improve the diagnostic strategy of suspected scaphoid fractures. Thirdly, MR imaging fails to identify up to 20% of scaphoid fractures. Fourthly, the observer variation of bone scintigraphy is less than the observer variation of MR imaging. Finally, bone scintigraphy in combination with clinical follow-up is the standard for suspected scaphoid fractures to date.Biomet Nederland BV DePuY a Johnson & Johnson company Endocare BV J.E.
