    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    The effects of implant topography on osseointegration under estrogen deficiency induced osteoporotic conditions: histomorphometric, transcriptional and ultrastructural analysis

    Compromised bone quality and/or healing in osteoporosis are recognised risk factors for impaired dental implant osseointegration. This study examined the effects of (1) experimentally induced osteoporosis on titanium implant osseointegration and (2) the effect of modified implant surface topography on osseointegration under osteoporosis-like conditions. Machined and micro-roughened surface implants were placed into the maxillary first molar root socket of 64 ovariectomised and sham-operated Sprague-Dawley rats. Subsequent histological and SEM observations showed tissue maturation on the micro-rough surfaced implants in ovariectomised animals as early as 3 days post-implantation. The degree of osseointegration was also significantly higher around the micro-rough implants in ovariectomised animals after 14 days of healing although by day 28, similar levels of osseointegration were found for all test groups. The micro-rough implants significantly increased the early (day 3) gene expression of alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand and dentin matrix protein 1 in implant adherent cells. By day 7, the expression of inflammatory genes decreased while the expression of the osteogenic markers increased further although there were few statistically significant differences between the micro-rough and machined surfaces. Osteocyte morphology was also affected by estrogen deficiency with the size of the cells being reduced in trabecular bone. In conclusion, estrogen deficiency induced osteoporotic conditions negatively influenced the early osseointegration of machined implants while micro-rough implants compensated for these deleterious effects by enhancing osteogenic cell differentiation on the implant surface

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Evaluation of Dental Implants Placed with Different Protocols in the Maxillary Aesthetic Region

    Single tooth implant placement in the anterior maxilla has been reported to achieve predictable survival rates. Implant supported single tooth restorations in the anterior maxilla are expected to mimic their natural counterparts in order to achieve aesthetic harmony. The overall success of an implant reconstruction in the anterior maxilla must not only consider implant survival and measures of implant success, such as peri-implant tissue health, but also achieve favourable aesthetic outcomes. This has led to the development of aesthetic indices for the evaluation of the peri-implant mucosa (Pink Esthetic Score – PES) and the implant supported crown (White Esthetic Score – WES). To meet the growing needs and expectations of patients for the completion of treatment in a shorter timeframe, implant placement has been modified from a conventional delayed placement approach to abbreviated placement protocols. Although these protocols reduce the total treatment time, their outcomes are nevertheless influenced by the dynamic bone remodelling changes that occur after tooth extraction. These ridge dimensional alterations could lead to compromised outcomes, especially in the anterior maxilla, where aesthetics is of prime importance.     The Effect of Titanium Dental Implants Surface Modification on the Macrophage Mediated Cell Response

    Titanium dental implants are currently one of the best treatment alternatives for replacing missing teeth. The direct bond that forms between the jawbone and titanium in a process defined as osseointegration has made titanium the material of choice for such devices. Whilst the underlying biological mechanisms responsible for the osseointegration process have not been fully elucidated, high demand by both patients and clinicians has driven the clinical application of titanium implants. Modification of the surface properties of titanium has been proven to be effective in promoting osseointegration, and thus understanding the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the clinically observed outcomes as a result of titanium surface modification is the focus of considerable research. Previous research in this field has, as expected, focused on osteoblasts as they are the bone forming cells. This however, ignores the possible fundamental role of early mediators of the healing process, such as platelets and macrophages, which may interact with the implant surface well ahead of osteoblasts.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
