A discontinuous Galerkin moving mesh method for Hamilton-Jacobi equations

    No full text
In this paper we consider the numerical solution of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations using the combination of a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method and an adaptive rr-refinement (mesh movement) strategy. Particular attention is given to the choice of an appropriate adaptivity criterion when the solution becomes discontinuous. Numerical examples in one and two dimensions are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive procedure

Self-archiving practice and the influence of publisher policies in the social sciences

    No full text
Authors in different disciplines exhibit very different behaviours on the so-called ‘green’ road to open access, i.e. self-archiving. This study looks at the self-archiving behaviour of authors publishing in leading journals in six social science disciplines. It tests the hypothesis that authors are self-archiving according to the norms of their respective disciplines rather than following self-archiving policies of publishers, and that, as a result, they are self-archiving significant numbers of publisher PDF versions. It finds significant levels of self-archiving, as well as significant self-archiving of the publisher PDF version, in all the disciplines investigated. Publishers’ self-archiving policies have no influence on author self-archiving practice

Aging, Gender and Neighbourhood Determinants of Distance Traveled: A Multilevel Analysis in the Hamilton CMA

    No full text
The objective of this study is to investigate the determinants of mean trip distance traveled by different mode types. The study uses data from the Hamilton CMA in Canada, and multilevel models to investigate demographic aging factors, gender differentials, and neighbourhood attributes on distance traveled. The results of the study validate previous findings regarding the decline in distance traveled as age advances. In addition, it is found that: 1) While this effect of age is present for all modes analyzed (car-driving, car-passenger, and bus) it is considerably more marked for car-driving; 2) There are significant gender effects compounded by the interrelated factors of employment constraints, household dynamics, and greater reliance on travel modes other than car driving; and 3) Neighbourhoods with high commercial and residential mix showed a negative relation with distance traveled only in the case of car-driver.distance traveled, aging, elderly, gender, neighbourhood influence, multilevel analysis

Lyman break galaxies and the star formation rate of the Universe at z ~ 6

    No full text
We determine the space density of UV-luminous starburst galaxies at z≈ 6 using deep HST ACS SDSS-i′ (F775W) and SDSS-z′ (F850LP) and VLT ISAAC J and Ks band imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South. We find eight galaxies and one star with (i′−z′) > 1.5 to a depth of z′AB= 25.6 (an 8σ detection in each of the 3 available ACS epochs). This corresponds to an unobscured star formation rate of ≈15 h−270 M⊙ yr−1 at z= 5.9, equivalent to L* for the Lyman-break population at z= 3–4 (ΩΛ= 0.7, ΩM= 0.3). We are sensitive to star-forming galaxies at 5.6 ≲z≲ 7.0 with an effective comoving volume of ≈1.8 × 105h−370 Mpc3 after accounting for incompleteness at the higher redshifts due to luminosity bias. This volume should encompass the primeval subgalactic-scale fragments of the progenitors of about a thousand L* galaxies at the current epoch. We determine a volume-averaged global star formation rate of (6.7 ± 2.7) × 10−4h70 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at z∼ 6 from rest-frame UV selected starbursts at the bright end of the luminosity function: this is a lower limit because of dust obscuration and galaxies below our sensitivity limit. This measurement shows that at z∼ 6 the star formation density at the bright end is a factor of ∼6 times less than that determined by Steidel et al. for a comparable sample of UV-selected galaxies at z= 3–4, and so extends our knowledge of the star formation history of the Universe to earlier times than previous work and into the epoch where reionization may have occurred

Infinite families of vertex-transitive graphs with prescribed Hamilton compression

    No full text
Given a graph XX with a Hamilton cycle CC, the {\em compression factor κ(X,C)\kappa(X,C) of CC} is the order of the largest cyclic subgroup of Aut(C)Aut(X)\operatorname{Aut}(C)\cap\operatorname{Aut}(X), and the {\em Hamilton compression κ(X)\kappa(X) of XX } is the maximum of κ(X,C)\kappa(X,C) where CC runs over all Hamilton cycles in XX. Generalizing the well-known open problem regarding the existence of vertex-transitive graphs without Hamilton paths/cycles, it was asked by Gregor, Merino and M\"utze in [``The Hamilton compression of highly symmetric graphs'', {\em arXiv preprint} arXiv: 2205.08126v1 (2022)] whether for every positive integer kk there exists infinitely many vertex-transitive graphs (Cayley graphs) with Hamilton compression equal to kk. Since an infinite family of Cayley graphs with Hamilton compression equal to 11 was given there, the question is completely resolved in this paper in the case of Cayley graphs with a construction of Cayley graphs of semidirect products ZpZk\mathbb{Z}_p\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_k where pp is a prime and k2k \geq 2 a divisor of p1p-1. Further, infinite families of non-Cayley vertex-transitive graphs with Hamilton compression equal to 11 are given. All of these graphs being metacirculants, some additional results on Hamilton compression of metacirculants of specific orders are also given.Comment: 11 page

WENO-Z scheme with new nonlinear weights for Hamilton-Jacobi equations and adaptive approximation

    No full text
summary:A new fifth-order weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) scheme is designed to approximate Hamilton-Jacobi equations. As employing a fifth-order linear approximation and three third-order ones on the same six-point stencil as before, a newly considered WENO-Z methodology is adapted to define nonlinear weights and the final WENO reconstruction results in a simple and clear convex combination. The scheme has formal fifth-order accuracy in smooth regions of the solution and nonoscillating behavior nearby singularities. A full account is given of the key role of parameters in WENO reconstruction and their selection. The latter half describes the adaptive stage on WENO approximation in convergence framework, which enables us to get the numerical solution to converge still achieving high-order accuracy for the nonconvex problems where the pure WENO scheme fails to converge. Detailed numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the ability of the proposed numerical methods

Long-term variations in fish assemblage, macrophyte community, and water quality in Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton Lake)

    No full text
Lake Rotoroa (37º48’S, 175º16’E) is a small, shallow, polymictic lake located on the western side of Hamilton City. The lake covers an area of 0.54 km2 with a mean depth of 2.4 m, catchment and riparian margins have been significantly modified into a suburban park-like setting. Due to its urban location and recreational value, exotic flora and fauna have been intentionally and unintentionally introduced. This has resulted in fluctuations in water quality and changes in phytoplankton, fish, and macrophyte assemblages over the past 60 years. The overall aim of this thesis is to summarise the fluctuations in water quality and macrophyte community of Lake Rotoroa associated with introduction of exotic species, and to develop a general understanding of the ecosystem response. This study involved collating and analysing available information on fish assemblages, macrophyte community, and water quality in Lake Rotoroa. Data from nine fish surveys undertaken between 1976 and 2012 has been combined. Water quality and macrophyte data was supplied by NIWA, who have undertaken monitoring for Hamilton City Council as part of the national lakes monitoring programme. Fishing methods have varied from gill, trap, and fyke netting between 1976 and 2001, with boat electrofishing surveys between 2003 and 2012. Lake Rotoroa has a relatively diverse freshwater fish fauna, comprising two native and six exotic fish species. The fish assemblage is now dominated by the native shortfin eel (Anguilla australis), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), brown bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus), and tench (Tinca tinca), with low densities of rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) and goldfish (Carassius auratus). Fish density and biomass have varied throughout the survey period, to some extent related to the environmental conditions and macrophyte cover. Macrophyte coverage and water quality have undergone considerable changes in the last 30 years, with the collapses of macrophytes stimulating decreases in water quality and increased perch abundance. In 1990, the macrophyte community collapsed with an associated release of nutrients into the water column, causing the lake to become supertrophic. Between 1992 and 2010, water quality improved, with a decrease phosphorus concentrations that apparently limited phytoplankton biomass and improved water clarity. This allowed macrophytes to recolonise the lake to 30% lake bed coverage in 2005 and a consequent improvement from supertrophic to a eutrophic state. Since 2009, the macrophyte community has undergone another collapse, with only a few clumps of native charophytes and Egeria densa present in 2011. The reduction of macrophytes has been accompanied by a decrease in water clarity. The collapse has been attributed to disturbance by grazing from the herbivorous rudd and foraging benthic feeding fish, although other stresses such as decreased water clarity and microcystins may also have had an influence. Further research is needed on the selectivity between passive and active fish capture methods used to allow accurate comparisons between the two methods. This will allow for density and biomass estimates to be made for the passive fishing methods previously used and allow greater insight into changes in abundance of fish populations in Lake Rotoroa

On Hamilton paths in vertex-transitive graphs of order 10p10p

It was shown by Kutnar, Maru\v si\v c and Zhang in 2012 that every connected vertex-transitive graph of order 10p10p, where pp is a prime and p7p\ne 7, contains a Hamilton path, except for graphs XX arising from the action of PSL(2,sm)(2, s^m) on cosets of ZsmZsm110\mathbb{Z}_s^m\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{\frac{s^m-1}{10}}, where ss is a prime. In this paper, Hamilton cycles of these exceptions XX will be found.arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2409.0613

Neutron cross sections for He-3 at epithermal energies

High accuracy, absolute measurements of the neutron total cross section for He-3 are reported for incident neutron energies 0.1-400 eV. The measurements were performed at the LANSCE short-pulse neutron spallation source. Using the previously determined cross section for neutron elastic scattering, 3.367+/-0.019 b, we extract a new value for the energy dependence of the He-3(n,p)He-3 reaction cross section, sigma(np)=(849.77+/-0.14+/-1.02)E-1/2-(1.253+/-0.00+/-(+0.008)(-0.049))b, where the neutron energy is expressed in eV.
