Sultan Abdul Hamid II bertemu Habib Abd al-Rahman?

    No full text

    Get PDF
Al-Mujādalah is one of the messengers' preaching methods. It means debating, discussing or exchanging arguments and opinions. The reality now indicates that many Muslims generally do not understand the demands of arguing well, and in fact some preachers also fail to handle certain situations properly, at times being too emotional and merely thinking of trying to kill off his opponent’s argument to win the mujādalah. It seems pursuing the mujādalah with good and effective rhetoric has become an increasingly forgotten requirement of today's preachers. As a result, a perfect and beautiful Islam looks bad and ugly to the world. As a community that promotes Islam, the daie should ensure that whatever they present in the name of Islam corresponds to religious values, so that Islam can be seen in its truest beautiful form for all to witness. This study entitled 'The Rhetoric of Al-Mujādalah In Da'wah: Study of the Tale of Prophet Ibrahim a.s. in the al-Qur'an' is a documentary study of Prophet Ibrahim a.s. which presents his mujādalah rhetoric covering all levels of society, as laid out in the al-Quran. The study is undertaken to realise three main objectives: first, to study the concept of al-mujādalah in preaching activities through the Quranic perspective, second, to identify the preaching methods and al-mujādalah approaches employed by Prophet Ibrahim a.s. when he preached, as stated in the al-Quran, and third, to analyse the al-mujādalah rhetoric employed by Prophet Ibrahim a.s. based on verses of the al-Quran. The study was undertaken using data gathered through library searches and qualitative data analysis as the main methods of study, besides using inductive and deductive methods as support. The resulting information are based on the Al-Quran, and references to 33 venerated books on tafsir containing various statements on the al-mujādalah rhetorics of Prophet Ibrahim a.s. The main outcome of the study is the presentation of a guide to having debates and dialogues with effective rhetoric based on the al-Quran. It is suitable as a reference for all parties who are involved in al-mujādalah, and also as a reference for institutions of higher learning, organisations, NGOs and preachers in general. May the result of this study be of benefit to all parties and help to preserve the beauty of our religion, the harmony of our life and the well-being of Muslims in particular, and of the whole human race in general

Monetary thought of the sixteenth century muslim scholars

    Get PDF
Muslim scholars of the sixteenth century continued the tradition of writing on economic issues. Their work, however is characterized by the period's overall feature of imitation and repetition and thus reflects hardly any advancement of monetary thought since the works of earlier Muslim scholars. This is clearly reflected in the two representative treatises on money: those of al-Suyuti (d. 1506) written at the beginning of the century, and al-Tumurtashi (d. 1598), written at its the end. History of Islamic economic thought is a well-researched area of Islamic Economics. To the best of our knowledge, however, all such research stopped at the end of the fifteenth century – the age of Ibn Khaldun and al-Maqrizi. The present paper seeks to advance this research and intends to investigate monetary thought of Muslim scholars during the sixteenth century (corresponding to tenth century Hijrah, exactly from 906 AH to 1009 AH). Beginning with an overview of earlier monetary thought in Islam to provide background information, then it goes on to note that particular century's monetary problems in order to provide a perspective for the discussion of monetary thought among Muslim scholars. For the purpose of comparison, European monetary thought of the same period is also analyzed.Monetary thought; Quantity theory of money;Sixteenth century Monetary Thought; al-Suyuti; al-Tumurtashi.

Comparison of Tooth Size Discrepancy of Three Main Ethnics in Malaysia with Bolton's Ratio

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of Bolton's ratios in orthodontic population of Malaysian main ethnics; Malay, Chinese and Indians. Ninety convenient samples consisting of 30 pre-orthodontic study casts from each ethnic that fits the inclusion criteria were selected. The greatest mesiodistal widths of each tooth from six to six for overall ratio and three to three for anterior ratio were measured using a digital callipers linked to Hamilton Arch Tooth System software to the nearest 0.01mm. Means of the ratios were calculated using Bolton analysis. One sample t-test statistic analysis was carried out to compare the means with Bolton values of anterior ratio and overall ratio and one-way ANOVA was used to analyze comparison between ethnic groups of the anterior ratio and the overall ratio with the level of statistical significance set at p < 0.05. However, there were no significant differences when comparing Bolton values with Chinese and Indian anterior and overall ratios. The Bolton standards could be applied to Malaysian Chinese, Indians and Malay's female. Subsequently, a specific standard should be used for the Malays orthodontic population.Article URL : http://www.ukm.my/jsm/pdf_files/SM-PDF-41-2-2012/17%20Aida%20Nur%20Ashikin.pd

Conflict of law and the methodology of Tarjīẖ : a study in Islamic legal theory

    No full text
Islamic law never achieved unity but expressed itself in, at least, four surviving schools. More interestingly, contemporary Muslim communities are still divided among themselves on a number of issues related to their laws. This work describes how problem of legal conflicts have been tackled by Muslim jurists. It is an attempt to examine closely the phenomenon of conflict in Islamic law from the standpoint of usūl-al-fiqh or Islamic legal theory. In fact, much is heard nowadays of the contradiction in the body of Islamic law. Whilst in contrast, little is presented in terms of the methodology of removing this conflict. The present work therefore, attempts to redress this balance. The emphasis of the work will be concerned primarily with tarjīh methodology ; how to give preference to one piece of evidence or argument over the other when they conflict. Nevertheless, considerable concern is given to investigating the background to the conflict of law in the Shari'ah. This study of a neglected area in Islamic legal scholarship will be an important source of reference to students, both practising and theoretical jurists or to anyone who merely wishes to increase his knowledge of legal themes, particularly legal conflict. The very aim of the work is to argue that conflict is a natural and unavoidable consequence of legal study because legal conflict is only conflicting principles and arguments adduced by both the classical and modern jurists to reach what is actually intended by God in the target case. Therefore, conflicts are inevitable in most of the cases in fiqh owing to the variety of principles set out to deal with one piece of legal evidence, let alone with all the pieces of legal evidence in question. Tarjīh is therefore, an important and workable instrument in the re-examination of these conflicts and in arriving at the most accurate principle for establishing the law for as long as this is possible. It is hoped that the discovery of new facts and the increase of knowledge which results from the broadening and deepening of the research will positively contribute to the process of unification of Islamic law

Factor structure of Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARs): EFA and CFA using Malaysian undergraduate psychology students

    No full text
Statistics courses are very important for social science students in understanding and analyzing research. Many students felt that statistics course is not applicable for undergraduate study except for pursuing postgraduate degrees. A study conducted in a Malaysian university found a negative relationship between anxiety and academic performance (Abd Hamid HS, Sulaiman MK, Int J Behav Sci 9(1):55–66, 2014a). However, the factor structure of the anxiety measure (STARs) had not been examined for Malaysian sample. This paper seeks to examine the factor structure of STARs which was reported to have six factors (Worth of Statistics, Interpretation Anxiety, Test and Class Anxiety, Computational Self-concept, Fear of Asking for Help, and Fear of Statistics Teachers) measured by 51 items. The scale was distributed to 132 undergraduate psychology students (26 males, 106 females) who took Psychological Statistics course. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed using SPSS and in AMOS respectively. The resulting model comprises five factors with 27 items. The six factors were not successfully replicated in the Malaysian sample; notably, the Interpretation Anxiety is missing. The findings are discussed in relation to the factor structure of another measure (Statistical Anxiety Scale) which was also tested in a Malaysian Sample (Abd Hamid HS, Sulaiman MK, Statistics anxiety, basic mathematics skills and academic performance among undergraduate psychology students.
