Variation in the perception of an L2 contrast : a combined phonetic and phonological account

    No full text
The present study argues that variation across listeners in the perception of a non-native contrast is due to two factors: the listener-specic weighting of auditory dimensions and the listener-specic construction of new segmental representations. The interaction of both factors is shown to take place in the perception grammar, which can be modelled within an OT framework. These points are illustrated with the acquisition of the Dutch three-member labiodental contrast [V v f] by German learners of Dutch, focussing on four types of learners from the perception study by Hamann and Sennema (2005a)

Modelling the formation of phonotactic restrictions across the mental lexicon

    No full text
Experimental data shows that adult learners of an artificial language with a phonotactic restriction learned this restriction better when being trained on word types (e.g. when they were presented with 80 different words twice each) than when being trained on word tokens (e.g. when presented with 40 different words four times each) (Hamann & Ernestus submitted). These findings support Pierrehumbert’s (2003) observation that phonotactic co-occurrence restrictions are formed across lexical entries, since only lexical levels of representation can be sensitive to type frequencies

Johann Georg Hamann - the Nordic magician

G. Hamann has been one of the Pleiades among the intellectuals of the XIII century Konigsberg, a friend of Kant and a critic of the enlightenment movement, famous for his protestant Christian understanding of the relation between God and man. No the basis of a misunderstood theses of Socrates, that reason is not able to know, he underlines the possibility to understand the world and oneself through the appearance of God in Christ and His humiliation down to human understanding in the Word of the Bible. Though Hamann recognizes experience through senses and reason as preconditions for the knowledge or the world and ones self, this seems to be insufficient for the full understanding, because man is bound to God and the world in the full sense of his existence and this means also through emotion, especially Herder, Goethe and Schiller, was due to his holistic understanding of mans existence, by which the self-expression of the ordinary people and peoples that enabled the formation of national identities and states. Thus Hamann became also important for the Lithuanian national liberation movement

Lack of Credibility, Inflation Persistence and Disinflation in Colombia

    No full text
This paper measures inflation persistence in Colombia for the period1990-2010 and estimates the implied speed at which agents learn about the central bank´s inflation target. We estimate Erceg and Levin´s (2003) imperfect credibility model using Bayesian techniques and compare the posterior odds of this model against a conventional Neokeynesian model with ad-hoc price indexation. The odds are strongly in favor of the imperfect credibility model, suggesting that lack of credibility on the inflation target is an important source of inflation persistence. We use the model to compute the sacrifice ratio associated to 100 basis points inflation target shocks and find that it is (0.83%) in line with previous estimates for Colombia. We also find that the speed at which agents learn in the model has increased, albeit marginally, since the central bank implemented its inflation targeting strategy. Although during this period macroeconomic volatility has fallen, inflation persistence has remained roughly constant suggesting that, so far, the impact of those credibility gains on inflation persistence has been modest.Credibility, inflation, persistence, disinflation costs,Colombia.

    Aid Volatility: An Empirical Assessment

    No full text
This article examines empirical evidence on the volatility and uncertainty of aid flows and their main policy implications. Aid is found to be more volatile than fiscal revenues--particularly in highly aid-dependent countries--and shortfalls in aid and domestic revenue tend to coincide. The article also finds that uncertainty about aid disbursements is large and that the information content of commitments made by donors is either very small or statistically insignificant. Specific policies and broader international efforts to cope with these features of aid are briefly discussed. Copyright 2003, International Monetary Fund

    Coefficient Fields in Tensor Products

    No full text
Let L>=K be fields of characteristic p /= 0 such that Lpe <= K for some positive integer e. Let M be an inbetween field of K and L and f the canonical K-homo-morphism of the tensor product L ⊗ M over K onto the field composite LM = L. The purpose of this thesis is to study the existence of 1 ⊗ M-coefficient fields of L ⊗ M.ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio
