Contemporary democracies face a significant crisis of trust in institutions, political representation, and decision-making processes. In response, deliberative innovations have developed, with citizens’ assemblies standing out as a form of participation that allows randomly selected citizens to influence public policy directly through informed and structured dialogue. This paper examines the communicative aspect of citizens’ assemblies through a case study of the pilot project conducted in Varaždin in 2024/2025. The methodological approach uses a qualitative case study, combining document analysis, discourse, and rhetorical analysis of deliberations, and media coverage of the project. The findings indicate that internal communication within the assembly was facilitative, inclusive, and debate- based, fostering a stronger sense of political relevance among participants. External communication, though transparent, was mainly represented in the media as affirmative and informational, without critical reflection or the inclusion of diverse viewpoints. This underscores the media’s role in legitimizing the process but also reveals their limited capacity to promote a deliberative public sphere. In conclusion, the Varaždin case demonstrates that deliberative models can help strengthen local democracy and enhance trust in institutions; however, their longterm success depends on clear political backing, institutional integration, and strategic communication that supports pluralism and sustained visibility

Vatikanski koncil i Evangelii Nuntiandi. U središnjem dijelu rada metodama analize i sinteze obrađen je pojam, značaj i značenje nove evangelizacije, djelovanje fra Bone Šagija te su predstavljeni rezultati provedenog empirijskog istraživanja o suvremenom značenju nove evangelizacije među 75 pripadnika vjerske zajednice i vjernika župa sv. Nikole biskupa i sv. The paper in the field of communication sciences thematizes the communicative significance and meaning of the term “new evangelization” in the context of the work of Fr. Bono Zvonimir Šagi, who for decades carried out the new evangelization in the parish of St. Vid in Varaždin, lectures in philosophy and theology at the Institute for Christian Spirituality at the KBF in Zagreb and as the editor-in-chief of "Kršćanska Sadašnjost". In the introduction, II. Vatican Council and Evangelii Nuntiandi was thematized. In the main part of the paper: concept, significance and meaning of the new evangelization, work of Fr. Bono Šagi and the conducted empirical research on the contemporary meaning of the new evangelization among 75 members of the religious community and believers of the parishes of Sts. Nicholas the Bishop and St. Vid in Varaždin with the aim of researching the significance of the new evangelization, ie the familiarity of the term itself. Hypothesis H1 was also posed: Most believers and members of the religious community are familiar with the concept and contemporary communicative significance of the new evangelization. In the final part, results of the research are discussed and conclusion is presented. In addition to empirical research, scientific methods of analysis and synthesisand description were used. At the descriptive level, information describing the phenomenon is presented, and at the thematic level collected data are grouped by topics, and the analytical level is the core of qualitative research. Within the analytical level, categories are created that arise from the interpretation of the meaning of analyzed data (Richards, 2015: 109-113). The work is a kind of homage to the character and work of Fr. Bono Zvonimir Šagi, who left a deep mark to the lives of inhabitants of the city of Varaždin, regardless of whether or not they are believers

The PhD thesis deals with semiotic aspects of tattoos of Catholic women in BiH, the function of traditional tattoos from the identity- religious communication aspect, primarily as a means of visual communication and the modern communicative meaning of traditional tattoos. From the original protective function, through the traditional customary form to the form of identity identification, the tattoo of Catholic women in BiH throughout history has not changed its appearance but function conditioned by political, social, social and cultural changes, and thus meaning. Tattooing of women in BiH is a phenomenon more than a thousand years old, and dates back to the time of the ancient Illyrian tribes that lived in the Balkans (Stipčević, 1974: 80). The traditional tattooing of women was of the greatest importance during the Turkish occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1463 and 1878, since the tattooing of the cross as a symbol of Christianity, in addition to its primary protective function (prevention of abduction and rape by the Turks), also had the function of witnessing to religion / Catholicism. Geographically, the custom of tattooing women was most widespread among Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in central Bosnia and western Herzegovina, and much less in the Dalmatian hinterland in the Republic of Croatia. The phenomenon was extensively researched at the end of the 19th century by historian Ćiro Truhelka and the English traveller Mary Edith Durham. Researchers have recorded 317 motifs that occur singly or in combination with other motifs, and the basis is the sign of the cross. Tattooing of Catholic women is an important ethnological unit in the cultural and historical understanding of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole, but it is an indisputable fact that tattooing of Catholic women, especially in central Bosnia is ethnologically specific, a rarity, unique throughout the world. Since the communicative meaning has changed during the centuries-old history of traditional tattooing, the PhD thesis researches its contemporary communicational meaning and semiotic aspects on four levels. The aim of the research is to contribute to the preservation and popularization of the phenomenon of Croatian traditional cultural heritage and in a scientific sense to expand existing and give some new knowledge about this unique phenomenon. Keywords: tattoo, tradition, Croats, Bosnia and Herzegovina, semiotics, nonverbal communicational meaning The topics of the PhD thesis are the semiotic aspects and the communicative meaning of the phenomenon of traditional tattooing. It primarily covers the field of social sciences, the field of information and communication sciences, and the marginal interdisciplinary field of humanitie

The paper stems from a doctoral dissertation, providing an in-depth exploration of the theoretical discourse surrounding traditional tattoos of Catholic women from Bosnia and Herzegovina, firmly rooted in the social sciences, particularly communication sciences, and the interdisciplinary field of humanities due to the multifaceted nature of the phenomenon. This study is based on qualitative research that thoroughly examines the theoretical discourse of traditional tattoos as an ethnological phenomenon. It rigorously employs comparison and description to scrutinize the applicability of relevant communication theories to traditional tattoos and to delineate common features or differences. This original research undeniably advances our understanding of traditional tattoos as a non-verbal communication medium, substantially contributing to the scientific understanding of traditional tattoos among Catholic women from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, this research definitively extends co-cultural communication theory to encompass relational co-cultural communication theorizing

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
