Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Water quality and fish habitat assessment of rivers in Johor (Sungai Dengar, Sungai Tui, and Sungai Mengkibol)
Implementation of river rehabilitation programs are due to the apprehension expressed by local community and other stakeholders over the degradation of river and loss of livelihood from fishing and other natural resource-based activities. Usually, river rehabilitation involves works on water quality improvement and landscape enhancement rather than provides essential habitat for aquatic life especially fish. Consequently, this study is carried out in order to reveal the correlation between habitats and fish species towards improving the river rehabilitation efforts. Sungai Dengar near Gunung Belumut, Kluang, Sungai Tui in Bukit Kepong and Sungai Mengkibol in Kluang Town are three rivers that have been chosen for the purpose of the study as the rivers have different landuse and physical conditions. Sungai Dengar which is located in palm oil plantation and recorded as Class II of WQI, exhibits lowers composition of fish species compared to Sungai Tui. However it comprises two species which are not present in the other two rivers; Julong and Bujuk. Nevertheless, Sungai Tui, even though classified under Class III of WQI, exhibits a rich and diverse fish species composition with high economical value species such as Baung akar and Ketutu. Sungai Mengkibol of Class IV is dominated by hardy and tolerant species such as Bandaraya and Tilapia hitam. This study discovers that bankside vegetation, channel units, river size, migratory species and large woody debris are considered as the influential factors in shaping fish species community. Road Traffic Noise Levels at Different Types of Residential Areas in Nibong Tebal, Penang
Traffic vehicles on the road networks during their movement create noise that has greater impact on environment. The sources, the receivers and the place of transition, where the sound wave propagates, are the three vital parameters for the field of noise acoustics. For this research, the aim of this study is to assess traffic noise levels between different types of residential areas in Nibong Tebal, Penang. The study is carried out in order to achieve the following three main objectives, which are to assess the level of traffic noise at selected residential areas, to characterize the traffic flow composition nearby study areas, and to compare noise levels between low density and terraced house residential areas. The noise levels measurements were carried out periodically in the morning (from 0700 to 1100), evening (from 1600 to 1900), and at night (from 2200 to 2300) for 15 minutes using a sound level meter. The traffic characteristics were measured simultaneously during noise levels measurements. The highest equivalent continuous noise levelsfor the low density residential areas was at Kampung Batu 2 in the evening with 65.9 dB(A), while for the medium density residential areas, Taman Sri Acheh contributed 68.60 dB(A) during the morning. The lowest equivalent continuous noise levelswere obtained at Kampung Simpang Tiga in the morning that contributed 54.9 dB(A) for low density residential areas. However, the minimum equivalent continuous noise levelsobtained for the medium density residential areas was at Taman Ilmu Indah in the morning with 63.10 dB(A). The results obtained, clearly show that the equivalent continuous noise level for all study sites exceeded the maximum permissible sound level for medium density areas during daytime (from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm), which is 55 dB(A), while at night time (from 10.00 pm to 7.00 am) Â is 45 dB(A), and for low density residential areas during daytime (from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm) is 55 dB(A), while at night time (from 10.00 pm to 7.00 am)Â is 45 dB(A), respectively. These values are based on the guidelines for environmental noise limits and control by the Department of Environment, Malaysia
Effectiveness of noise barriers at residential areas in Klang Valley, Malaysia
The use of environmental noise barrier has increased as concerns of side effects of noise pollution in the environment grow. However, a lot of complaints from the residents occur after the installation of the noise barrier regarding its effectiveness. Thus, this study is carried out to determine the effectiveness of existing noise barriers such as vegetation, concrete hollow block, and panel concrete. This study is designed to evaluate the influence of source of noise (traffic composition) as well as meteorological condition towards level of noise at study sites with and without the presence of noise barrier. The results of the study reveals that LAeq in all study sites throughout all measurement periods recorded 61.9 dB(A) to 74.8 dB(A) during daytime (morning, afternoon, and evening) and 57.6 dB(A) to 73.2 dB(A) during night time. These results exceed the noise limit in Malaysia guidelines (daytime = 60 dB(A) and night time = 50 dB(A)). Results of PCA show the percentages of the total variance up to 95% by variables of traffic composition such as car, motorcycles, and light lorries. Apart from that, panel concrete noise barrier meet the minimum value of effective noise barrier insertion loss. The concrete hollow block partially meet the minimum value of effective noise barrier with computed insertion loss, while vegetation does not provide enough insertion loss of effective noise barrier. Therefore, the finding indicates that panel concrete provides consistent insertion loss followed by concrete hollow block and vegetation. The MLR model based on the traffic characteristics group exhibited optimal performance in term of coefficient of determination for with and without noise barrier location with values of 0.858 and 0.839, respectively
Comparison of Road Traffic Noise near High, Medium and Low Density Residential Areas in Nibong Tebal and Juru, Penang
Nowadays, environmental noise pollution is ranked second among other environmental pollutions in terms of public health impacts due to rapid urbanization and growing traffic especially road traffic. The aim of this study is to assess traffic noise levels between different types of residential areas in Nibong Tebal and Juru, Penang. This study compares road traffic noise levels in high density (Juru) and medium density (Nibong Tebal) residential areas in Penang. The noise levels measurements were carried out periodically in the morning (from 0700 to 1100), evening (from 1600 to 1900), and at night (from 2200 to 2300) for 15 minutes using sound level meter. The traffic characteristics were measured simultaneously during noise levels measurements. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine any significant differences between two or more noise levels measured at sites of the study. Independent samples t-test was used to compare independent groups (noise levels at two different study sites and areas). In the present study, p values of less than 5% (p<0.005) were considered as statistically significant The results show that all of the noise levels measured in Juru and Nibong Tebal residential areas exceed the noise permissible limits stated in The Planning Guidelines For Environmental Noise Limits and Noise Control by low density residential areas with the permissible limits of 50dB(A) day time and 40dB(A) night time, suburban residential (medium density with the permissible limits of 55dB(A) day time and 45dB(A) night time) and urban residential (high density with the permissible limits of  60dB(A) day time and 55dB(A) night time). The equivalent continuous noise levels measured in Nibong Tebal residential areas are between 57.6 – 69dB(A) while in Juru residential areas, the noise levels measured are 66.65 to 70.7dB(A). All noise levels exceed the maximum permissible sound levels in both areas
