No full textThis photograph is of 32-year-old Anna Marie Hahn (widely-known as Arsenic Annie and the Blonde Borgia), the first of only three women executed via the electric chair in Ohio. Hahn is believed to have poisoned five elderly individuals, beginning in 1933. She was convicted of murder in the death of Jacob Wagner in 1937. Caption reads: "No. 214, Mrs. Anna Marie Hahn, of Hamilton County, Legally Electrocuted December 7th, 1938, for the Murder of Mr. Jacob Wagner, at Cincinnati, Ohio."
In 1885, the Ohio Penitentiary became the site of all executions for prisoners on death row; formerly, executions had taken place in the county where the crime was committed. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. A total of 315 individuals were executed in "Old Sparky.

In 1816 Buffon's desciple, B.G.E. de la Ville-sur-Illon, comte de Lacepède (1756-1825), prepared a lengthy autobiographical note for his cousin the Princess of Hesse-Philipsthal. The manuscript was recently located in Brussels and is printed with notes. It describes Lacepède 's noble background and youth in Agen ; cultural life in a provincial town ; his education, and musical, literary and scientific activities ; his meetings with Buffon, Daubenton, Gluck, Gossec, Franklin, Voltaire, Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and other notables ; his writings as a naturalist of the Jardin du Roi ; his political activities during the Revolution and under Napoleon ; his stewardship of the Légion d'Honneur ; and his conduct during the period 1814-1815.Hahn Roger. No full textOn this month's episode I discuss the recent book Beyond Unwanted Sound: Noise, Affect and Aesthetic Moralism with its author, Marie Thompson. We discuss different conceptions of 'noise', as anti-music or the cacophony of industrial society, competing theories of noise and Marie's powerful argument that noise is neither inherently bothersome nor transgressive. We end by discussing some of the musicians and sound artists that Marie argues transcend the dominant morality by which noise is related to.</p
