Effect of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea on the fatality, recovery of fertile period and breeding record in C57BL/6J mice

N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) is a potent mutagen in a mouse model by inducing point mutation in a random manner and, in particular, causing heritable base substitutions in spermatogonia. In this study, systematic development of phenotype-driven mutant mice with large scale was carried out by using ENU. Nine-week-old male mice of C57BL/6J received intraperitoneal injection at three times with 100 mg/kg of ENU at weekly intervals for three weeks. After injections with ENU, the changes of body weight, fatality, recovery of fertile period, and breeding record were measured in these mice. Body weight lost as a result of ENU treatments was reversed after the last ENU injection. Live fertile male mice recovered from infertility from 104 to 165 days after ENU treatments were mated with C57BL/6J female mice for generation of G1 offspring. An average birth rate was 5.9 mice from 1 pair of paternal and maternal mice. All of 231 G1 offspring mice were analyzed by modified-SHIRPA with standard procedure at nine weeks of age. Among G1 mice, 166 mice were identified as mutagenic phenotypes in 20 test items. The changes in mutagenic phenotypes after ENU treatments, for instance, pattern in the region with a different color, touch escape, changes in head morphology, pupil, and teeth, and negative geotaxis etc., were found in these mice. Taken together, these results indicate that ENU may be a trans-generational mutagen in C57BL/6J mice.open

A multi-scale non-deterministic approach to composite curing process simulation

    No full text
Thermosetting matrix composite materials are often subject to a curing process to enhance the mechanical properties of the final product. In recent years computational models of the curing process allowed for a remarkable time and cost compression with respect to trial and error procedures. Most of the proposed models, however, rely on deterministic hypothesis. In this paper a multi-scale non deterministic approach to cure process simulation has been proposed, evidencing the effect of stochastic perturbations of fibers distribution on simulative results on macro-scale

Mechanical Characterization of AA2024-T3 FSWed Butt Joints

In recent years friction stir welding process has received a great deal of attention from the transport industry. During the process, heat generation and material stirring induce significant microstructural alteration in the base material, affecting the properties of the welded assembly. In this paper the influence of process parameters, namely rotating speed and welding speed, on mechanical properties of AA2024-T3 friction stir butt welds is experimentally investigated. An increase of the yield stress has been found decreasing the heat input, while an opposite variation was measured for the elongation

Some effective techniques for naive Bayes text classification

    No full text
While naive Bayes is quite effective in various data mining tasks, it shows a disappointing result in the automatic text classification problem. Based on the observation of naive Bayes for the natural language text, we found a serious problem in the parameter estimation process, which causes poor results in text classification domain. In this paper, we propose two empirical heuristics: per-document text normalization and feature weighting method. While these are somewhat ad hoc methods, our proposed naive Bayes text classifier performs very well in the standard benchmark collections, competing with state-of-the-art text classifiers based on a highly complex learning method such as SVM.This work was partly supported by the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and the Okumura Group at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Improving query translation in English-Korean cross-language information retrieval

    No full text
Query translation is a viable method for cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), but it suffers from translation ambiguities caused by multiple translations of individual query terms. Previous research has employed various methods for disambiguation, including the method of selecting an individual target query term from multiple candidates by comparing their statistical associations with the candidate translations of other query terms. This paper proposes a new method where we examine all combinations of target query term translations corresponding to the source query terms, instead of looking at the candidates for each query term and selecting the best one at a time. The goodness value for a combination of target query terms is computed based on the association value between each pair of the terms in the combination. We tested our method using the NTCIR-3 English-Korean CLIR test collection. The results show some improvements regardless of the association measures we used. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Ptilohyale bisaeta (Kim & Kim, 1991) (Korean Name: Teol-chae-jjik-hae-jo-sum-i-yeop-sae-u) Hyale bisaeta Kim & Kim, 1991: 32, figs 18–20. Hyale crassicornis. — Kim & Kim, 1987: 14, fig. 12. Material examined. No specimens in the authors’ collections. Previous Korean records. Jejudo Is., Uleungdo Is. (Kim & Kim 1991). Diagnosis. Antenna 2, peduncular article 5 and flagellum densely setose. Pereopods 3–7, basis more than 2 x as long as ischium–dactylus combined. Uropod 1, outer ramus with 5–6 spines. Telson with one apical seta. Remarks. Our extensive collections did not contain this species, so Ptilohyale bisaeta remains unreported from Korea since Kim & Kim (1991). We tried to examine the type material which had been deposited in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. Unfortunately, the material has been lost so that we could not compare P. bisaeta with the remaining 2 Korean ptilohyalid species. The status of this species in Korea, therefore, is still unclear.Published as part of Eun, Ye, Kim, Young-Hyo, Hendrycks, Ed A. & Lee, Kyung-Sook, 2014, The family Hyalidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Talitroidea) from Korean waters. 1.
