Franz Grillparzers Frauenfiguren in sozialgeschichtlichem Kontext
No full textDiese Diplomarbeit bietet eine sozialgeschichtliche Analyse der Frauenfiguren Franz Grillparzers. Untersucht werden Mirza und Gülnare aus "Der Traum ein Leben", Hero aus "Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen" sowie Rahel aus "Die Jüdin von Toledo". Ausgehend von historischen Fakten über Frauenleben in der Biedermeierzeit vergleicht diese Arbeit im Rückgriff auf Ansätze der Gender studies Grillparzers Frauendarstellung mit den gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten der Biedermeierzeit. Diese Arbeit kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Grillparzer seine aufmüpfigen Frauenfiguren zwar scheitern lässt, allerdings dennoch in der Frage der Emanzipation der Frau Stellung bezieht. Diese Arbeit belegt, wie Grillparzer zeigt, dass das patriarchale Machtgefüge durch die Konfrontation mit autonomer Weiblichkeit in seinen Grundfesten erschüttert wird.This diploma thesis deals with Franz Grillparzer's female characters in a social historical context. The main focus is directed on the differences between the real circumstances of life in the Biedermeier period and Grillparzer's description of his female characters. The main results of this diploma thesis show, how partiarchal society is devastated by self-confident femininity

No full textDas Karg Heft 04 schließt an die allgemeine und grundlegende Beleuchtung von Werten in der schulischen Begabtenförderung an, die Thema von KARG HEFT 03 („Werte schulischer Begabtenförderung - Begabungsbegriff und Wertorientierung“) war, und rückt nunmehr den spezifischen Wertekontext „Leistung“ in den Fokus. Dabei geht es vor allem um eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der traditionellen Notengebung bzw. um die Realisierung einer veränderten Leistungskultur in Schulen.
Über die schulpädagogischen Aspekte hinaus wird dazu die Frage thematisiert, welche Werte im Zusammenhang mit dem Leistungsprinzip in der Begabtenförderung von Bedeutung sind. Während auf der einen Seite der Leistungsbegriff zu erweitern ist und bisher wenig beachtete Leistungsbereiche neu bzw. wieder zu erschließen sind, ist auf der anderen Seite der Blick auf Leistung zu relativieren und mit weiteren Aspekten der Begabtenförderung in Balance zu bringen.
Das Karg Heft 04 bildet Beiträge und Ergebnisse vom gleichnamigen GADHEIMER KREIS 2010 ab.

Geschlechterrollen, Machtverhältnisse und der Diskurs der Liebenden in Dramen Franz Grillparzers
No full textIn etlichen seiner Dramen greift Franz Grillparzer Stoffe aus spezifischen kulturgeschichtlichen Kontexten etwa aus mythischen, literarischen wie auch biblischen Überlieferungen auf, die gemeinsam haben, von berühmten, ungewöhnlichen und auch 'unwahrscheinlichen' Paaren, ihrem Glück und vor allem ihrem Unglück zu erzählen. An den Beispielen von „Sappho“, „Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen“, der Trilogie „Das goldene Vließ“, des Fragments „Esther“ und der „ Jüdin von Toledo“ lässt sich zeigen, dass Grillparzers Interesse dabei wiederholt nicht nur den ‚Katastrophen gilt, sondern vor allem auch jenen Vorgängen und Rahmenbedingungen, die dorthin führen. Die Tragödien dieser Paare, von der Dichterin Sappho und ihrem Bewunderer Phaon bis hin zum spanischen König Alfons und der Jüdin Rahel, erzählen von Überschreitungen herrschender Ordnungen, Herausforderung von Machtverhältnissen und nicht zuletzt einem Liebesdiskurs, der gängige Vorstellungen von ‚Weiblichkeit und ‚Männlichkeit hinterfragt und konterkariert. Im Erfahren der Liebe betreten die Figuren bei Grillparzer einen ihnen je eigenen, anderen Raum, eine ‚Heterotopie. Innerhalb dieser ist ihnen ein ‚Einswerden gegen alle Wahrscheinlichkeit und jenseits aller Normen und Konventionen möglich und erlaubt, jedenfalls bevor Repräsentanten der jeweiligen herausgeforderten Ordnung dagegen auftreten und es für diese großen Paare der Literatur (wie auch ihre Umgebung) zur Katastrophe kommt. Die Disseration untersucht Grillparzers Gestaltung der hier skizzierten dramatischen Handlungsmuster im Sinne eines Close Readings, dabei mit ‚Lesehilfen etwa durch Texte von Roland Barthes und Michel Foucault
99 cent: Price points in e-commerce
No full textBasu (2006) argues that the prevalence of 99 cent prices in shops can be explained with rational consumers who disregard the rightmost digits of the price. This bounded rational behaviour leads to a Bertrand equilibrium with positive markups. We use data from an Austrian price comparison site and find results highly compatible with Basu's theory. We can show that price points - in particular prices ending in 9 - are prevalent and have significant impact on consumer demand. Moreover, these price points are sticky; neither the price-setter itself wants to change them neither the rivals do underbid these prices, if they represent the cheapest price on the market. --Competitive Behaviour,Pricing Behaviour,E-Commerce,Pricing in the Nines,Focal Pricing
The fallacy of the Good Samaritan: Volunteering as a weird way of making money
No full textThis paper explores individual motives for volunteering: The analysis is based on the interpretation of volunteering as a consumption good (consumption model) or as a mean to increase individual’s own human capital (investment model). We present an econometric framework taking into account self selection into volunteering and simultaneity between the volunteering decision and the determination of income in order to test these two models and to identify the underlying motives. We find strong statistical evidence for the investment model with a highly robust and significant impact of volunteering on the wage rate. On average the wage premium as the difference in the wage rate between one person volunteering and not volunteering amounts up to 15.7 percent. Within the framework of the investment model it turns out that the number of volunteering hours plays a major role in explaining this wage premium. This supports the idea of volunteering as a mean to accumulate human capital and signalling willingness to perform. As far as the consumption model is concerned we find no convincing statistical evidence for its validity. The strong evidence for the investment model requires the consideration of voluntary activities in the estimation of wage equations. Moreover, we conclude that the existence of the wage premium is a decisive factor for people to volunteer or not and therefore reflects an important argument in the recruitment process of volunteers for several organisations.volunteering; voluntary labour supply; human capital accumulation; wage premium; altruism.

No full textThis collection consists primarily of Werfel family correspondence from 1940-1947. Letters and telegraphs mainly document Franz and Alma Werfel's escape from France to the United States, and the efforts of Franz's sisters Marianne Rieser and Hanna Fuchs-Robettin to help their parents escape Europe by way of France and Portugal. Additional correspondence concerns Ferdinand Rieser's work at the Zurich Schaupielhaus, and the collection also contains a typescript of the Marianne Rieser play "Your Problem Please."Author Franz Werfel (1890-1945) was born in Prague to the glove merchant Rudolph Werfel. He had two sisters, playwright Marianne Amalie Rieser (1899-1965) and Hanna Fuchs-Robettin (1896-1964). Werfel was educated in Prague, and from 1915 to 1917 he served in the Austrian army on the Russian front. After the war he settled in Vienna and worked as a full-time writer. His novels were especially popular in England and in the United States. In Vienna he met Alma Mahler-Gropius (1879-1964), the widow of the composer Gustav Mahler. At that time she was married to the architect Walter Gropius. She divorced Gropius and went to live with Werfel; they were married in 1929. The Werfels lived in Austria until 1938, when the Anschluss forced them into exile. After travelling from France to Spain, they settled in the United States in 1940. Franz Werfel died in Beverly Hills, California, on August 26, 1945, in the middle of his work, correcting galley proof of his last book of verse.Alma Schindler was born in Vienna in 1879 as the daughter of the landscape painter Emil Jakob Schindler. She studied with the composer Alexander von Zemlinsky and in 1902 married Gustav Mahler. In 1915, she married the architect Walter Gropius; the couple separated in 1918.
