Heterogenous childhood, homogeneous education? Love letters in three groups of Mexican children [Infancia heterogénea. Educação homogénea? Cartas de amor em tres grupos de crianzas mexicanas]

    No full text
The article presents the investigation made on three social groups of Mexican children regarding their writing. The results of the letters' analyses show the existence of at least three assumptions of the gender letter related to three communication contexts of the writers. From the confirmation of these differences, which are used in the writing, the author criticizes Mexican national educational plan, both the official homogeneous model and the intercultural education. The work finishes with a suggestion of a teaching policy for writing and language instruments

On the pathway to better birth outcomes? A systematic review of azithromycin and curable sexually transmitted infections.

The WHO recommends the administration of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) to all pregnant women living in areas of moderate (stable) to high malaria transmission during scheduled antenatal visits, beginning in the second trimester and continuing to delivery. Malaria parasites have lost sensitivity to SP in many endemic areas, prompting the investigation of alternatives that include azithromycin-based combination (ABC) therapies. Use of ABC therapies may also confer protection against curable sexually transmitted infections and reproductive tract infections (STIs/RTIs). The magnitude of protection at the population level would depend on the efficacy of the azithromycin-based regimen used and the underlying prevalence of curable STIs/RTIs among pregnant women who receive preventive treatment. This systematic review summarizes the efficacy data of azithromycin against curable STIs/RTIs

Revolutionary mothers women in the struggle for America's independence

    No full text
The American Revolution was a home-front war that brought scarcity, bloodshed, and danger into the life of every American. The author shows that women played a vital role throughout the struggle: we see women boycotting British goods in the years before independence, writing propaganda that radicalized their neighbors, raising funds for the army, and helping finance the fledgling government. We see how they managed farms, plantations, and businesses while their men went into battle, and how they served as nurses and cooks in the army camps; risked their lives carrying intelligence, participating in reconnaissance missions, or seeking personal freedom from slavery; served as spies, saboteurs, and warriors; and lived with the daily knowledge that their husbands could be hanged as traitors if the revolution did not succeed

Speer: Drawing the Future of the Past

    No full text
For Albert Speer, official architect of the Third Reich, the graphical representation of architecture played an important role, more than was normal in his profession. A series of early sketches exchanged with Adolf Hitler have been preserved as witnesses to the architectural debates between them, forerunners of major projects implemented by armies of technicians at his service. Moreover, the dictator and the architect shared another unique interest, a nostalgic attraction for paintings and engravings depicting ruins of the great ancient empires. This peculiar interest gradually became an obsession as to how the ruins of the works they were building would be seen in the future. This is like the funeral arrangements for a baby being established before it has even been born. This fixation resulted in idealised perspectives, commissioned by the architect during the construction of the works, and in other clandestine drawings produced during his captivity in Spandau prison. The text specifically analyses the role of graphical representation in the concept of the perception of future ruins through artistic references from the past, reflections written in his memoirs and drawings by Speer himself. Although his architectural and urban development work has been extensively analysed, his drawings have not aroused much interest, despite their importance to him. This activity also allowed him, during the twenty years he spent in prison, to record and summarise his memories and lost dreams on paper. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG

Aspects of the history of the Catholic gentry of Yorkshire from the Pilgrimage of Grace to the First Civil War

    No full text
This study looks at the responses of the Yorkshire Catholic gentry to the immense changes to their religious landscape in the early modem period, between 1536 and 1642. It examines how they continued to adhere to the Catholic religion, despite all attempts first to induce and then compel conformity and highlights the ways in which they managed to survive and prosper throughout the period, demonstrating that previously neglected groups such as women and younger sons had a crucial role to play in this process. The overwhelming theme to their actions was one of pragmatism, rather than the heroic and self-destructive behaviour that was much admired by earlier historians who wanted to identify martyrs to the Catholic cause. The areas that are to be examined reflect both public and private gentry activities. In the public sphere the Yorkshire gentry's part in the rebellions of the Tudor and Stuart eras are studied along with their rejection of plots. The importance of marriage as an early modem tool for building alliances and social advancement is acknowledged and the impact that a continuing adherence to Catholicism had on this is considered. The gentry and the church are examined through a study of the Catholic gentry's involvement with their local parishes, their reaction to the dissolution and their continuing adherence to monasticism, as shown through their devotion to English orders on the continent. To reflect the changes that were occurring in this period Catholic involvement in education, the law and medicine are also explored showing that the Catholic community was not isolated from the wider society. Lastly the role of Catholic women is given specific consideration in order both to redress the imbalance in previous studies and due to the crucial role that women played in the continuation of the Catholic community within Yorkshire

Air and surface sampling for clade Ib monkeypox virus in United Kingdom hospitals, 2024 to 2025

    No full text
Air and surface sampling was performed in isolation rooms of seven patients with clade Ib mpox admitted to high consequence infectious disease centres in the United Kingdom. We detected monkeypox virus (MPXV) DNA in 66/90 surfaces samples and 1/14 air samples; replication competent MPXV was identified in 4/21 surface samples selected for viral isolation. These findings demonstrate that viable clade Ib MPXV contamination can occur during treatment of clade Ib mpox patients reinforcing the importance of infection prevention and control measures

Cervico-mandibular muscle activity in females with chronic cervical pain a descriptive, cross-sectional, correctional study

    No full text
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.Chronic musculoskeletal conditions of the spine and periphery are a burden both internationally and in South Africa. There is a socio-economic burden as a consequence of the severity, duration and recurrence of chronic cervical musculoskeletal conditions among information technology and sedentary office workers. However, the precise mechanisms behind chronic cervical disorders remain unclear. It is theorised that the pathophysiological mechanisms in chronic cervical musculoskeletal conditions share a similar theoretical framework to chronic pain itself. The biopsychosocial model of chronic pain accepts the dynamic nature of pain. This model accepts the dual biological and psychosocial components that enhance the experience and maintenance of chronic pain, through central sensitisation. There appears to be a neurophysiological, biomechanical and psychological link between the cervical area and the temporomandibular area. Although numerous studies have implied that individuals with temporomandibular disorders have concurrent cervical dysfunction, there is currently no evidence that individuals with cervical dysfunction exhibit altered muscle activity in the masseter and cervical erector spinae muscles or report teeth clenching habits. Consequently, identification of factors that may contribute to chronic cervical musculoskeletal conditions, stemming from the temporomandibular area, may potentially be lost. The aim of the present study was to explore the activity levels of the cervicomandibular muscles in females with chronic cervical musculoskeletal conditions, who showed no symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. This study had a descriptive cross-sectional correlational design with single-blinding. The telephonic screening process was followed by the signing of informed consent forms. Validated questionnaires were used for categorisation and comparison of the socio-demographic and biopsychosocial profiles of the pain group (n = 20) and the no pain group (n = 22). The screening, informed consent and questionnaires were completed by an assistant. The first of five questionnaires, the adapted Research Diagnostic Criteria History questionnaire, was used as an instrument for exclusion of temporomandibular disorders and the recording of a daytime parafunctional teeth clenching habit. The remaining four questionnaires, listed as the Neck Disability Index, the Computer Usage Questionnaire, the Brief Pain Inventory, and the EuroQol-5D were used for determining levels of cervical disability for categorisation and comparison between groups, as well as for determining levels of pain-related disability, occupational and sporting activity, and health related quality of life
