    No full text
Although 'The Revival of Islam and Muslims' has not been studied, discussed and researched in the past as a specific subject of Islamic Sciences or as a part of Islamic curricula in seminaries and educational institutions, at present it has become a hot cake for intellectual and academic discourse among Muslim and non-Muslim scholars alike. In this context the present study investigates, examines and critically analyses the ideology of Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri regarding Islamic Revivalism. This study examines the areas of Muslim Thought which have been subjected to severe ailments and distortions, during the decline period of the Muslim Ummah, leading them to inactivity and stagnancy. I also attempt to suggest various remedial measures to overcome the prevailing conditions, using the ideology of revivalism by Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri critically compared with other ideologies of Maududi and al-Banna. Furthermore, I will analyse the ideology of Dr Al-Qadri for the reconstruction of the political, economic, juristic, religious and spiritual thought of Islam in the contemporary context. As Qur'anic Philosophy of Revivalism is a new concept in academia, there is vast scope for investigation of this field to discover new horizons in this particular subject ofIslamic sciences bringing forth some new aspects of research regarding the revival of Islam and Muslims. The present study will enhance the knowledge, background, rationale, significance as well as the necessity of the revival of Islam and its religious, spiritual, academic, legal, juristic, economic and political values and also create awareness for the reformation of the prevailing declining and decaying conditions of Muslim societies around the globe. Consequently, this thesis will enable one to realise and appreciate the significance of revivalism in the contemporary context. In the main, my methodology focuses on library research in relation to the works of Dr Al-Qadri as well as other revivalists in contemporary Muslim Thought. Thus, I will rely heavily on the Islamic core sources approach to Tafsir, Hadith scholarship and Islamic law (Fiqh) in terms of textual analysis.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

A building of might and faith : Rafiq Hariri and the Muhammad al-Amin mosque : on the political dimensions of religious architecture in contemporary Beirut

    No full text
Set up in three main parts, this dissertation explores the emergence of Rafiq Hariri as a political actor (I), the historic origins of the Muhammad al-Amin Mosque project (II) and the association of the former Lebanese prime minister with Lebanon’s main Sunni place of worship (III). Besides being a powerful testimony to the impressive reconstruction effort in Lebanon in general and in Beirut in particular, this monumental mosque also represents a symbol of political and religious identification. The aim of this research is double: to track down the gradual involvement of the former head of government in sponsoring a 150 year old project, and to enquire about the ways the construction of a mosque can strengthen the legitimacy of a political actor within a multi-confessional societal context. Based on field research (2004 – 2009) and a systematic analysis of written, visual and oral sources, the objective is to explain how the appearance of this sanctuary of Lebanese Sunni officialdom participates in a wider dynamic that apprehends religious architecture in Beirut (at least partly) as a set of semi-public and semi-sacred spaces where the intricacies and links between politics, religion and urban sociology materialize in tangible and observable way. In fact, both the coming about of this prestigious mosque and the transformations of the adjacent Maronite cathedral illustrate the political subtleties of religious architecture as well as the ambiguities of intermingling communities. Moreover, the Muhammad al-Amin Mosque and the commemorative tomb of Rafiq Hariri installed immediately next to it offer an interesting field of observation that reveals developments, struggles and practices which document just how a reputation and a political legacy are being constructed, negotiated, mobilized, oriented and reoriented, according to the needs and wishes of the elites. Through a substantial biographical essay on Rafiq Hariri (chapters 1-3), juxtaposed to a recollection of the various construction phases of the Muhammad al-Amin Mosque (ch. 4), a detailed description (ch. 5) and a critical analysis of the latter by local experts (ch. 6), this research presents itself as a study that encompasses several disciplines and adopts, as a consequence, a methodological pluralism. Although the author concentrates the bulk of his attention on the complexities and interests at stake in contemporary Lebanon (ch. 7-8), in a final chapter he also examines a selection of major religious architectural projects, in order to provide for a wider contextualisation, both in time and space. The conclusion is that, no matter the place or the time and notwithstanding occasional exploitations of it, (religious) architecture turns out to be a fertile prism which, rather than a competition among communities reflects their diversity and exemplifies their interaction.

    No full text
The aim of the present study is to determine the collaborative activities of Asian library and information science (LIS) researchers through bibliometric, social network analysis at the author, institution, and country levels of the LIS publications produced by Asian researchers. For the study, research articles were derived from the 1994-2013 Web of Science (WoS) archives. Coauthor analysis software was used to analyze author contributions on the New Modified Author Activity Index (NMAAI(1, 2, 3))-a measurement tool to evaluate author research activities. Results reveal (a) that LIS "institutions collaboration pattern" outcomes did not yield strong collaboration with Asian countries or regions, (b) intracontinent and intercontinent collaboration was less harmonious on institutional and author levels, and (c) interpretation through NMAAI(1,2,3) revealed that Asian countries did not produce sufficient collaborative LIS publications. Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Iran, Israel, and Turkey have been producing ample LIS papers, but the United States and United Kingdom emerged as leaders. This work provides a holistic view of Asian LIS development and emphasizes individual levels of collaboration, finding that most influential authors serve on coauthor networks, which differentiates this study from previous studies in the LIS field. There is immense need to develop liaisons, sign memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and participate in combined research plans and short-term research exchange programs.BIT; National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) [71033001, 71273030]; MOST of China [2012DFG11750][email protected]

Chronobiology to Chronopsychology: Implications in Psychotherapy

    No full text
Chronobiology is the study of biological rhythms. Biological rhythms are driven endogenously in the form of biochemical or physiological processes and are altered by external cues or stimuli.1 These external environmental cues or stimuli are the zeitgebers, the important one of these cues is daylight. Zeitgebers the stimuli which are capable to entrain/alter circadian rhythms.2 The daily rhythms have been observed not only in mammals but also in plants, fungi, and cyanobacteria.3 Recent studies have shown that the pacemaker for daily rhythms is located in the supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus in the brain.4 When the SCN is stimulated by any zeitgeber like light, temperature, etc. from the surroundings, it sets the principal timing cues to synchronize the circadian rhythms of different proteins in brain tissues.5 It has been widely studied that proteins are responsible not only for making cell structures but also involved in physiological functioning. So, depending on time of the day, the physiological functioning is altered which further leads to the alteration of the behaviours.  Chronopsychology Chronopsychology can be defined as the study of behaviors that oscillate rhythmically with time. These behaviors may have circadian (about 24 hours), infradian (more than 24 hours), and ultradian (less than 24 hours) rhythms. Additionally, it has been reported that there are seasonal variations as well as due to altered environmental zeitgebers leading to altered proteins and physiology.6 In this way, the altered profile of proteins and physiological parameters, leads to altered behaviors.7 Studies have indicated that due to significant daily alteration of biological molecules at cellular levels, may lead to daily variation in mood which may be responsible for the development of mood disorders including depression, mild depression, and seasonal affective disorder.8 The gap in psychotherapy? As literature confirms that there are daily alteration of biochemicals including brain proteins which may alter respective physiological activities. So, due to the time-dependent alteration of certain physiological parameters, the linked behaviors may fluctuate at other time points of the day. As studies have shown that various brain neurotransmitters that are involved especially in cognition like dopamine show daily variations.9-10 Due to the daily variation of neurotransmitters, psychological functioning may show daily variations and it is indicated that circadian rthytms disruption may lead to mental health issues.11 Studies have shown that physiological functions like memory performance and learning follow a daily rhythm.12 So, if the disruption of the circadian rhythm leads to mental health issues, that means health issues may have time dependency. As physiological, psychological, and mental health issues have shown daily rhythms, so psychotherapeutic intervention may have a different time-dependent effect. Effective approach As discussed above, physiological parameters may fluctuate during 24 hours of the day due to specific protein levels at the specific time of the day. This variation may lead to altering certain behaviors. So, any psychotherapeutic intervention aimed at managing behavior may produce better outcomes when planned at a certain time slot of the day that needs to be studied. However, studies have shown that different cognitive skills including learning, memory are due to neurotrophic factors that show daily variation with a peak in the morning time slots.13 So, if any psychotherapeutic session aimed for augmenting cognitive skills may be accomplished in the morning time slots for better outcomes. Psychotherapy is aimed at suggesting the client and hyper suggestibility is observed with slow brain waves, especially in the prefrontal cortex. The peak of circadian variation of alpha brain waves (0-12 Hz) is linked with low body temperature14 and circadian rhythms of low body temperature are the evening hours. So, it may be assumed that psychotherapy aimed to increase suggestibility like hypnotherapy should be conducted in the evening hours as compared to morning hours. The suggestions in the mornings may be resisted due to the peak levels of cortisol, as cortisol is linked to distress which makes people more critical and suggestibility may be reduced. The author names this time-based psychotherapeutic intervention as chronopsychotherapy. Therefore, understanding the basic principles of chronobiology can help how biological processes follow rhythms and how this impacts therapeutic intervention. So, it may be concluded that therapeutic intervention either pharmacological or psychological may have different outcomes at different time points of the day that needs to be explored and certain empirical studies should be conducted to validate this concept of chronopsychotherapy

Synthesis of Model Based Robust Stabilizing Reactor Power Controller for Nuclear Power Plant

    No full text
In this paper, a nominal SISO (Single Input Single Output) model of PHWR (Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor) type nuclear power plant is developed based on normal moderator pump-up rate capturing the moderator level dynamics using system identification technique. As the plant model is not exact, therefore additive and multiplicative uncertainty modeling is required. A robust perturbed plant model is derived based on worst case model capturing slowest moderator pump-up rate dynamics and moderator control valve opening delay. Both nominal and worst case models of PHWR-type nuclear power plant have ARX (An Autoregressive Exogenous) structures and the parameters of both models are estimated using recursive LMS (Least Mean Square) optimization algorithm. Nominal and worst case discrete plant models are transformed into frequency domain for robust controller design purpose. The closed loop system is configured into two port model form and H? robust controller is synthesized. The H?controller is designed based on singular value loop shaping and desired magnitude of control input. The selection of desired disturbance attenuation factor and size of the largest anticipated multiplicative plant perturbation for loop shaping of H? robust controller form a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. The performance and robustness of the proposed controller is tested under transient condition of a nuclear power plant in Pakistan and found satisfactory

    No full text
Higher order mathematical modeling and discrete fast output sampling control synthesis for PHWR (Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor)-type nuclear power plant is presented in this paper. The nonlinear dynamic model of PHWR power reactor is developed based on reactor, logarithmic amplifier, moderator level control valve and reactivity system. The nonlinear model is characterized by 15 state variables and one input. This higher order nonlinear model is linearized at full power operating point. A standard higher order state space model is realized for controller design purpose. An advanced discrete controller is synthesized for state space model of PHWR using fast output sampling methodology. Noise sensitivity is a typical problem with this type of controller. In this research work, a small deviation is allowed in order to reduce the noise sensitivity. Theproblems of noise sensitivity and poor output error dynamics are addressed and a multi-objective optimization problem is solved using LMI (Linear Matrix Inequalities) formulation. Fast output feedback gains are computed using LMI tool for MATLAB. An advanced fast output sampling controller is evaluated for power maneuvering from 270 MWth to 310 MWth on the nuclear power plant in Pakistan and found highly efficient and satisfactory within the control design constraints
