An Iterative 3D Correction plus 2D Inversion Procedure to Remove 3D Effects from 2D ERT Data along Embankments
This paper addresses the problem of removing 3D effects as one of the most challenging problems related to 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring of embankment structures. When processing 2D ERT monitoring data measured along linear profiles, it is fundamental to estimate and correct the distortions introduced by the non-uniform 3D geometry of the embankment. Here, I adopt an iterative 3D correction plus 2D inversion procedure to correct the 3D effects and I test the validity of the proposed algorithm using both synthetic and real data. The modelled embankment is inspired by a critical section of the Parma River levee in Colorno (PR), Italy, where a permanent ERT monitoring system has been in operation since November 2018. For each model of the embankment, reference synthetic data were produced in Res2dmod and Res3dmod for the corresponding 2D and 3D models. Using the reference synthetic data, reference 3D effects were calculated to be compared with 3D effects estimated by the proposed algorithm at each iteration. The results of the synthetic tests showed that even in the absence of a priori information, the proposed algorithm for correcting 3D effects converges rapidly to ideal corrections. Having validated the proposed algorithm through synthetic tests, the method was applied to the ERT monitoring data in the study site to remove 3D effects. Two real datasets from the study site, taken after dry and rainy periods, are discussed here. The results showed that 3D effects cause about ±50% changes in the inverted resistivity images for both periods. This is a critical artifact considering that the final objective of ERT monitoring data for such studies is to produce water content maps to be integrated in alarm systems for hydrogeological risk mitigation. The proposed algorithm to remove 3D effects is thus a rapid and validated solution to satisfy near-real-time data processing and to produce reliable results
GPR measurements to detect major discontinuities at Cheshmeh-Shirdoosh limestone quarry, Iran
In recent years, the Iranian rich quarry industry has been looking for efficient scientific investigations to improve the extraction operations in different dimension stone quarries. Kerman Province is one of the most potential zones with a variety of dimension stone quarries near the city of Kerman. In this research, GPR measurements were carried out to detect major discontinuities at Cheshmeh-Shirdoosh limestone quarry, northeast of Kerman city. This quarry is being extracted by the diamond wire sawing method. As the first GPR study in Iranian quarries, a total length of about 1200 m was surveyed with 50 MHz and 250 MHz GPR antennas collecting data on the surface of the three extraction benches of the quarry. A 800 MHz antenna was also used to map the main defects of a block, which was extracted from a fractured section of the quarry. Six parallel profiles at 10 cm intervals were measured along one side of the block. The results obtained from the 250 MHz dataset were very encouraging and could detect all the major discontinuities. Interpreted profiles were also used to prepare depth slices of the density of joints for two main survey areas. As expected, GPR sections obtained from the 50 MHz antenna had a lower resolution but could clearly detect fault zones. The 800 MHz antenna could map the main defects of the extracted block. However, a higher frequency antenna (e.g., 2GHz or more) is recommended for mapping thin fractures

3D ERT modellings to explore the effect of 3D geometry on 2D ERT monitoring of river levees
The aim of this thesis is to shed light on one of the most challenging problems related to 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring of river embankments.
Knowing that 2D ERT monitoring is less expensive and time consuming than 3D measurements, a reasonable approach is to use 2D measurements to adequately monitor the internal conditions of embankments. It is then necessary to estimate and correct the distortions from the 3D geometry in order to make the measured data the most reliable as possible.
A permanent ERT monitoring system was installed along a critical part of a river embankment in Colorno (PR) on 26 November 2018. ERT data are to be used to detect the moisture dynamics inside the levee and, if thresholds of instability are met, to alert the population and the authority for the flood risk.
In this thesis, 3D geometry effects are quantified for 2D ERT data measured along this river embankment. Five parallel ERT profiles were also measured along the levee to explore 3D effects for different lateral positions of 2D profiles.
Based on resistivity measurements at the study site, four different models were defined in RES2DMOD and RES3DMODx64 to quantify the 3D effects. Using the pseudosections of the differences between 2D and 3D calculations, measured datasets were corrected for 3D geometry effects.
The results showed that 3D effects significantly distort 2D data. It was also observed that 3D effects are not only influenced by the geometry of the embankment but also by resistivity distribution in the levee. Graphs of the ratio of calculated resistivity values from RES3DMODx64 to those from RES2DMOD can be used to correct measured data for each level. Corrected data can then be inverted to obtain more accurate images

The aim of this M.Sc. thesis is the evaluation of the percentage distribution of the localization error obtained from previous elaboration optimization, using the software developed by Baccarini F. and Del Pero J. in the M.Sc. thesis “Sviluppo software di localizzazione superstiti per strumenti acustici utilizzabili nelle operazioni di search and rescue” and subsequently optimized in the M.Sc. thesis “ottimizzazione e sperimentazione di algoritmi di localizzazione per operazioni di search and rescue in cumuli di macerie con strumentazione microsismica” by Villacci V.
This software, developed with App Designer, a software environment for app creation with MATLAB, aims to localize survivors under piles of rubble resulting from seismic events, explosions, collapses or static and hydrogeological failures by elaborating microseismic data.
Many software simulations have been implemented starting from two different datasets and subsequent evalutations from the results obtained with the software.
The first of these datasets is derived from experiments conducted on rubble of aggregates at “Crosignani E. Figli S.R.L” quarry in Arluno, in province of Milano.
The second dataset has been obtained at the rubble field of Pisa dedicated to the training of fire department.
In the experiments conducted in Arluno, different geometric configurations of the layout of the geophones have been applied, while in those conducted in Pisa the configuration adopted consists of nine sensors; from the results of these experiments, it can be stated that the best localization results are obtained with geometric configurations consisting of nine or eight geophones.
The development of this software does not represent an alternative to existing research techniques, but rather aims to integrate them improving their efficiency
Abstract
This work is part of a project named Tech Levee Watch, funded by Cariplo Foundation placed within a bigger project, DILEMMA, which is funded by “Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare”.
Either projects have common targets: to forecast and prevent hydrogeological risks related to levee instability by integrating diverse geophysical techniques.
My thesis is focused on the permanent geoelectric monitoring of earth embankments.
The collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and LSI-Lastem (environmental monitoring solutions company) has developed an innovative customized resistivity system which can be located in critical sites in order to provide remote time-lapse measurements.
This system isn’t a mere analysis instrument, but it can be used as a device for early warning alarms, so I’ve developed some alarm algorithms and alert thresholds for this system by using the environment for the numerical calculation MATLAB.
The principal aim of every single algorithm is triggering intervention procedures in the case of abnormal situations of the data acquired, in order to prevent the instability or potential damages in the structure due to the high saturated ground and the phenomena of piping .
At first, critical situations have been identified so as to settle the alarm thresholds.
The algorithms developed are based on inverted resistivity measurements carried out at San Giacomo delle Segnate (MN), one of the pilot sites.
The thesis offers a series of algorithms based on similar structures aiming to provide useful criteria for LSI-Lastem, when the company will contemplate the idea of deployment and following calibration of the alarm system, once the company has collected more data
One of the main objectives of this thesis is to analyze the functionality of the Matlab code package of IP4DI, an open source software used for inversion of geoelectric data.
After a careful analysis of the implementation of both the forward and the inverse problem, it was decided to perform some changes in order to improve the calculation method for a more accurate result and also, we attempted to introduce useful potentialities not present in the software via iterative methods.
Since an important point in the inversion process is the construction of the forward modeling mesh, it was decided to pay particular attention to it. In this regard, the way in which the forward modeling grid is constructed has been changed, so that the maximum number of layers that make it up is calculated based on the maximum spacing between the electrodes and on the number of electrodes, which has been supplemented with an additional number of layers. This calculation method is introduced in order to best reproduce the conditions of propagation of the injected current, modeling the infinite boundaries.
To validate this methodological approach, we conduct various inversions starting from analytical models, the test results show that the addition of more layers refines the result of the inversion, limiting as much as possible the effects produced by the edges.
The IP4DI software allows the inversion of data both with surface electrodes and with Cross Borehole electrodes. A further approach was to implement into the code the possibility of doing the modeling prosses with buried electrodes with horizontal spreading. This modification was carried out to ensure that a more accurate replication of the real situation of the underground could be obtained in the case in which the data acquisition is performed with a horizontal spreading in a trench. Since the correct positioning of the electrodes is not considered as predominant factor, and the geometric coefficient of the surface electrodes is used as relevant instead of the one correlated with buried electrodes so that a deamplification of the resistivity values corresponding to the most superficial layers can be observed.
As a conclusion, to validate the new implementation, tests were carried out starting from analytical models. From the various tests, we have seen that the use of a software that takes into account the burial of the electrodes can be useful in particular cases, such as a model with a thin and conductive first layer. For the models in question the results of the inversions carried out both with buried electrodes and those with surface electrodes after the correction of the data reporting them on the surface, thanks to the modification of the geometric coefficient, are very similar. Therefore, in cases that are not particularly complex, the data can be corrected reporting the electrodes on the surface and than inverting the date with software that use surface electrodes
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare the way in which the ERT software, IP4DI and BERT, work. The purpose is to suggest to LSI-Lastem which one is the best to work in the field of geoelectrical monitoring. The company, in more than 5 years, has been collaborating with Politecnico di Milano in order to design and produce a new geoelectrical monitoring control unit. For this aim I carried out a 6-month internship in LSI-Lastem.
The first section of this thesis contains the description of the “Tech-Levee-Watch” and “DILEMMA” projects. This work is a part of them. Then, a bibliographic study has been done about the evolution of the time-lapse inversion algorithms in order to determine the progresses achieved in last decades. The aim is to find the best algorithm to suggest LSI-Lastem for the time-lapse inversion, considering both the computational cost and the accuracy.
Afterwards, thanks to a deep bibliographical research, I described how the two software work. I analysed the forward and the inversion problems and how they deal with them and in particular how they build the mesh. Through this study, it was possible to have a preliminary view of the capabilities and limitations of the two software.
The final decision about which was the software to implement in the LSI-Lastem systems, was taken after a wide comparison of the inversion results of apparent resistivity data, derived from the two software. The comparison was done using real apparent resistivity data (campaign and laboratory data) and synthetic data. A third software, widely used in scientific and professional fields (RES2DINV), was used to validate the results derived from IP4DI and BERT.
I made a final test in order to evaluate the possibility to use time-lapse inversion algorithms instead of single-time-step ones. For this purpose, I examined results coming from the two types of algorithms both on laboratory and field data, through RES2DINV software.
This work was crucial to determine which software, between IP4DI and BERT, provided the most trustworthy results along with a limited computational cost, in order to be implemented in the monitoring control units
This work, developed as a part of the Tech Levee Watch project, aims to provide a contribution in the field of the geoelectric monitoring on earthen levees constructed at the laboratory scale, focusing on the main issues related with this kind of acquisition.
First, was conducted a literature research about the topic of the distortions induced by three-dimensionality of the structure on acquisitions realised through 2D profiles.
Then, after the construction at the laboratory scale, using material from the real site, of the levee located in San Giacomo delle Segnate (MN), different boundary conditions, suitable to reproduce the situations at which a real levee may be subjected, were simulated.
The focus was on the simulation of an irrigation phase, of a rainfall phase in partially saturated conditions and of a situation of piping induced by excavations in the levee structure.
The measurements, performed in Wenner configuration, have been realized using two miniaturised cables equipped with 48 electrodes. The measured data have been subjected to an elaboration phase characterised by the correction from the distortion effects caused by the presence of buried electrodes, by the geometry of the structure and by the high resistivity base.
Finally, the inversion of the corrected apparent resistivity data was carried out to allow the evaluation of the variations in the internal state of the levee subjected to the different boundary conditions tested.
In conclusion, the work proposes a complete overview of the most common issues related with geoelectric monitoring on earthen levees, particularly about the distortions caused by 3D effects. The thesis provides necessary tools for a correct elaboration of the apparent resistivity data and for a coherent interpretation about the internal levee conditions
