Calcium homeostasis in ageing: studies on the calcium binding protein calbindin D-28K
Calbindin D-28K is a neuronal calcium binding protein which may act as a buffer of neuronal calcium. Evidence suggests that disturbance of calcium homeostasis is important in neurodegeneration, possibly via changes in calbindin D-28K. Immunoreactivity of calbindin D-28K is compared in Alzheimer's disease and age-matched controls. The size and number of calbindin D-28K positive neurons in Alzheimer's disease tissue is reduced. There is also shrinkage of the dendritic tree. Continuing work examines the function of calbindin D-28K using transgenic mice
Fast Construction of Fejér and Clenshaw-Curtis rules for general weight functions
The main purpose of this paper is to compute the weights of Clenshaw-Curtis and Fejér type quadrature rules via DCT and DST, for general weight functions w. The approach is different from that used by Waldvogel in [25], where the author considered the computation of these sets only for the Legendre weight w ≡ 1 using DFT arguments

Experimental evidence that viscous shear zones generate periodic pore sheets
In experiments designed to understand deep shear zones, we show that periodic porous sheets emerge spontaneously during viscous creep and that they facilitate mass transfer. These findings challenge conventional expectations of how viscosity in solid rocks operates and provide quantitative data in favour of an alternative paradigm, that of the dynamic granular fluid pump model. On this basis, we argue that our results warrant a reappraisal of the community's perception of how viscous deformation in rocks proceeds with time and suggest that the general model for deep shear zones should be updated to include creep cavitation. Through our discussion we highlight how the integration of creep cavitation, and its Generalised Thermodynamic paradigm, would be consequential for a range of important solid Earth topics that involve viscosity in Earth materials like, for example, slow earthquakes.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic

Identifying idiolect in forensic authorship attribution: an n-gram textbite approach
Forensic authorship attribution is concerned with identifying authors of disputed or anonymous documents, which are potentially evidential in legal cases, through the analysis of linguistic clues left behind by writers. The forensic linguist “approaches this problem of questioned authorship from the theoretical position that every native speaker has their own distinct and individual version of the language [. . . ], their own idiolect” (Coulthard, 2004: 31). However, given the diXculty in empirically substantiating a theory of idiolect, there is growing concern in the Veld that it remains too abstract to be of practical use (Kredens, 2002; Grant, 2010; Turell, 2010). Stylistic, corpus, and computational approaches to text, however, are able to identify repeated collocational patterns, or n-grams, two to six word chunks of language, similar to the popular notion of soundbites: small segments of no more than a few seconds of speech that journalists are able to recognise as having news value and which characterise the important moments of talk. The soundbite oUers an intriguing parallel for authorship attribution studies, with the following question arising: looking at any set of texts by any author, is it possible to identify ‘n-gram textbites’, small textual segments that characterise that author’s writing, providing DNA-like chunks of identifying material
The Liability of a Registered Association’s Executive Board for gross Negligence«To their association as well as to the German treasury, the association’s board is »only« liable for gross negligence (§§ 31a BGB, 69 AO). The author examines the legal term both in civil association law and in tax law, considering the voluntary nature of the office. He presents guidelines for central constellations of liability such as a division of responsibilities among the board, an error of law or contributory negligence of other bodies of the association, third parties or the tax creditor
An Intervention for the Proceduralization of the Lex Lata (Section 266 German Criminal Code)«The present study represents an intervention for the proceduralization of the German criminal offence of »breach of trust« (section 266 German Criminal Code) on the basis of transparency as the procedural criterion. Based on a historical, criminological, and system-theoretical analysis and after systematizing the criticism of the German criminal offence of »breach of trust«, the author presents a concept of a procedural criminal law on »breach of trust« within the framework of a lex ferenda, thereby serving as an example for the proceduralization of other white collar offenses
Microarray gene expression profiling of neural tissues in bovine spastic paresis
Bovine Spastic Paresis (BSP) is a neuromuscular disorder which affects both male and female cattle. BSP is characterized by spastic contraction and overextension of the gastrocnemious muscle of one or both limbs and is associated with a scarce increase in body weight. This disease seems to be caused by an autosomal and recessive gene, with incomplete penetration, although no genes clearly involved with its onset have been so far identified. We employed cDNA microarrays to identify metabolic pathways affected by BSP in Romagnola cattle breed. Investigation of those pathways at the genome level can help to understand this disease
