Lo chansonnier du roi. Luoghi e autori della lirica e della musica europee del Duecento
The Chansonnier du Roi (Paris, BNF f. fr. 844) is one of the most important sources for trouvère and troubadour lyrics, but also for early motets. Compiled around 1250 in Artois, the manuscript was later enriched with a unique collection of Occitan, French and Latin monophonic songs and instrumental dances in mensural notation. In the last decades, this chansonnier has been studied both from musicologists (Peraino and Haines) and romance philologists (Battelli and Asperti). Insights from these two fields, however, have never been brought together. This is my aim in this paper, focusing in particular on the later additions to the manuscript, about which I will also present new palaeographical evidence. My central hypothesis is that fr. 844 was brought to the Angevin court of Naples, probably around 1282, by Robert II of Artois. Here poets and artists from Northern France, Occitania and Aragon contributed to a multicultural milieu, where the chansonnier could have been exposed to new styles. Moreover, in comparison with similar sources, the compilers’ predilection for literary genres specifically connected to dance and music, as well as the use of mensural notation but also metrical irregularities and mise en texte strategies, show a unique interest in sound and performance. Ultimately, I expand the geography of thirteenth-century music, claiming Naples as major cultural centers of vernacular monophony
„Cantare alla greca con citere e violini”: transfery i lokalne adaptacje muzyki Zachodu na wczesnonowożytnej Krecie
During the late mediaeval and early modern periods, Crete was the most important Venetian colony, giving the Republic almost unchallenged commercial and military control of the eastern Mediterranean. Based on archive and documentary evidence, this article discusses the role played by music as a means of social and cultural control over the native Cretan population.
After a brief introduction to the history of the Venetian domination of Crete (aka Venetocracy) and of its impact on local literature and visual arts, the first section deals with the presence of Western music in the Venetian secular and religious institutions. From a very early stage, Venice started employing locals as civic musicians (mostly trumpeters and ‘piffari’). For the locals themselves, a stable role in the local musical institution represented an opportunity for income and social ascension; for the Republic, meanwhile, it was a means of political and cultural control. Music was also central to religious institutions, as documented by archive sources. The main churches and monasteries on the island had instruments and singers and provided training for the Catholic clergy and musicians.
The article goes on to explore the dissemination of Western secular instrumental and polyphonic practices in the main Cretan cities, taking as a case study literary sources dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries which testify to polyphonic compositions in Greek, such as madrigals and incidental music. A last example is represented by the chivalric romance Erotokritos, containing references to Western musical symbolism, such as the myth of Orpheus as a good rhetor and sovereign, and the lute representing civic harmony. Written by a Hellenised Venetian nobleman, Erotokritos represents the most manifest case of musical values being used for pro-Venetian propaganda.W późnym średniowieczu i wczesnej nowożytności Kreta była najważniejszą kolonią wenecką, umożliwiającą Republice niemal nieograniczoną kontrolę handlową i wojskową nad wschodnią częścią Morza Śródziemnego. Na podstawie źródeł archiwalnych i innych dokumentów, artykuł ten omawia rolę, jaką odgrywała muzyka jako środek kontroli społecznej i kulturowej nad rdzenną ludnością kreteńską.
Po krótkim wprowadzeniu do historii weneckiej dominacji na Krecie oraz omówieniu jej wpływu na lokalną literaturę i sztuki wizualne, autor przedstawia obecność zachodniej muzyki w związanych z Wenecją instytucjach świeckich i religijnych. Już bardzo wcześnie Republika zaczęła zatrudniać Kreteńczyków jako muzyków miejskich (głównie trębaczy i piffari). Dla mieszkańców stabilne zatrudnienie w lokalnej instytucji muzycznej stanowiło szansę na zarobek i awans społeczny; dla Wenecji było natomiast środkiem kontroli politycznej i kulturalnej. Muzyka była również ważnym elementem życia instytucji religijnych, co dokumentują źródła archiwalne. Główne kościoły i klasztory na wyspie posiadały instrumenty i śpiewaków oraz zapewniały kształcenie katolickiego kleru i muzyków.
W dalszej części artykułu omówiono rozpowszechnienie zachodnich świeckich praktyk instrumentalnych i polifonicznych w głównych miastach kreteńskich, odwołując się do przykładów ze źródeł literackich XV i XVI wieku, które poświadczają obecność utworów polifonicznych w języku greckim, takich jak madrygały i muzyka okolicznościowa. Ostatnim przykładem jest romans rycerski Erotokritos, zawierający odniesienia do zachodniej symboliki muzycznej: do mitu o Orfeuszu jako doskonałym retorze i władcy oraz do lutni reprezentującej harmonię społeczną. Erotokritos, napisany przez zhellenizowanego weneckiego szlachcica, reprezentuje najbardziej oczywisty przypadek wykorzystania elementów muzycznych do pro-weneckiej propagandy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
