Development of Teaching Materials on Microscale Experiments using Low-cost Handmade Well Plates, Part 1 — Chemical Reactions concerning Baking Soda (Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate) and Elemental Iodine —
The author has already proposed the low-cost handmade well plates that contain plastic bottle caps and white cardboard containers for microscale experiments. Using these plates, teaching materials of microscale experiments on chemical reactions concerning baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) and elemental iodine have been investigated for elemental school students. Daily necessities such as baking soda, citric acid, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), starch, and gargle liquid containing elemental iodine were used for reagents in order to secure safety during experiments. First, a teaching material on chemical reactions of baking soda and citric acid or vitamin C has been developed. Second, a teaching material on the iodine starch reaction and on the reduced reaction of elemental iodine by vitamin C has been developed. The required times for both microscale experiments were approximately five minutes, and the results for these experiments were the same as those for ordinary scale experiments. Using these new teaching materials, the author will perform practical lessons.departmental bulletin pape
George Naohara's handwritten annotations
English translations of handwritten annotations from "George Naohara photo album" (csudh_nao_0001), page 6: [Right top] I (George Naohara) and Keny Kuwahara [Kenneth Kenji Kuwahara], who had been drafted but was discharged. He was fluent in Japanese and English. Immediately after arriving at the C.C.C. Camp, an announcement of the U.S. government order was made in English. Keny kindly explained to everyone at the Camp what the announcement was in Japanese. He spoke both languages very well. Our group members included: Mr. Hashimoto [Testuo L. Hashimoto], Keny Kuwahara, Mr. Seki, Tadashi Sakaida, and Jimmy Oda. The sugar beets farm was stretching far as if it went beyond the horizon. A long ridge laid and it took us a whole day to take ___. Finally, I had to buy a pair of farm boots.
[Right bottom] In Utah, Mr. Mimura ___. When I was working in Utah, Mr. Mimura passed away. At the Utah Bukkyokai, I made a memorial address, representing friends who respected Mr. Mimura. Mr. Mimura contributed to the Japanese American community. “Become a good citizen” was his advice to me. When making a memorial address at the Buddhist temple, I stated that I would express my prayer loudly, and I continued: “Your whole sprit and soul will rerun to your home country.” The Buddhist minister listened to it at the temple and praised me about it.
[Left] My magnificent memory ____
When I was working in a hotel in Utah, I made a memorial address at a Buddhist temple. I received a praise from Hoko Terakawa, a minister of the Buddhist Church of America. It has passed decades since then. I was a barber in Los Angeles and Gardena, and am now 91 years old. But I still now remember it and won't forget it. That was when I was only about age 20.The George and Mitzi Naohara Papers consists of photo albums and scrapbooks compiled by George and Mitzi Naohara, and other documents pertaining to the Naohara and Masukawa family. Contained are photographs, correspondence, documents, and memorabilia depicting their experiences during World War II. George Nobuo Naohara is a Kibei Nisei, and his experiences include his farm labor in Idaho and Utah, incarceration in the Manzanar, Jerome, and Tule Lake camps, and the U.S. Army language school training and Korean War. He also engaged in Buddhist activities for his whole life and there are moving images depicting Gardena Buddhist Church activities after the war. Mitzi Masukawa Naohara was a preschool teacher at the Poston camp, Arizona, and also a member of a young Nisei women's club, "Sigma Debs.” Her collected materials depict her life as a teacher and social events in the Poston camp during the war
Temporal changes in the fermentation characteristics, bacterial community structure and the functionality of the predicted metagenome of a batch fermenter medium containing the upper gastrointestinal enzyme resistant fraction of white sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)
application/pdfSorghum is a potential prebiotic ascribed to the high native resistant starch (RS) content. Our previous studies on raw sorghum have revealed prominent amino acid fermentation despite the high RS content. Interestingly, autoclaved-freeze-dried sorghum fed rats exhibited beneficial microbial and biochemical profiles. Having a keen interest to reciprocally scrutinize the underlying mechanisms behind these contrasting outcomes, we used an in vitro porcine batch fermentation model. The fermentable substrates in raw and autoclaved-freeze-dried (three cycles) sorghum (AC) after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion fostered similar bacterial community structures, yet with significant differences in the characteristic amylolytic microbial taxa abundance and their temporal variation. Further, significant differences in the concentration of organic acids in raw and AC manifested the differences in the predicted abundance of the underlying pathways of carbohydrate and organic acid metabolism. Thus, this study highlights the propensity of the heat-moisture treatment of sorghum in modifying the fermentability of its RS.journal articl

Consideration on Volume Change in Diluting Binary Aqueous Solutions,Part 4-Aqueous Sodium Carbonate and Potassium Carbonate Solutions-
The author has already derived the method of estimating the volume of a diluted binary solution (VM), and applied it to various aqueous solutions. In this paper, the method is applied to sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)and portassium carbonate (K2CO3) aqueous solutions in order to examine volume changes in diluting these solutions with water at 20℃ using their density data. The concentration ranges of original Na2CO3 and K2CO3 aqueous solutions are 0-0.1500 and 0-0.5000 mass fractions of solutes respectively. The volume ratios of the original aqueous solution to the added water are 1.000mL:9.000mL, 3.000mL:7.000mL, 5.000mL:5.000mL, 7.000mL:3.000mL, and 9.000mL:1.000mL. For both solutions, as the concentrations of the original solution are increasing, the values are decreasing, and their minimums are 9.959mL for the Na2CO3 aqueous solution and 9.753mL for the K2CO3 aqueous one at the ratio 5.000mL:5.000mL. The obvious volume decreases are recognized after diluting original solutions. Using this method, the VM alues can be simply estimated without performing experiments, and therefore it is useful as teaching material for high school science.departmental bulletin pape
In shopping areas, vehicle traffic is essential because most goods are delivered by commercial vehicles. It is also important to make safe and comfortable conditions for pedestrians and maintain the follow of traffic for buses and emergency vehicles. It is difficult to apply the traditional transportation planning technique to residential areas,so a more suitable method should be developed. In this study the author conducted surveys in shopping areas and analysed the characteristics of parking and distribution of goods as well as opinions from residents and vehicle drivers. The main conclusion of this paper is as follows: 1) In shopping areas, traffic restriction for all vehicles during a specified period of a day is most effective. Both residents and drivers of commercial vehicles evaluate positively that restriction. 2) The level of restriction could be determined according to the capacity of parking space and the existence of alternative routes for through traffic. 3) A flow chart that shows the application process and guide lines for traffic restriction is presented.postprin
In Vivo Colonic Fermentation of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.): Important Correlations Observed among the Physiological Parameters of Cecum, Liver, Adipose Tissue and Fasting Serum Lipid Profile
application/pdfHigh amylose corn starch (HAS), whole grain sorghum (S-Wh), refined sorghum (S-Rf) and α-corn starch (CON) diets were fed to animals for 1 mo aiming to examine the physiological effects of resistant starch inclusion in the diet from grains. HAS exhibited significantly lower feed intake, final body weight, serum lipid profile with significantly higher cecal parameters and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents. S-Wh group exhibited significantly higher body weight, feed intake and serum lipid parameters compared to other 3 groups. Cecal fermentation was not seemed to be prominent in the CON, S-Wh and S-Rf groups with respect to lower cecal parameters and SCFA contents. The cecal microbial compositions in HAS, S-Wh and CON/S-Rf exhibited 3 distinct clusters suggesting a significant effect of the cecal microbial composition on cecal parameters, SCFA contents and physiological parameters.journal articl
