!e present study reports three experiments that examined the e"ect of retention interval and the presence of di"erential outcomes procedure (.#.) on the retrieval of information using a successive reversal discrimination paradigm with young human adults. Experiment one examined the e"ect of retention interval of ..h. In experiment two the e"ect of .#. on two phases of reversal discrimination was examined. Experiment three explored the e"ect of ..h retention interval and .#. in the spontaneous recovery of the original discrimination. Results of Experiment one showed the spontaneous reco- very of original discrimination with a ..h retention interval. Experiment two showed that .#. in phase one or two did not have e"ects on the learning reversal discrimination task. Experiment three observed an interaction of retention inter- val and .#.. !ese results suggest that the presence of the .#. generates conditioned expectancies about the stimulus reinforcer that can be a contextual-like cue that interacts with retention interval to modulate delayed retrieval of information.

Hydraulic external pre-isolator system for LIGO

No full text
The hydraulic external pre-isolator (HEPI) is the first six degrees of freedom active seismic isolation system implemented at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). Implementation was first completed at the LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) prior to LIGOʼs fifth science run7, successfully cutting down the disturbance seen by LLOʼs suspended optics in the two most prominent seismic disturbance bands, the microseism (0.1–0.3 Hz) and the anthropogenic (1–3 Hz) bands, by a factor of a few to tens. The improvement in seismic isolation contributed directly to LLOʼs much improved duty cycle of 66.7% and LIGOʼs triple coincident duty cycle of 53%. We report the design, control scheme, and isolation performance of HEPI at LLO in this paper. Aided by this success, funding for incorporating HEPI into the LIGO Hanford Observatory was approved and installation is currently underway.S Wen, R Mittleman, K Mason, J Giaime, R Abbott, J Kern, B OʼReilly, R Bork, M Hammond, C Hardham, B Lantz, W Hua, D Coyne, G Traylor, H Overmier, T Evans, J Hanson, O Spjeld, M Macinnis, K Mailand, D Ottaway, D Sellers, K Carter and P Sari

Is there evidence of learned helplessness in horses?

No full text
Learned helplessness can be defined as a psychological condition whereby individuals learn that they have no control over unpleasant or harmful conditions, that their actions are futile and that they are helpless. In a series of experiments in which dogs were exposed to inescapable shocks it was found that this lack of control subsequently interfered with the ability to learn an avoidance task. There is evidence that both neural adaptations and behavioural despair occur in response to uncontrollable aversive experiences in rodents, although this has yet to be demonstrated in other species such as horses. However, it has been suggested that certain traditional methods of horse training and some behavioral modification techniques may involve aversive conditions over which the horse has little or no control. When training and management procedures are repeatedly unpleasant for the horse and there is no clear association between behavior and outcome, this is likely to interfere with learning and performance, in addition to compromising welfare. This paper reviews published literature and anecdotal evidence to explore the possibility that the phenomenon learned helplessness occurs in the horse.<br/

A Physiological Role for Amyloid Beta Protein: Enhancement of Learning and Memory

No full text
Amyloid beta protein (A[beta]) is well recognized as having a significant role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The reason for the presence of A[beta] and its physiological role in non-disease states is not clear. In these studies, low doses of A[beta] enhanced memory retention in two memory tasks and enhanced acetylcholine production in the hippocampus _in vivo_. We then tested whether endogenous A[beta] has a role in learning and memory in young, cognitively intact mice by blocking endogenous A[beta] in healthy 2-month-old CD-1 mice. Blocking A[beta] with antibody to A[beta] or DFFVG (which blocks A[beta] binding) or decreasing A[beta] expression with an antisense directed at the A[beta] precursor APP all resulted in impaired learning in T-maze foot-shock avoidance. Finally, A[beta]1-42 facilitated induction and maintenance of long term potentiation in hippocampal slices, whereas antibodies to A[beta] inhibited hippocampal LTP. These results indicate that in normal healthy young animals the presence of A[beta] is important for learning and memory
