Adapting the European approach of Best Available Techniques: case studies from Chile and China
Best Available Techniques (BAT) are an essential element in European environmental legislation as required by the Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC 96/61 JEG). The technology transfer to industrialising countries, however, requires the adaptation of the underlying criteria, due to differences in economic, legal and technical conditions. Additionally, their prevailing technology standards and different priorities concerning the affected environmental media (air, soil, water) must also be considered. At hand of case studies for VOC emission reduction and prevention for coating applications in Chile, China and Germany, the use of a metric for country-specific determination of BAT is proposed. Linkage assignments of the porcine ATP1A2, ATP1B1 and V-ATPase (CGI-11) genes to chromosome 4
Na+, K+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.37) is a membrane-bound enzyme responsible for the ATP-dependent counter transport of sodium and potassium ions across the plasma cell membrane. The molecule is composed of two subunits: a catalytic alpha subunit and a regulatory beta subunit. A gene for subunit alpha, ATP1A2, and a gene for subunit beta, ATP1B1, have been physically assigned to porcine chromosome 4. The vacuolar H+-ATPase (ATP6; V-AT Pase; EC 3.6.1.34) is a multisubunit enzyme that translocates protons into intracellular organelles or across the plasma membrane of specialized cells against an electrochemical gradient. The gene for porcine 54- and 56-kDa V-ATPase subunit isoforms (V-ATPase or CGI-11, according to the temporary human nomenclature) was assigned to chromosome 4q1.4-q1.6. As these three genes are located on porcine chromosome 4, where QTLs for growth and carcass traits have been found, we integrated these loci into a more detailed linkage map by means of SSCP or PCR-RFLP analyses
Cloning, structural organization, and chromosomal assignment of the porcine c-fos proto-oncogene, FOS
The complete porcine c-fos proto-oncogene (FOS) with flanking regions was cloned and sequenced. FOS consists of four exons at amino acids 1-47, 48-131, 132-167, and 168-380 and includes all the typical motifs of the fos proto-oncogene. The promoter contains consensus sequences for CRE, SRE, CaRE, and the E-Box, as well as an AP-1 site. Homologies between human and swine were between 89.7% and 96.3 % in the exons. Based on somatic cell hybrid panel screening and known homologies between swine chromosome 7 and human chromosome 14, the porcine c-fos gene was assigned to chromosome 7q23. In this paper we discuss ethical challenges arising around IT supported interoperability in multi-agency emergency management and explore some methodological responses
The reference installation approach for the estimation of industrial assets at risk
When natural disasters and extreme events such as storms, floods and earthquakes occur, it is not only people, residential buildings and infrastructure that are seriously affected, but also industry. Direct losses to installations as well as indirect losses, e.g., the interruption of production, can cause severe damage to companies and the economy as a whole. For a comparative and quantitative risk assessment, and being a prerequisite for emergency planning and crisis management (e.g., planning of mitigation measures), a financial appraisal of industrial assets at risk is needed. This paper presents the reference installation approach, which is a methodology that allows a consistent and transparent assessment of individual industrial asset values. The results of this bottom-up approach can be used for a detailed spatial mapping of industrial assets taking into account the characteristics of different sectors
