The effect of fluorescent light on the cleavage of two-cell mouse embryos
CITATION: Kruger, T. F. & Stander, F. S. H. 1985. The effect of fluorescent light on the cleavage of two-cell mouse embryos. South African Medical Journal, 68:744-745.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaTwo-cell mouse embryos were subjected to fluorescent light, 2,900 lux, for 30 minutes, and the cleavage compared with that in a control group. There was no statistically significant difference in the results. In both groups 90% of two-cell embroys reached the expected level of cleavage. The possible effect of fluorescent light on the oocyte is discussed.Publisher’s versio
The effect on cleavage of two-cell mouse embryos after a delay in embryo retrieval in a human in vitro fertilization programme
CITATION: Kruger, T. F. & Stander, F. S. H. The effect on cleavage of two-cell mouse embryos after a delay in embryo retrieval in a human in vitro fertilization programme. South African Medical Journal, 68:743-744.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaTwo-cell mouse embryos are used for quality control in a human in vitro fertilization programme. A controlled experiment was designed to evaluate the effect on cleavage of two-cell mouse embryos after a delay in embryo retrieval. In the test group, two fallopian tubes were incubated in Whittingham's T6 medium for 2 1/2 hours per experiment before the embryos were removed for culture. In the control group embryos were removed from the fallopian tubes immediately after the mice were sacrificed. Five experiments were performed. Eight of 141 two-cell embryos (5,7%) reached the balstocyst stage in the test group, and in the control group 143 of 151 two-cell embryos (94,7%) reached the blastocyst stage after 72 hours. Embryos must be removed immediately after the mice are sacrificed to obtain constant results. If not, poor cleavage can lead to unnecessary confusion in the laboratory.Publisher’s versio
Images of Christ's Saving Work in Ps.-Epiphanius' Homilies
Images of Christ's Saving Work in Ps.-Epiphanius' Homilies. One cannot really speak of a systematic theology on the subject of atone-ment in the patristic writers. Frances Young once said that 'it is in fact impossible to categorize neatly the thought of the major patristic writers on the subject of atonement'. She adds that one cannot do justice to the range of motifs and images that are found in describing the saving and atoning work of Christ if we merely dismember 'systematic theologies' to illustrate common soteriological themes. One can only appreciate patristic views of atonement if one begins by recognizing the multifaceted unity of imagery that pervades the literature. This then is the goal of this article: to discuss the rich images which Ps: -Epiphanius uses to describe the atoning work of Christ
Patristiek en die studie van die Nuwe Testament
Patristics and the study of the New Testament
This article consists of two main parts. In the first part the importance of the study of Patristics is discussed. The author underscores Outler's logion that 'by itself, the New Testament is not a field of inquiry'. The heading of the second part is Instrumenta Studiorum. In this section the author gives a survey of primary and secondary works on Patristics in order to make this field more accessible to scholars
Computed tomography in psychiatric patients
ArticleThe original publication is availble at Emsley, R.A., Stander, D. , Bell, P.S.H. & Gledhill, R.F.1986. Computed tomography in psychiatric patients. SAMJ, 70:212-214, http://www.samj.org.zaIn a retrospective study of 100 consecutive adult psychiatric patients referred for computed tomography (CT) for suspected intracranial lesions, abnormalities were found in 61%. Of these, 23% had focal lesions significantly associated with alcohol abuse, previous craniocerebral trauma and focal neurological signs. Detection of focal lesions influenced patient management in over half the cases. No single factor was able to predict all patients with focal lesions and the correlation between electroencephalogram and CT results was weak. If criteria for CT in psychiatric patients are too restrictive, some cases of occult brain disease may escape detection.Publishers' versio
Density Functional Study on the Reactivity of Carbenes Toward 1,2-H Shifts
[[abstract]]The 1, 2-H shifter actions of simple carbenes (CH2Y-C-X) have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The influence of the substituent X and Y groups on the activation energy (E(subscript a)) of 1, 2-H shifits were ex am med The 'bystander' Y sub stitu ents lower E(subscript a) in the order of Me, F>C1, Br>H. Our analy sis shows that the X effect is more sig nifi cantthan the by stander Y effect. X substitutions in crease E(subscript a) of carbenes in the order of F>C1>Br>Me>H. The in flu ence of X on E(subscript a) is governed by the singlet-triplet energy separation (△E(subscript S-T)) of the carbene, i.e., E(subscript a) of a carbene is larger as its △E(subscript S-T)in creases due to an X sub stitution. The X effect was also found to be re lated to the magni hide of the exothermicity: E(subscript a) of re action is smaller when there action is more exothermic. Or I gin of the Y effect is at tribeted to the inter play between two factors late ness' of transition state on the potential energy surface, and the exothermicity of the reaction
Features of patristic exegesis exemplified by the narrative of the Tower of Babylon (Gen. 11:1–9)
n Interpretasie van die beeld van die brander in Jakobus 1:6
An interpretation of the image of the wave in James 1:6 In James 1:6 the person who doubts when he prays, is compared with a wave in the sea that is driven and blown about by the wind. It is traditionally believed that the point of the comparison is the instability of the sea waves. Thus he who doubts is like a wave which is driven hither and thither by any chance wind - like a cork floating on the wave. It is argued in this article that this interpretation does not take cognizance of the structure of the wider context. It is suggested that the point of the comparison is rather the downward movement of the wave: the crest of the high wave dives downwards and at the end the wave completely vanishes
Baptism and the interpretation of early Quistian art
The aim of this article is to stress the necessity of interpreting early Christian art in its context and with due respect to its deep structure or primary notion. It often happens that scholars base their arguments on the superficial features of a work of art, but they fail to understand the notion which these features convey. This will be illustrated by examples of baptismal scenes. It will be shown how these scenes of art are misused and misinterpreted by modem scholars because the above-mentioned principles are disregarded
