Revised guidelines for the clinical management of Lynch syndrome (HNPCC): recommendations by a group of European experts

    No full text
Lynch syndrome (LS) is characterised by the development of colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer and various other cancers, and is caused by a mutation in one of the mismatch repair genes: MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 or PMS2. In 2007, a group of European experts (the Mallorca group) published guidelines for the clinical management of LS. Since then substantial new information has become available necessitating an update of the guidelines. In 2011 and 2012 workshops were organised in Palma de Mallorca. A total of 35 specialists from 13 countries participated in the meetings. The first step was to formulate important clinical questions. Then a systematic literature search was performed using the Pubmed database and manual searches of relevant articles. During the workshops the outcome of the literature search was discussed in detail. The guidelines described in this paper may be helpful for the appropriate management of families with LS. Prospective controlled studies should be undertaken to improve further the care of these families

Without mercy: The immediate impact of group size on lynch mob atrocity

    No full text
Two independent research traditions have focused on social contributions to lynching. The sociological power threat hypothesis has argued that lynching atrocity will increase as a function of the relative number of African Americans. The psychological self-attention theory has argued that lynching atrocity will increase as a function of the relative number of mob members. Two series of analyses (one using newspaper reports and the second using photographic records) using different and nonoverlapping samples of lynching events rendered a consistent pattern of results: Lynch mob atrocity did not increase as a function of the relative numbers of African Americans in the county population but it did increase as a function of the relative numbers of mob members in the lynch mob. Discussion considers the implications of these results

Methods of increasing toughness of immiscible polymer blends, U.S. Patent 8,497,324

    No full text
An immiscible polymer blend that includes an amount of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and an amount of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA). A method for preparing an immiscible polymer blend by (a) identifying a first polymeric component and a second polymeric component as immiscible when blended; (b) combining the first polymeric component and the second polymeric component; and (c) mixing the first polymeric component and the second polymeric component to produce an immiscible polymer blend that includes structures in the blend having a maximum size of less than about 1,000 μm is also presented. An article that includes an immiscible polymer blend of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and an article formed from an immiscible polymer blend prepared by the method of the present invention are also presented

Autograph letter written by Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi to Edward Mangin. Transcription included.[no salutation] Will you my Dear Sir - to the many kindnesses you have shewn [sic] me- add that of accepting these Books? which I at first bought for myself & deformed with Notes on the Margin; afterwards however in a vain humour -- fancying you would like the Manuscript Nonsense along with the printed Text --- Collings bound them; what made half the Writing illegible to anyone who would not (as you do,) know how to read & always with partial Favour the worst hand of your ever Obliged & faithful H: L: Piozzi. I should have inserted the Verses on a Watch-Clock -- but that I think they are in Miss Emily's Scrap Book
