RRT-SMP: Socially-encoded motion primitives for sampling-based path planning
In this paper we propose a new method of encoding social norms and rules into sampling-based motion planners. Inspired from the social force model (SFM), we modify and use it as a social intention model (SIM) to reshape the motion primitives (MP) of the rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT) motion planner for the socially aware robot navigation. We also introduce a new benchmark for evaluating social planning performance, so called as the social effort index (SEI). The experimental results show that the socially-guided motion primitives-based RRT increases safe and social interactions between the robot and human agents about 50% compared to the typical RRT-embedded MP (RRT-MP) in human populated environments
Autonomic management in a distributed storage system
This thesis investigates the application of autonomic management to a distributed storage
system. Effects on performance and resource consumption were measured in experiments,
which were carried out in a local area test-bed. The experiments were conducted with
components of one specific distributed storage system, but seek to be applicable to a wide range of such systems, in particular those exposed to varying conditions.
The perceived characteristics of distributed storage systems depend on their configuration
parameters and on various dynamic conditions. For a given set of conditions, one specific configuration may be better than another with respect to measures such as resource
consumption and performance. Here, configuration parameter values were set dynamically
and the results compared with a static configuration. It was hypothesised that under non-changing conditions this would allow the system to converge on a configuration that was
more suitable than any that could be set a priori. Furthermore, the system could react to
a change in conditions by adopting a more appropriate configuration. Autonomic management was applied to the peer-to-peer (P2P) and data retrieval components of ASA, a
distributed storage system. The effects were measured experimentally for various workload and churn patterns. The management policies and mechanisms were implemented
using a generic autonomic management framework developed during this work.
The motivation for both groups of experiments was to test management policies with the objective to avoid unsatisfactory situations with respect to resource consumption and performance. Such unsatisfactory situations occur when either the P2P layer or the data retrieval mechanism is configured statically. In a statically configured P2P system two unsatisfactory situations can be identified. The first arises when the frequency with which P2P node states are verified is low and membership churn is high. The P2P node state becomes inaccurate due to a high membership churn, leading to errors during the routing process and a reduction in performance. In this situation it is desirable to increase the frequency to increase P2P state accuracy. The converse situation arises when the frequency is high and churn is low. In this situation network resources are used unnecessarily, which may also reduce performance, making it desirable to decrease the frequency.
In ASA’s data retrieval mechanism similar unsatisfactory situations can be identified with respect to the degree of concurrency (DOC). The DOC controls the eagerness with which multiple redundant replicas are retrieved. An unsatisfactory situation arises when the DOC is low and there is a large variation in the times taken to retrieve replicas. In this situation it is desirable to increase the DOC, because by retrieving more replicas in parallel a
result can be returned to the user sooner. The converse situation arises when the DOC is
high, there is little variation in retrieval time and there is a network bottleneck close to the requesting client. In this situation it is desirable to decrease the DOC, since the low variation removes any benefit in parallel retrieval, and the bottleneck means that decreasing parallelism reduces both bandwidth consumption and elapsed time for the user.
The experimental evaluations of autonomic management show promising results, and suggest several future research topics. These include optimisations of the managed mechanisms, alternative management policies, different evaluation methods, and the application of developed management mechanisms to other facets of a distributed storage system. The findings of this thesis could be exploited in building other distributed storage systems that focus on harnessing storage on user workstations, since these are particularly likely to be exposed to varying, unpredictable conditions

Deconstructing women : reclaiming their identity and culture.
In the post-colonial period, women are often said to suffer from “double-colonization”; by both the male gender and by the “previous” colonial power. Just like the colonized people, women are classified as being the “Other” or to be “lack” of [something]. In What is Woman, the author Heinamma explains how women are defined and differentiated with reference to man and not he with reference to her; she is the incidental, the inessential as opposed to the essential, thus is the “Other” while he is the “Subject” (16). A man is both the positive and the neutral, and a woman, represents only the negative. Thus, being a woman means a deviation from their male counterpart, hence implying that they are of the weaker sex.Bachelor of Art
INFRARED STUDIES OF HD AND IMPURITIES IN SOLID PARAHYDROGEN
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry and Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics., The University of ChicagoWe report measurements of infrared transitions of HD and impurities () in a parahydrogen sample of 0.7 cm long at 4.2 K. Spectra from 1800 to 8000 cm-1 recorded by a Bomem FTIR spectrometer show the double transitions between a p-H2 and an impurity molecule and also the single transitions of impurity molecules. The sharpness of the latter indicates the possibility of accurate measurement of linewidth and line position of transitions of HD and using laser spectroscopy

The paper carries out a short literature review on public sector and public marketing terms. The findings of the paper’s study shows that the Romanian public sector should give more importance to marketing activities, as 87% of the respondents sustained when asked about their necessity. Within a public institution, the marketing specialists should cooperate with research& development, sales and financial departments. The study results reaffirm the importance of the 4 P of the marketing mix when making an offer, and place them on the top positions.public marketing, knowledge, specialists, cooperation
Red Mans War: S. Alexievichs Five Prose Volumes and Russian Revolution
2015 winner of the Nobel prize in Literature, Svetlana Alexievichs cycle Voices of Utopia, which consists of five parts are a grandiose study of Soviet life. The sufferings of Homo Sovieticus who has been learning capitalism for more than 20 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union are the focus of Alexievichs attention. This article explores the traces of the Russian Revolution, figured in Alexisevichs novels of voices. Main leitmotives that penetrate Alexievichs five prose volumes are red man and wars(World War II, Soviet-Afgan War and Chernobyl war on nuclear power). Before examining red mans wars which had a profound impact on the formation of Soviet peoples mentality, we should first review the controversy among Russian literary critics from the standpoint of lack of literary value in Alexievichs novels after she received the Nobel Prize. The author persistingly recalls the voices of women and children who were forgotten in the war narrative, filled with mens voices. Through the testimony of disadvantaged group, the steady voice of the author opposing the war is conveyed. Finally, At the end of the experiment of the Communist revolution, which left only the wounds of war, we should listen to the voice of the author appealing to explore the new philosophy and new ethics necessary for the post-Soviet society, living in the Second Hand time still again

Lamin A phosphorylation/de-phosphorylation is an important process during cells division as it allows for nuclear envelope (NE) disassembly at mitotic entry and its re-assembly during mitotic exit. Several kinases have been identified as responsible for these phosphorylations, but no protein phosphatase has been implicated in their reversal. One of the mitotic phosphosites in lamin A responsible for its dynamic behaviour is serine 22 (S22) which is de-phosphorylated during mitotic exit. Recent evidence has also linked the nuclear pool of lamin A S22ph in interphase to gene expression regulation. Previous work suggested that the phosphatase responsible for lamin A S22 de-phosphorylation is chromatin bound and interacts with lamin A via SUMO-SIM motives. We have previously reported that Repo-Man/protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) is a chromatin-associated phosphatase that regulates NE reformation. Here we propose that Repo-Man/PP1 phosphatase mediates lamin A S22 de-phosphorylation. We indeed show that depletion of Repo-Man leads to NE defects, causes hyperphosphorylation of lamin A S22 that can be rescued by a wild-type but not a SUMOylation-deficient mutant. Lamin A and Repo-Man interact in vivo and in vitro, and the interaction is mediated by SUMOylation. Moreover, the localization of Repo-Man/PP1 to the chromatin is essential for lamin A S22 de-phosphorylation.Wellcome Trust Investigator award 3 210742/Z/18/Z to Paola Vagnarelli
OBSERVATION OF FINE STRUCTURE IN THE (1) TRANSITION OF ORTHOHYDROGEN IMPURITY IN SOLID PARAHYDROGEN
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry and Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, The University of ChicagoHundreds of very sharp spectral lines with typical linewidth of MHZ have been observed around the transition (at ) of impurity in a sample of solid at 4.2 K. The spectrum from 4137 to was recorded using a 115 mm long cell and a difference frequency laser spectroseter with tone-burst modulation. Transition frequencies are reproducible but the intensity changes as O-H2 concentration varies. The complexity of the spectrum may be ascribed to orientational splittings of pairs of molecules by EQQ interactions. The preliminary analysis will be discussed. W.N. Hardy and A.J. Berlinsky, Phys. The 'true use of reading' : Sarah Fielding and mid eighteenth-century literary strategies.
PhDThe aim of this thesis is to explore, by examining her life and
works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author.
The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of
writing and reading.
Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties
by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work
of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and
the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness
toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two
distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar
and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and
on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The
dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to
appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well
as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive
to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers
by inventing new forms.
The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career,
followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of
reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies
she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary
method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading
of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It
is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation
as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably
reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of
inventiveness and familiarity
