Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
The therapeutic potential of ex vivo expanded natural killer (NK) cells for immunotherapy of cancer
Cell and gene therapy of cancers has received much attention in the past decade. A number of applications of cancer treatment have been developed and used. One of the recent applications is immunotherapy of tumours with human natural killer (NK) cells. A major challenge to the successful application of this treatment has been the identification, expansion, and gene modification of appropriate effector cells. We therefore developed a novel expansion method that is simple, good manufacturing practice (GMP)-compatible, cost-effective (Paper I).For NK cell immunotherapy of patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL), efficient NK cell expansion was obtained using the same method (Paper II). However, NK cell expansion rates were lower in cultures from patients with progressive B-CLL, demonstrating the negative effect of disease progression on NK cell expansion. In the same study (Paper II), it was also demonstrated that samples obtained from the same patients at different time points had similar NK expansion capacity, indicating reproducibility and also the reability of the method. In addition, in both studies it was shown that half of the expanded T cells possess an NK-like T (NKT) phenotype (CD3+CD56+).Moreover, using retroviral vector transduction, efficient gene transfer into primary human ex vivo expanded NK cells was demonstrated. Days 5 and 6 of expansion seem to be the best days for NK cell transduction (Paper III). In addition, the safety and the in vivo anti-tumour activity of human ex vivo expanded NK cells were evaluated against human K562 cells in SCID-beige mice (Paper IV). Mice treated with expanded NK cells had significantly prolonged survival compared to the untreated group. Finally, NK and NKT cell populations that were expanded with GMP components were infused into patients with tumors. Such killer cells with or without IL-2 injections were shown to be safe and to some extent had anti-tumor activity (Paper V).In conclusion, these studies have shown that NK as well as NKT cell expansion is possible with such a simple, cost effective and easy-to-use method. We were able to expand and gene-modify with retroviral vectors NK cells directly from the peripheral blood of both healthy donors and patients with B-CLL and show that NK cells can eradicate tumour cells in vivo. This may open new possibilities for current and future cell- and gene therapy approaches.List of scientific papersI. Flat foliations of spherically symmetric geometries
We examine the solution of the constraints in spherically symmetric general relativity when spacetime has a flat spatial hypersurface. It is demonstrated explicitly that, given one hat slice, a foliation by flat slices can be consistently evolved. We show that when the sources are finite these slices do not admit singularities and we provide an explicit bound on the maximum value assumed by the extrinsic curvature. If the dominant energy condition is satisfied, the projection of the extrinsic curvature orthogonal to the radial direction possesses a definite sign. We provide both necessary and sufficient conditions for the formation of apparent horizons in this gauge which are qualitatively identical to those established earlier for extrinsic time foliations of spacetime, (J. Guven and N. O Murchadha, Phys. Rev. D 56 7658 (1997); 56, 7666 (1997)), which suggests that these conditions possess a gauge invariant validity, (S0556-2821(99)02420-0)
Radiation synthesis of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-g-tartaric acid) hydrogels and their swelling behaviors
Poly(N-Vinyl 2-pyrrolidone-g-tartaric acid), PVP-g-TA hydrogels were prepared by gamma-irradiating ternary mixture of VP/TA/Water. The influence of pH, temperature mid ionic strength of swelling media on the equilibrium swelling properties of these hydrogels was investigated. Typical pH and temperature responses mere observed by hydrogels such as high pH and low temperature swelling mid low pH and high temperature deswelling. A change in the ionic strength of the swelling solution from 0.01 to 0.2 caused a decrease in equilibrium degree of swelling hydrogels. The average molecular weight between cross-links, (M) over bar (c), mid polymer - solvent interaction parameter, chi of PVP-g-TA hydrogels were determined according to equation recently derived by Sen and Guven for the swelling behavior of charged polymeric network.
