O esporte segundo Allen Guttmann
Stimulated by some questions and uncertainties about the concepts, definitions and meanings of the sport present in the academic field, this work brings further readings and knowledge clarification about this field. We present here the beginning of a long walk on the contributions of major theorists for the Sociology of Sport. This study focuses on the work of one of the most cited authors of the sociology of sports in the Brazilian academic: Allen Guttmann. From reading and analysis of From Ritual to Record (Guttmann, 1978), we sought to identify three important aspects for the construction of the overview of this phenomenon: (1) the concept and definition of sport used by the author and, (2) the theoretical perspectives that support these concepts and (3) the meanings and functions that the sport has in modern society. Through a methodology based on Content Analysis, the process proved to be rich in detail and challenges. During analysis, sports memories of the author\u27s research surfaced, either by approximation, either by distancing the assumptions pointed out by Guttmann. It was shown, thus, a possible track to follow through on the journey mapped out; to dialogue with Guttmann‟s contributions by reflecting and interpreting the own memories of this work‟s author. Lined then readings and assumptions expensive to ethnography and anthropological research, the second chapter of this paper presents an analysis of a sporting experience of this author during his adolescence from the perspective indicated in the work From Ritual to Record. A dialogue, an award given to the theoretical rules of practice, activity performed not by the purpose of verifying the suitability of the model, either to put to test these ideas, but as a way of expressing the new sensitivity about my sport experiences conquered from reading Guttmann

Ancient Sport and Allen Guttmann
Abstract
Five of Allen Guttmann’s eleven sport history monographs examine sport in antiquity or at least touch upon the subject. They include From Ritual to Record (1978), Sports Spectators (1986), Women’s Sport (1991), The Erotic in Sports (1996), and Sports: The First Five Millennia (2004). Ancient history is a multifaceted subject with many subfields. This essay appraises Guttmann’s work on ancient sport history and concludes that it is admirable how intensively Guttmann (an American studies scholar) has written about various ancient cultures after having nearly mastered the scholarship on the subject, which is written in several different languages.</jats:p

Allen Guttmann, Cross-Disciplinary Champion of an Interdisciplinary Field
Abstract
With erudite scholarship, lively writing, and daring leaps across topics, eras, and disciplines, Allen Guttmann has earned a champion’s laurels in global sports studies. This essay is an appreciation of but one of his many accomplishments, his weaving together the multiple strands of Japanese sporting practices into a historical tapestry of indigenization and sportification. His coauthored book with Lee Thompson, Japanese Sports (2001), is an original contribution to our understanding of modern Japan and an influential argument about sports globalization.</jats:p
