    Design of wireless disaster alarm system using microwave links

    Two microwave links operating at 5GHz and 26GHz are characterized in this research to correlate the rain rate in terms of power attenuations in the links. Regression analysis is used to estimate the degradation in the received power levels in the microwave links in terms of the measured rain rates from traditional tipping buckets. The regression model is compared to the regression analysis models done in different countries. Results show that the estimation done in this research is more appropriate to be used in the Philippines compared to the existing models. This research is the basis of all the highly scalable wireless sensors systems that aim to determine the classification of tropical rains according to the received power levels in the microwave links. Finally, a knee point of -85dBm in the received signal level was observed in the 26GHz band that serves as the transition point between the safe condition yielding 0dB loss and unsafe rain conditions that increase the packet loss rates of the received signals. This knee point may serve as a trigger point for disaster alarm systems. © 2018 Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. All rights reserved

    Behavioural response analysis using vision engineering (BRAVENet)

    A new engineering methodology is proposed to improve the automation process in monitoring the water quality in a small scale aquaculture system. Behavioural Response Analysis using Vision Engineering Network or BRAVENet is proposed, as a support system to a traditional sensor-based system, to monitor critical water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen. BRAVENet is based on the reactions or behavioural responses of tiger prawns to different water conditions. The performance of both the sensor-based system and BRAVENet are analysed and discussed. It is shown that the BRAVENet can identify unsafe levels of water parameters and is a good monitoring and prediction tool for water conditions especially those instances when industry grade sensors fail or become erroneous. Promising results show that BRAVENet can be used as a support system, if not as a replacement, in continuously monitoring the status of the critical water quality parameters of aquaculture systems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Machine vision support system for monitoring water quality in a small scale tiger prawn aquaculture

    A fuzzy-based machine vision system was designed to support an industrial sensor based small scale tiger prawn aquaculture system. This system is based on the behavioral movements of tiger prawns as they are subjected to different stress levels such as unsafe values of dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity and ph. Each parameter is carefully adjusted to trigger a change in the normal behavior or movement of tiger prawns. The change in the behavior of the tiger prawn, as seen by the machine vision system, may serve as a level detection or an alarm system that will aid the sensor based system in terms of monitoring the water quality of the aquaculture environment. This machine vision system may be used to trigger the actuators needed to correct the dangerous water quality parameter back to its safe level. This research is done in real time using two basic web cameras to support industry grade sensors in maintaining the safe water quality level for this small scale habitat

    Performance analysis of music algorithm for microphone array using FPGA board

    This study presents an implementation of the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and performance analysis of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm for the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of the different sound sources. DOA offers a variety of applications in the field of signal detection, communications, navigation and speech processing. MUSIC is one of the high-resolution DOA estimation techniques and the most promising technique for actual hardware implementation. A microphone array consisting of four equally-spaced microphones (sensors) is used as a basis for this study. As for wideband application, the number of sources should be less than the number of sensors thus a maximum of three sound sources are only considered and their locations are estimated. Four DOAs are used for single source, two sets of DOA for double-source and one set for triple source. Matlab simulations and test bench results are presented showing the effectiveness of the algorithm. All simulations and tests are done using five samples only because of the large logic utilization of the codes when comes to the FPGA implementation. This study utilizes an Altera Stratix II FPGA board for the realization of the MUSIC algorithm in hardware implementation and Verilog HDL serves as the programming language. © 2020, World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering.     An analytic hierarchy process approach in the shortlisting of job candidates in recruitment

    The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is an intelligent and mathematical tool to improve the shortlisting process of organizations in recruiting skilled and competent employees. This reduces time-consuming recruiting activities by allowing it to rate, rank and shortlist candidates in a fair and objective manner especially from an applicant pool with various credentials. Job candidates are measured on the identified criteria namely; education, work experience, position level and professional qualification that are methodically weighted according to their importance. Subsequently, comparison matrixes measure the characteristics of each individual by creating a functional hierarchy and receives a final decision score. The contribution of this article was to provide a systematic and effective analysis on complex issues by specifying results by obtaining numerical decisions based on firm criteria preferences on the shortlisting process that is tunable to assist organizations to make better and proactive decisions in lesser time and cost in attracting and retaining quality employees. © 2019, World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
